computer:
• Sit about 25 inches from the screen, and position the screen so
your eye gaze is slightly downward
• Reduce screen glare by lighting the area properly. Use a
screen filter if necessary.
• Post a note on your computer that reminds you to blink
• Use the “20-20-20” rule: every 20 minutes, shift your focus
to an object at least 20 feet away, for at least 20 seconds
• Use artificial tears to refresh your eyes when they feel dry
• Take regular breaks from computer work, and try to get enough
sleep at night.
Sleep is very important to eye health, as it allows your eyes to
rest and be resupplied with nutrients. Insufficient sleep can cause
your eyes to become irritated. Ongoing irritation can lead to selling
and infection, especially if you wear contact lens.
• If you have to work at your computer for a long period of time,
take regular rest breaks to close your eyes
• Use tired or sore eyes to let you know it’s time to stop working
and get some sleep.

Mrs. McClellan, Mrs. Allen, Mrs. Rickicki, Mrs. Scott...
It is finally spring, and we are all anxious for the warmer weather and
sunshine! The first graders have sure been busy over the last several
weeks and are looking forward to our spring break and upcoming holidays!
The first graders have continued to progress in their studies. We
have been studying tricky vowel pairs in reading, as well as word endings.
Our stories and class discussions have focused on the theme “Surprising
Treasures”. We have discussed all types of treasures, from kind deeds
done to others to dinosaur bones and other things people find. Make sure
to read every day over the long spring break!
In math, we are wrapping up our unit on shapes and geometry. Try
finding examples of these shapes in your home: cone, pyramid,
rectangular prism, cube, sphere, and cylinder. The next chapter is often the
most difficult in first grade: Money and Time. PLEASE practice at home by
reviewing coin names, coin values, counting by 5s and 10s, and the hands
of a clock.

received the Francis G. and Beatrice S. Bartoo Memorial Fund, a $100,000 long way - from an upstairs room in the Colonial Library in 1975, to this
endowment fund presented by Robert Christian, executive director of beautiful old building that now houses our broad collection of Richburg-Wirt
Allegany County Area Foundation. The endowment was given by the late history, memorabilia and artifacts.... We all know that none of this would
have come to pass without the tireless efforts and financial support of
Francis and Betty Bartoo.”
During Bob Christian’s presentation of the endowment fund, he
explained that the generous donation was from the estate of Beatrice S.
Bartoo, who always felt a warm place in her heart for the town of Richburg
and the historical society. She communicated to him that the endowment
fund was to be given to the historical society for the benefit of the museum,
and to be used wherever the board of directors felt it was most needed.
Mrs. Johnston stated, “We are all so honored and excited to receive this
generous endowment fund and what a blessing to know that we have this
“safety net” to fall back on. We anticipate using this fund for building
repairs and upkeep, remodeling, speakers, publicity, or maybe a special
project will arise that will enable us to put this money to good use.”
The Bartoo’s four daughters were all in attendance. JoAnne Brickley
spoke on behalf of the Bartoo family. She told of growing up and going for
“Sunday drives” that would usually end up on some back road that had
some historical significance to either their family or the area. They traveled
to places where their ancestors grew up and heard tales about Richburg’s oil
boom, Frank Baum, etc. She related how her mom and dad’s first love
(outside of family) was preserving the memories of the Richburg-Wirt area.
They were eventually able to purchase the former Seventh Day Baptist
Church which was turned into the museum. Mrs. Brickley concluded with,
“Mom and Dad set up a fund with the Allegany County Area Foundation to
