Task 1

Construct a circle in which two, or more, angles are constructed at the circumference,
standing on the same arc.

Action
1. Click on the tab labeled T1 in your workbook.
2. On the EDIT Menu, select PREFERENCES. Click on the UNITS tab. For Distance, select cm
for the Units and tenths for the Precision. For Angle, select degrees for the Units and
tenths for the Precision. Click OK.
3. On the TOOLBOX Palette, select CIRCLE. Click once to set a centre, and then click some
distance away to construct a large circle.
4. On the TOOLBOX Palette, select POINTER. Click the mouse on a blank part of the
worksheet. Click on the point on the circumference of the circle. On the DISPLAY Menu,
select HIDE POINT.
5. Click the mouse on a blank part of the worksheet. Click on the circumference of the circle.
On the CONSTRUCT Menu, select POINT ON CIRCLE.
6. Repeat step 5. to place another point on the circumference. Click and drag each point to
place them on the upper semicircle.
7. Click the mouse on a blank part of the worksheet. Click on the leftmost of the two points.
On the DISPLAY Menu, select LABEL POINT, and label this point A.
8. Repeat step 7. using the rightmost point and label it B.
9. Repeat steps 5. to 8. to place two points on the lower semicircle which will be labeled M
(leftmost) and N.
10. On the TOOLBOX Palette, select SEGMENT. Click on each of the following pairs of points
to connect them with straight lines : A and M, A and N, B and M, and B and N.
11. On the TOOLBOX Palette, select POINTER.
12. Click the mouse on a blank part of the worksheet. Click on the points A, M and B in that
order. On the MEASURE Menu, select ANGLE and the value of the angle will be
displayed.
13. Repeat step 12. with the points A, N and B.

a) Write down your measurements for ∠AMB and ∠ANB.
b) What do you notice about these two angles ?

Task 2
Construct a circle to investigate the relationship between the angle at the centre of a circle to
the angle at the circumference, where both angles stand on the same arc.

Action
1. Click on the tab labeled T2 in your workbook.

for the Units and tenths for the Precision. For Angle, select degrees for the Units and

14. Repeat step 13. with the points A, P and B.

Task 3
Construct and investigate the properties of an angle drawn in a semicircle.

Action
1. Click on the tab labeled T3 in your workbook.
2. On the EDIT Menu, select PREFERENCES. Click on the UNITS tab. For Distance, select cm
for the Units and tenths for the Precision. For Angle, select degrees for the Units and
tenths for the Precision. Click OK.
3. On the TOOLBOX Palette, select CIRCLE. Click once to set a centre, and then click some
distance away to construct a large circle.
4. On the TOOLBOX Palette, click and hold the SEGMENT Tool, then drag the mouse to the
rightmost of the three options displayed (LINE Tool) and release the mouse. Now click on
the centre of the circle and then click on the point on the circumference to construct a line
across the screen passing through these two points.
5. On the TOOLBOX Palette, select the POINTER. Click the mouse on a blank part of the
worksheet. Click on the circle circumference and the line crossing the circle. On the
CONSTRUCT Menu, select INTERSECTIONS.
6. Click the mouse on a blank part of the worksheet. Click the mouse on the line across the
screen. On the DISPLAY Menu, select HIDE LINE.
7. Click the mouse on a blank part of the worksheet. Click on the circle’s circumference. On
the CONSTRUCT Menu, select POINT ON CIRCLE.
On the DISPLAY Menu, select LABEL POINT, and label this new point C.
8. Click the mouse on a blank part of the worksheet. Click on the centre of the circle. On the
DISPLAY Menu, select LABEL POINT and label this point O.
9. Repeat step 8. twice to label the two other points on the circumference A and B.
10. On the TOOLBOX Palette, click and hold the LINE Tool, then drag the mouse to the
leftmost of the three options displayed (SEGMENT Tool) and release the mouse. Click on
each of the following pairs of points to connect them : A and B, A and C, and B and C.
11. On the TOOLBOX Palette, select POINTER. Click the mouse on a blank part of the
worksheet. Click on the points A, C and B in that order. On the MEASURE Menu, select
ANGLE and the value of the angle will be displayed.

c) Drag point C around the circumference.
Write down what you notice about ∠ACB.
d) Construct a right-angled triangle. Mark the midpoint of the hypotenuse,
and draw a circle, centred on this midpoint, radius equal to half the
hypotenuse. Explain what you see. Is this expected ?

Task 4
Construct a circle in which four points on the circumference are connected to form a
quadrilateral. Measure all the internal angles of the quadrilateral.

Action
1. Click on the tab labeled T4 in your workbook.
2. On the EDIT Menu, select PREFERENCES. Click on the UNITS tab. For Distance, select cm
for the Units and tenths for the Precision. For Angle, select degrees for the Units and
tenths for the Precision. Click OK.
3. Use some or all of the tools mentioned below to construct a cyclic quadrilateral. Measure
the internal angle at each vertex.

circle. Ensure that the points A, B and P can be
moved around the circumference. Measure the
angles at the three points.

Task 6
Construct two tangents to a circle from a single point.

Action
1. Click on the tab labeled T6 in your workbook.
2. Set PREFERENCES as in the previous Task, step 2..
3. On the TOOLBOX Palette, select CIRCLE. Click once to set a centre, and then click some
distance away to construct a large circle. On the TOOLBOX Palette, select POINTER. Click
the mouse on a blank part of the worksheet. Click on the centre of the circle. On the
DISPLAY Menu, select LABEL POINT, and label this point C.
4. On the TOOLBOX Palette, select SEGMENT. Click on the centre of the circle and then
click on a point which is more than two radii away. On the TOOLBOX Palette, select the
POINTER. Click the mouse on a blank part of the worksheet. Click on the outer end of the
line. On the DISPLAY Menu, select LABEL POINT, and label this point P.
5. Click the mouse on a blank part of the worksheet. Click on the line. On the CONSTRUCT
Menu, select MIDPOINT.
6. On the TOOLBOX Palette, select CIRCLE. Click on the midpoint to set a centre, and then
click on point P to construct a large circle. On the TOOLBOX Palette, select the POINTER.
Click the mouse on a blank part of the worksheet. Click on the circumference of each
circle. On the CONSTRUCT Menu, select INTERSECTIONS.
7. Click the mouse on a blank part of the worksheet. Click one intersection point. On the
DISPLAY Menu, select LABEL POINT, to label this point X.
8. Repeat step 7. to label the other intersection point Y.
9. Click the mouse on a blank part of the worksheet. Click the mouse on the large circle and
the midpoint of line CP. On the DISPLAY Menu, select HIDE OBJECTS.
10. On the TOOLBOX Palette, select SEGMENT. Click on each of these pairs of points to
connect them : P and X, P and Y, C and X, and C and Y.
11. On the TOOLBOX Palette, select POINTER. Click the mouse on a blank part of the
worksheet. Click on the points C, X and P in that order. On the MEASURE Menu, select
ANGLE to display the value of ∠CXP.
12. Repeat step 10. to measure ∠CYP, ∠CPX, ∠CPY, ∠XCP and ∠YCP.
13. Click the mouse on a blank part of the worksheet. Click on the line PX. On the MEASURE
Menu, select LENGTH.
14. Repeat step 13. to measure the length of line PY.

Useful Tools Pages

POINTER – TOOLBOX Palette


(a) Clicking and dragging a vertex or point moves the object around the screen.
(b) Clicking on a point, line segment or circle selects that object for action by a tool from one
of the menus.

SEGMENT – TOOLBOX Palette


Click and hold the mouse (a point is marked on the screen) and then drag the mouse pointer
a small distance away. Release the mouse, and a straight line will be drawn between the two
points.

CIRCLE – TOOLBOX Palette


Click and hold the mouse on the point designated as the centre and then drag the mouse to
the point designated as the radius. Release the mouse, and a circle will be drawn.

HIDE (OBJECT) – DISPLAY Menu


Click the mouse on the object(s) to be hidden. Select HIDE (OBJECT) and the selected object
will disappear.

LABEL POINT – DISPLAY Menu


Click the mouse on the point to be labelled. Select LABEL POINT. In the window which
appears, type in the required label. (This Tool can also be used to CHANGE the label of a
point.)

POINT ON (OBJECT) – CONSTRUCT Menu


Click the mouse on the object to which you want to add a point. Select POINT ON OBJECT.
The new point can be click and dragged to anywhere on the selected object.

INTERSECTION(S) – CONSTRUCT Menu


Click the mouse on the two objects that you want to mark the intersection point(s) for. Select
INTERSECTION(S), and one (or two) points will now appear at the intersection point(s) of the
objects you selected.

MIDPOINT – CONSTRUCT Menu


Click the mouse on a line segment. Select MIDPOINT, to place a point at the midpoint of the
line.

PERPENDICULAR LINE – CONSTRUCT Menu


Click the mouse on the point through which the line must pass, and then click the mouse on
the line to which the new line is to be perpendicular (90˚). Select PERPENDICULAR LINE.

PARALLEL LINE – CONSTRUCT Menu
Click the mouse on the point through which the line must pass, and then click the mouse on
the line to which the new line is to be parallel. Select PARALLEL LINE.

LENGTH – MEASURE menu


Click the mouse on the segment to be measured. Select LENGTH and the length value will
appear on the screen, together with the segment labels (for example : mAB = 4.35 cm).

ANGLE – MEASURE menu :


Click the mouse on the three points that form the angle to be measured, ensuring that the
angle vertex is the SECOND point selected. Select ANGLE and the angle value will appear on
the screen, together with the angle labels (for example : m∠ABC = 60˚).
