My ALPFA Story

Last summer I embarked on a quest to find an accounting club to join at FIU. Naturally, in my
searching, I stumbled on ALPFA FIU as well as Beta Alpha Psi. I began looking into the two of
them, and what they had to offer. One day while sitting in class Cathy came in with other
members to give a presentation on ALPFA FIU. I was interested to find out more after the
presentation and contacted her regarding ALPFA FIU. She invited me towards the end of
summer to attend a small social ALPFA FIU was having prior to the national convention. I was
hesitant to show up, but when I arrived every member attending was open, warm, and inviting.
They all were eager to offer their stories, experiences, and answer my questions.

That day my quest ended, but the journey was just beginning. The experiences offered to me
have been invaluable in regards to professionalism, self development, and opportunity. I have
formed serious relationships with members, both students and professional. I’ve had the ability
to work with like minded and driven individuals.Yet not one of these things is unique to me
alone. These experiences, though they are mine, are echoed by other ALPFA FIU members, and
are available to anyone who seeks them.

I had recently attended a trip to DC with Deloitte and United Way for Spring Break. While I
was there I wore a few ALPFA FIU shirts to represent the organization and the school. One of
the Deloitte professionals was from the Chicago office and a member of ALPFA as well. He
asked me what school I attended and got to talking to me about ALPFA and whether I would be
attending the convention this year. He inquired to see how some of the members he met at the
previous convention were doing and asked me to let them know to follow up with him. As I said
before, you make serious--and in this case lasting--relationships with people in ALPFA.

Regards,
Carlos Garcell

Last Week in ALPFA FIU

This past week, on April 8th, 2011, ALPFA FIU hosted Stan Jansta and Ralph Carnicer during our
General Meeting. Speaking on behalf of the FICPA, Stan and Ralph spoke to members about
financial literacy and gave members great tips regarding debt and credit.

Following our General Meeting, both Finance and Accounting members attended the firm
presentation of Bank of America, the financial services company which is the largest bank
holding company in the United States, by assets, and the second largest bank by market
capitalization, presented for both our Accounting and Finance students. Led by Steven Monaco
and Heather Lasher, they gave members insight into Bank of America, which include information
regarding the seven segments that make up BAC and their sheer size. Additionally, members
were informed of potential career paths with BAC. Following the presentation members had
the opportunity to ask questions.
