Under Siege: Your Freedom
By David Janousek
Your livelihood is under siege. Everything that you value could IN THIS ISSUE
ripped away from you after this election. This is what you currently Under Siege… 1
hold in your hands: Flexibility, Pension, Democracy, and Wages. You
have the option to keep it and share it with your new friends at United, President’s Message 2
or join them in another decade of disappointment and despair. The
Reserve 3
IAM will never let you fall into the trap of silencing your voice or
restricting your way of life. Even during the concessionary contract, “GO” Bag 3
our wages remained the same while other carriers took severe
cutbacks. The IAM has listened to you, giving you the best "Legacy “Contact…” 4
Carrier" contract to date. They have protected you from furlough,
provided OOPS protections, jetway trades and so much more. It takes
ALL of us, to secure a promising future! This is something I cannot
emphasize enough. Spread the word to our fellow brothers and sisters
and new United friends about how much you value your way of life
here at Continental. Encourage them to vote for the IAM! Flight Line

President’s Message
Dear Members,
Our group continues to deal with many obstacles that still have to be
overcome. In March alone, we continue to feel the effects of the tragic
events that sadly took place in Japan. We continue to work with the
IAM’s International Lodge, using our alliances that we have in Japan to
ensure our crew members remain safe. We will be utilizing radiation
censors for crewmembers to detect levels of radiation while in Japan and
on the plane. Please continue reporting any concerns you have with these
flights.
This merger provides opportunity for us to negotiate with the new United. The IAM will continue
listening before and after decisions are made. On April 1, 2011, the National Mediation Board issued
its ruling on the CWA/AFA filing for single carrier. The ruling was render approved. There will be a
14-day window where another union(s) could seek to gain 35% of the group to be on the ballot. We
will have more information in the coming days after this process is complete. We ask that you
continue talking about and explaining why the IAM way of life is the way to go. It is up to all of us to
be in this fight and come out strong IAM members.
ExpressJet is gearing up for its own organizing campaign in yet another fight against AFA to secure
higher wages, job security, and flexibility that the IAM CBA provides. Negotiations will continue in
Orlando, FL during the month of MAY. Your committee continues to stay focused on what matters
most to you. We also ask for your continued support through this process as we move forward.
Please make sure to utilize your communications committee and have your voice heard.
There is no better time to make sure that your address is updated with your UNION and the Company
as we move forward with these representational elections. Union meetings are the place for you to
come out and gather with fellow workers like yourself so you can better understand everything that is
happening all around you.
Best Wishes,
Joey Guider
President

As flight attendants, we travel to the far reaches of the world, living out of a suitcase or two.
Often, we are tired and jet lagged when we arrive at our layover hotel. All we want is a shower
and a bed to rest our weary bodies. Do you ever think “what would I do in an emergency?” I had
the experience of arriving in Japan just before the 9.0 earthquake and learned a valuable lesson.
Most households in Japan have a “GO” bag. The bag is
small and holds the necessary supplies to survive for a couple of
days. It is important that it is light and accessible. My
suggestion is that we carry a small foldable, empty bag. When
you arrive at your hotel, count the number of rooms from your
room to the nearest exit excluding the elevators. Once in your
room, put any medicines, ID, passport, money, a change of
underwear, cell phone, toothbrush and flashlight in the bag.
Place this bag next to the door.
If you ever needed to evacuate your hotel room in a
hurry, you will have the most important items ready to go. That
“GO” bag can save you precious time and maybe your life.

Conflicts with fellow crewmembers? Try and resolve conflicts onboard the aircraft among
yourselves. If your still not satisfied with the outcome, PLEASE call the Union Professional
Standards Committee first before going to your supervisor and involving the company. Going
through the Professional Standards Committee saves flight attendant’s jobs, salvages relationships
between coworkers and avoids disciplinary action from the company.

( CAL & UAL reserve flight attendants in class at the IAM’s Winpisinger Education Center)
(continued from page 3) This week a Reserve Summit was held at the IAM training facility to
address the concerns of reserves and to generate ideas and plan for negotiating a revised reserve
system with the new United. Our Winpisinger, Education Center in Maryland, is a campus-like
facility supported by the interest from our IAM strike fund.
Five of our Newark based, reserve flight attendants were involved in this event, which
brought together reserve flight attendants from both, Legacy Continental and Legacy United. It
was a collection of reserves throughout the combined system that come together and put in
place an action plan going forward. Nothing will ever completely dissolve reserve life, but
we intend to make it a little easier. All we ask is that you keep an open mind, and educate yourself
about the IAM and your industry-leading contract. We have the chance for a brighter future at the
new UNITED and this will be achieved with the IAM. Let us use this once in a lifetime
opportunity to build the best system in the industry. The IAM is about building a contract that
you want…for flight attendants and by flight attendants! It takes all of us to secure a promising
future! IAM UNITED.
