and 90 years of Weleda medicine production

Goetheanum
…just as we have to look away from the earth towards the sun,
if we want to awaken to the source of light
common to all earthly things,
so must we turn away from the sensory world
to the spirit content,
if we want to find
that which out of the truly human
can guide the soul
to satisfying human community,
to full experience
of this community.
Rudolf Steiner (7th Letter to Members 1924)

Dear Collaborators and Friends

of the Anthroposophic Medical movement
The annual conference of the Medical Section at the Goetheanum is being held in
2011 not just with a focus on advanced specialist training and the further develop-
ment of anthroposophic medicine. It is dedicated to Rudolf Steiner. He devoted the
last five years of his life to working on the development of an “intuitive medicine”
which has its origins in “anthroposophic spiritual science” (GA 334, p. 53). Furthermore,
the whole of his life’s work – from the philosophical writings through the elaboration
of the path of inner schooling and development to the many different forms of his
anthroposophy as spiritual science – is full of indications regarding a healthy lifestyle,
overcoming a disposition to illness as well as managing individual and social crises.
As early as 1906 he presented his spiritual science as something “which proves itself in
life like a spiritual medicine” (GA 55, p. 116).
Alongside Rudolf Steiner’s 150th birthday, we also want to celebrate the 90th
anniversaries of the first medical institutions which Rudolf Steiner supported and
was actively involved with, namely Weleda and what today is the Ita Wegman Clinic.
The Association of Anthroposophic Clinics provided the suggestion for the core
theme of the morning: What social forms and inspirations are necessary today in
order to create a healing atmosphere specifically in Anthroposophic medical
institutions that are able to support the work significantly and give strength to
the staff. Michaela Glöckler was asked to speak on this subject on the basis of her
decades-long experience, followed by intensive group work and dialogue with the
conference participants.
We would like to thank the lecturers for the wealth of working groups on offer.
Within the greater framework of the conference theme they also include Rudolf
Steiner’s courses for doctors alongside the core subjects of diagnosis, therapy,
research, therapeutic community building, meditation and training in professional
ethics, as well as the question regarding our relationship today to Rudolf Steiner and
his work – including the “Michael School” of the School of Spiritual Science.

We look forward to seeing you!
