Final Group Project

COMM 2337 Spring 2011

Creating a Media Kit

Throughout the semester we have examined basic elements of PR,

including types of PR, strategies, tactics, the importance of research
and evaluation. Taking what you have learned concerning media
channels, effective modes of communication and your recent
examination of a working press room, the assignment for your final
project will be to create a professional media kit and present it to the
class.

The class will divide into assigned groups of two or three students.
Each group will choose to create a media kit for one of the following:
• A non-profit organization
• A large corporation
• A public figure
• A local small business

Students will then work to develop fictitious information for the

organization or person to include inside of a media kit. At minimum
the kit must include:
1. Company history/Overview
2. Mission and/or vision
3. Biography (biographies)
4. Logo or important photos
5. Media contact information
6. Fast Facts or FAQ
7. List of publics (WHO are the target audiences for this
media kit? Who are the stakeholders?)
8. One Press Release or Media Alert
9. Media Kit packaging

You may also want to include extra items such as awards, recognition,
maps, video clips, audio clips, flyers, brochures, slideshows, website,
blogs, social media profiles, stickers, coupons, special invitations,
sneak peaks of sample materials, bookmarks, pins, T-shirts and other
swag or freebies.
Students will be graded on the following elements:

Media Kit (40 points)

• Physical media kit package
• Minimum of 8 components present
• Grammar
• Style
• Creativity
• Clear demonstration of PR message

Presentation (40 points)

• Physical Appearance (business casual dress or other appropriate
costume)
• Active participation of all group members
• Display (PowerPoint, poster, video, demonstration, role play or
otherwise)
• Professionalism
• Handouts
• Public speaking skills (enunciation, clarity, use of vocabulary,
confidence, voice projection, eye contact)

Peer Review (5 points)

• Objective review of group members participation and work effort

Individual Summary (15 points)

In your summary please give me a recap on this course and what

you have learned. Why did you take this course? What did you
think PR was before this class? How do you view PR now? Will
you continue to take courses in PR? What was the most
interesting part of the course? Was this course helpful in your
quest to find a career path after college?

This final project counts toward 30% of your final course grade.

Remember as part of this final project you will also present your media
kit and organization to the class. You are not limited to traditional
methods of presentation and encouraged to think outside of the box
and create original work.
Some ideas of previous projects include:
• A new novelist embarking on a book tour
• A local band launching a CD
• A new clothing line expansion
• A major announcement from a national summer camp
• A political figurehead announces they are running for office
• A non-profit hosting a fashion show for its annual fundraiser
• A food company launching a competition to name its newest
beverage
• A local library building addition

You will have 20-30 minutes to present your organization and news to
the class. During your presentation the class will take notes and peer-
review your work. (These grades will not factor in to your final grade.
Your grade will only be affected by your fellow group-members official
peer review.) Your Media Kit and Individual Summary are both due on
your assigned presentation day.
