MATH 1290: 2011: Week 7

Assignment 19: Assigned Friday, February 18, due Monday, February 28.
Place the following on Page 1, Side 1 and 2

x2 y2
1. Consider the ellipse given by the equation + = 1.
9 4
(a) Sketch the ellipse.
(b) Find the intersection in the first quadrant of the ellipse with the line y = (2/3)x. Indicate
the line and intersection point in your sketch.
(c) Consider the area bounded by the line, the ellipse, and the x-axis, in the first quadrant.
Indicate in your sketch. Find the area of this piece using integrals.
(d) Find an approximation for the centre of mass numerically, using the vertical strips
method. Make a sketch which explains this method. Take n = 12, and use Excel or
another spreadsheet.
(e) Compute the centre of mass using integrals, using the vertical strips method.
(f) Find an approximation for the centre of mass numerically, using the horizontal strips
method. Make a sketch which explains the method. Take n = 16, and use Excel or
another spreadsheet.
(g) Compute the centre of mass using integrals, using the horizontal strips method.

Place the following on Page 2, Side 1

1. Find the work W to empty an initially filled, cone-shaped drink cup using a straw of length L
that is vertically placed right to the bottom of the cone. Use the variable H ≤ L for the height
of the cone and the variable R for its maximal radius. Please label the vertical axis as h and
the horizontal axis as r. HINT: The total work must be split into two parts. (i) Find the work
to empty the drink cup using a ’straw’ of height L = H (you’ll find this work is ρπR2 H 2 /g).
(ii) Add the work required move the fluid volume as a ’particle’ over a height L − H (you’ll
find that this is ρV g(L − H) where V is the cone volume).

Place the following on Page 2, Side 2

1. Consider the problem on Side 1 again, but this time the straw is maintained at the top surface.
You should find that the work equals the weight of the fluid multiplied by the straw length L.
2. If all the parameters remain the same in these two problems on Side 1 and Side 2, then find
how much more work is required to empty the drink when the straw is held at the top of the
fluid.

Assignment 20: Assigned Monday, February 28, due Wednesday, March 2.

Place the following on Side 1

1. HORIZONTAL STRIP METHOD. (A) Consider the force on one side of a fish, submerged
at a depth D meters. Represent the side of the fish as the area bounded by the parabolae:
(i) y = ax(b − x), (a, b) > 0, and (ii) y = cx(x − b), c > 0. The water surface will be at
y = D > 0. Include a figure with your solution that clearly indicates the region of integration
and the horizontal strips required to complete the problem. YOU SHOULD ONLY FIND
THE FORCE ON THE SIDE OF THE FISH ABOVE y = 0. (B) Show that the force found
in part (A) for D large, which is true for fish in waters that are much deeper than the fish
dimensions, reduces to the intuitive result: the pressure on a point at depth D multiplied by
the area of the side of the fish above y = 0 that was considered in (A). You should find the
area of the portion of the fish above y = 0 in your solution.
Place the following on Side 2

1. (C) Use the results of (B) to approximate the force on the side of the fish below y = 0.
Now, use the results for the approximate force on the side of the fish above y = 0 and
below y = 0 to show that the total force on the side of the fish is approximately FT =
[point pressure at depth D * Area of side of fish] = [ρgD][b3 (a + c)/6]. (D) Apply your results
to the body (not fins) of a large angelfish (PTEROPHYLLUM SCALARE) that is 6in in length
while its vertical dimension (y direction) −1.5 ≤ y ≤ 2.5in). Look up the natural habitat of
this species and choose a typical depth where they might be found. You may assume that
this depth D greatly exceeds the dimension of the fish so that your approximation to the force
may be used. (E) Set up, but do NOT evaluate, the integral for the force on the side of the
fish below y = 0 using horizontal strips. (F) Set up, but do NOT evaluate, the vertical strip
approach to find the force on the side of the fish.
