R’ Shlomo’s wanderings among
underground yeshivos throughout
Russia began in Iyar 5689/1929
when he was only twelve and a half
years old. At first he traveled with
some friends to the yeshiva in ^
Mohilev. Due to persecution they ^
had to change the location where
they learned each week. They
learned in a shul and a private home
and so on. The shiurim took place
with closed windows, and they
posted a guard to warn them of
trouble.
The conditions under which they
learned in Mohilev were very harsh.
That is why, after only a year, the
talmidim dispersed. R’ Shlomo
returned to Vitebsk, where he
learned in a yeshiva with only thirty
talmidim because of the ongoing
persecution and constant fear.
What strengthened the young
boys and kept them going was the
farbrengens. They would sit with the
mashpia or with someone from the
staff of the yeshiva and on the table
