Preface
Engineering ethics is a study relating to moral decisions must be made by engineers in
engineering practices. As a developing country, Indonesia is still facing ethical problems in
many areas including engineering works. Engineering works generally has an impact to society
in terms of health and public safety as well as business practices, economy and politic. Ethical
problems are related to the practice of bribery, corruption, fraud in construction/manufacturing
contracts as well as a fault engineering design leads to economic loss or even fatality. By
practicing engineering ethics, Engineers are able to work under the rules and standards according
to his/her professionalism

Engineering Ethics will emphasis on the development of soft skills in various aspects, that will support
the capability of Engineering graduates in Indonesia. The aspect of leadership, nationalism, team work,
self help, character building, team work, anti-corruption attitude have a close relationship to engineering
ethics.
In reality Engineers may encounter ethical problems like :

 Bribery
 Fraud
 Environmental protection
 Fairness
 Honesty in research and testing
 Conflict of interest
By studying Engineering Ethics, students may experience :

 Sensitize you to important ethical issues before Engineers have to confront them
 Study important cases from past ethical engineering situations
 Foster moral autonomy of future engineers
 To gain experience in making the right choice in ethical decisions
 Train you to analyze complex problems and learn to resolve these problems in the most ethical
manner

This guide book will help students prepare for learning activities throughout the semester for this subject.

how Engineers must have good moral decisions in the Engineering practices.

Examples of Assigments

Assigment 1 : you are asked to find appropriate literatute related to philosophy, moral and ethics and
discuss the various definition and concept of them.

Assigment 2 : Discuss in group an important issue of ethics (for example corruption). You may start with
identify the behaviour and end up with the recommendation of solution.

Assigment 3 : Analyse the items in the code of conduct of one engineering branch (example ASME for
mech eng) and Discuss in group the important issue of ethics

Assigmnet 4 : Discuss and recommend the environment issues in a specific area of industry or setlement
