PC BASICS
GENERAL GUIDANCE
We live in the world of communication and are constantly bombarded by copious amounts of information and access
channels, so used to its presence that we fail to capture its real importance. Becoming familiar with new technology
and anticipating the future is not alien to our revitalising work. It aims to use it as an instrument in the improvement
of labour insertion. COMPUTING offers the possibility to access much more
information than we could ever imagine.

Today any individual or group with a simple home PC can develop

communication means in a very simple way: local newspapers, informative leaflets, letterhead. In turn, it
offers a means of development of relations with other groups: the power to move information and generate it
quickly has to be an advantage we can use. The trainer must become familiar with all of these
computing advances, offer them to the group as a resource and method: we must take advantage of the benefits they
offer. Improved quality of information given by our collective will help us improve our prestige, and more
importantly, access to other collectives.

The time of consulting guides has given way to databases available to

everyone (institutions), and it is our duty not only to know them but also to use and apply them.
The Internet phenomenon gives us an idea of the power of concentration of present-day communication, the ability
to access a document thousands of miles away in a voluntary and immediate form, to communicate and share
experiences with other groups, etc.

Perhaps it seems to be a long shot, but when the first computers were used people
thought the same, and at present any large or small group channels its information through data contained on the
hard drive of the computer. No matter how much we try to renounce new technology, we will end up creating a
functional dependence on it.

The conscious use of this lies in the useful plan and not in a plan of consumption of
technological products, as widespread as now (see the case of mobile technology, applied to the belt of the hiker). I
want to encourage the knowledge of new technology, its use, its infinite applications, and summaries it with the
following: a large number of individuals have been able to be accessed easily, relating ideas, exchanging experiences,
messages... Computing and the Internet are not only a means of storing data, but also enable that data to be
known and used.

We learn to use the means of communication on a social and cultural level, which acts
as an instrument to promote our collective work. They are motivation methods to introduce adults to the fun
use of the PC and attract attention and arouse the curiosity. To encourage the use of the PC, but in a FUN way, based
on group dynamics as games in which "everyone's a winner" on knowing the different uses of the computer, or
drafting a primer to help us familiarize ourselves with the computer terminology.
The general aim is to get adults to lose their fear of PCs and have fun.

HOW TO USE THE PERSONAL COMPUTER MURAL OF
WITTY IDEAS

PRIOR REFLECTION.
SHEET A:
In this method the trainer must encourage the individuals towards social change.
Therefore, it is necessary to offer all nature of opportunities so that the individuals and
groups may critically analyse their vital reality and are capable of becoming involved
through transformation of that reality. Encouragement that involves structural change,
without standing in the way of reflection, endeavouring to modify the structures for global
and integrated social change, with teaching of the commitment.
Decisive function of the trainer is to correct the social and cultural dysfunction and at the
same time, promote new models of personal and professional life, transformer of the
situation.
New technology enables us to decode the messages, make them more attractive and
suggest new models for social intervention. They do not involve a break away from the
previous ones, but an evolutionary process, where all the means have been rejuvenated
and updated.
The trainer must be aware that new technology is among us and we must learn to live
with it. Also, that it is manmade and we must walk hand in hand in order to provide the
solutions for problems/needs and achieve a better standard of living. New technology
must have facilitating and motivating elements and much more so when faced with the
resistance of certain groups. It is important to see the operative need of the entrance of
new technology into their lives or the future benefits for them.
The trainer must motivate individuals, make them aware, educate and train them for the
world of computers.

Information Sheet:
WHAT DOES THE INTERNET OFFER?:

❖Electronic Mail:
It is the most popular service on the net. It enables users to send and
receive information from anywhere in the world. It includes modes such as
address listing that offer the possibility to send messages to a large number
of people, or the news groups, that operate as public discussion forums
organised according to the theme.

❖World Wide Web:

The entire net is often identified as this service. Initially it was created as an
exchange system of multimedia information between computers, however,
it has demonstrated that its possibilities are enormous, as it enables users
to see, search for or publish information, converse with other users, carry
out purchases, download programmes and files, etc...
LEARNING TO USE INTERNET MAIL AND JOB WEB PAGES

❖Other services:
Internet enables users to receive or send any file type through FTP (File
Transmission Protocol), converse with a number of users via the IRC
(Internet Relay Chat) or use the traditional telephone services - including
vidéoconférences— at local call rate.

❖The future lies in :

Electronic Commerce

Long Distance Learning by Computer.
Telemedicine.
Virtual reality games.

LEARNING TO USE INTERNET MAIL AND JOB WEB PAGES

Thanks to the Domain Name System DNS, it is possible to locate an

address on the Internet in just a few seconds.
Internet addresses contain information that enables the user to find both
the server hosting the pages and the corresponding directories or sub-
directories.
The complete address of a page is called URL Unit Resource Locator.
To access an employment page it is necessary to know the entire
address that comprises:
http:///intemacional/p/d/2000221/mtemac/portada.htm

Protocol :http://
International domain name:/
directory:internacional/
sub-directories:p/d/2000221/internac/
file:portada.htm
LEARNING TO USE INTERNET MAIL AND JOB WEB PAGES

The domain may end in certain letters referring to the geographical area:
.es for Spain
.fr for France...
.com to identify companies
.net to identify organisations related to the Internet
.edu identifies educational institutions
.gov identifies governmental bodies
.mil identifies the aimed forces (military)
.org to identify organisations that cannot be classified in any other
category.

The web pages are documents written in veiy simple programming language:
HTML. They may contain text, images, animations, sound, video... Also, it is
possible to access other documents stored on very distant computers through
them.
LEARNING TO USE INTERNET MAIL AND JOB WEB PAGES

The web page has:

Text: When it appears in another colour underlined, it means that it can be

clicked on and has a link to another section of the web page or to another
web page.

 Links: They appear in the fond of text and image. They can reach other
areas of the same web page or another web page, even belonging to
different servers. They can also act to start the download of a file or the
reproduction of sound or video effects. Many web pages group the links
together into lists that fonn the so-called navigation bars, whose function is
to enable the user to easily surf all the web pages of a specific service.

 Images & Animations: The development of the compression fonnats

(enable compression or reduction) produce a growing number of images,
statistics and animation effects possible. The
images can also have links to other web pages. They are often indicated by
changing the cursor form.
LEARNING TO USE INTERNET MAIL AND JOB WEB PAGES

Frames: The web pages appear divided into three or four clearly
differentiated sections. Tins is done by using various frames.

 Sound: The number of web pages with sound is growing everyday.

Forms: They can include boxes to insert text, some with

predetermined options (days of the week, countries, sex..) and also
small boxes or circles to be filled when selecting an option.
They allow the sending of information to servers, useful for filling
printed matter, a shopping order fonn, etc.
LEARNING TO USE INTERNET MAIL AND JOB WEB PAGES

MESSAGES:

The mail service based on the web enables writing and sending electronic mail
messages from anywhere. All that is needed is a PC connected to the Internet
equipped with a navigator programme.

A free accoimt can be opened, by introducing personal data and a password, and
once created it can be used at any time and from anywhere in the world. To enter,
the user name and password will be requested and the mail programme is opened,
with the messages received visible on the
first screen and also providing an address book, files for organising the messages...
Whilst the messages are sent and received it is necessary to maintain internet
connection, which involves telephone costs.

How does email work? :

It is necessary to connect to the Internet and press the corresponding
Send/Receive button of the mail programme and the message will appear in the In
box. This can be read by double clicking it, if we want to delete it we just press the
delete or overwrite button, also they can be saved, printed or
copied with the tool corresponding to the text processing programmes.

HOW TO INTEGRATE THE PC IN MY LIFE THREE QUESTIONS

Make a blackboard or several cards, pens and sheets of paper available.

I. Preparation
In a large room, the trainer asks the participants to form groups of three.

Each small group is given out a sheet (see Sheet 1) on which they have to answer the
question: How do you feel about computers?. Each group makes a corresponding list of
their reasons and assessments.
Then the trainer asks the groups to read their lists, which will be written down on the
blackboard or on the cards as the positive and negative aspects are being highlighted.
II. Implementing- Afterwards, these groups are asked another question: What do you think of computing
"how to make..." as a world-wide source of information and communication?. Again they read their
answers, write them down on the blackboard or on the cards and highlight the positive
and negative aspects.
Finally they are asked the third and last question: How would you feel if you had a good
command of computers and used the PC adequately?. All the answers are read and
written down and positive and negative aspects are highlighted.

All groups combine their answers and make a general analysis. As a rule, answers given
to the first question will include many negative aspects, whereas in the answers to the
Ill .Presentation second and third questions, positive aspects will be more abundant.
This fact shows there is a chance to integrate the PC into the older unemployed's lives.
Throughout the analysis the positive aspects will be highlighted.
