1. What does GPRS means?

• The General Packet Radio Service (GPRS), is a non-voice value added services, GPRS
essentially means connectivity to Internet through Mobile Network

2. What services can be provided through GPRS

• Web Browsing,

• Internet Email,

• Chat,

• FTP (File Transfer Protocol),

• GPS (Global Positioning Service)

3. What advantages GPRS can provide users?

• Always on connection

• Mobility

• Access the information wherever you are whenever you want

4. What the disadvantages of the service?


• Limited cell capacity shared by all users

• As the number of users increase, speed will go down

• Maximum GPRS data transmission speed is 172 kbps. In reality mobile networks
are always likely to have lower data transmission speeds between 28kbps to
96kbps. In reality, the user experience will be that of a dial-up

5. GPRS connections type

Through GPRS users can connect to Internet via;

• Mobile Phone (low res. browsing)

• PDA (full internet experience limited by speed)

• Laptop (handset/card works as a modem). The Internet access can be done from a
laptop or Personal Digital Assistant (PDA) via mobile phone with Bluetooth, cable
connection or infrared
6. Is this necessary a SIM changing to use the service?
• A GPRS enabled device is the only requirement

7. Can I just upgrade my phone to access Internet?

• If your mobile is not GPRS enabled, you will have to buy a new one. If it is already GPRS
enabled, then you can use it.

8. How make the configuration over the handset?

9. How the user knows the GPRS/ Edge connection has been successful

• Nokia - the letter “G” or “E” is displayed

• Ericsson - dark-color triangle is displayed on top of the signal strength indicator

• Motorola – Three rectangles along the signal bar

• Siemens - the letters "GPRS" is displayed on top of the screen

10. How does the customer know GPRS session is active?

• Nokia - the letter "G" or “E” inside a square box displayed on the top left corner of the
screen

• Ericsson - dark-color triangle is displayed on top of the signal strength indicator

• Motorola – the center rectangle turns to a square

• Siemens - the letters "GPRS" are enclosed in brackets e.g. /GPRS/


11. What is the difference between EDGE and GPRS?

o Edge provides access to Internet anytime and anywhere, even while on the move.

o GPRS provides access to Internet anytime and anywhere

12. Is this necessary sign a contract to access GPRS services?

• Only postpaid users, because the monthly GPRS fee charges and exceeding usage will
be include in the monthly invoice.

13. Is there a minimum time to use the service?

• For Post Paid the minimum time connection is 6 months, for prepaid not defined time

14. What is the difference between a prepaid and postpaid GPRS services?

• The basic difference is the Class of Services (CoS) Postpaid customers are going to
experiment a premium or VIP type of services all the time the connection is guarantied.

15. What the difference between GPRS and a land line?

• GPRS results cheaper than connecting through land line

• GPRS requires a minimal monthly subscription fee

• To avail of this service, all user need is a GPRS enabled phone and a laptop to be ready
to log on to the World Wide Web (WWW…)

16. What's the difference between a GPRS phone and the PC?

With GPRS, most of the information on the Internet can be viewed on a mobile phone.
However, the rich graphical experience through a PC cannot be displayed on a small
handset screen. The other main difference is navigating between pages; you don't use a
mouse to point-and-click – you will have to scroll and select your options by using the up
or down keys, and 'click' by pressing the OK button on your handset.

17. What is a GPRS browser?

• Normal browser on GPRS enable phone is similar to Internet browsers such as Microsoft
Internet Explorer or Netscape Communicator. This browser displays Internet-based
information.

18. How are WAP sites different from the usual websites?

• WAP sites are focused on text rather than graphics. Basic reasons for this being:
i. The speed of the mobile network limited
ii. The screen size of the handset is small

19. How Fast Is GPRS?

Theoretically GPRS can achieve 171.2 Kbps. However, actual practice indicates rates
that vary between 20 – 25 kbps depending on network traffic.

20. IF the GPRS connection symbol is displayed why the service doesn’t works?

There could be a number of reasons including:


• Coverage, in areas where GSM coverage is poor, GPRS may have issues connecting to
the network. if you are able to make a voice call then you should be able to connect to
the GPRS network. With GPRS the resources are shared amongst all users.
• Devices are incorrectly set up. You can find each GPRS devices configuration guides on

• If the Internet site you are trying to connect to is not available or is unable to load, this
could mean that your browser or the server where the web page is hosted is down.
• The GPRS phone may need to be switched off then back on before re-attempting to
connect.
• Service is down

21. Is GPRS going to be launched in all the cities?


• Yes it is global. EDGE services in Port au Prince and GPRS in the provinces

22. Are we going to make this information public that there will be global GPRS coverage.
• Yes, our print adds will have this information

23. GPRS services will be provide for prepaid and post paid customers
• We will have GPRS for both Post and Prepaid. But in the short time the service will be
available only for postpaid users

24. In GPRS settings, how do we differentiate between the "Continuous" and "Permanent"
session types?
• It means the same.
