PART A: Formatting PCs in at Workshop Opteron

Tools:

1. 4 sets of Personal Computers


2. 1 Switch 24 ports
3. 4 face plates & modular jack
4. 4 pieces of 1m UTP cable
5. 20 pieces of RJ-45

Duration: 1 week (27 April 2011- Wednesday)

Procedure:

1. Students will be divided into 4 groups. Each group will be given a set of personal
computer.
2. Each group of student need to examine the hardware and software components of the
given PC.
3. The given PC needs to be formatting and configure by using any method depending on
the type of operating system being used.

Results:

1. Each group of students needs to prepare a brief technical report on the methodology of
formatting the PC. You need to include the constraint you need to face while formatting
the PC.

1. Obtain a piece (1 m) of Category 5 or 5e cable and 4 RJ-45 connectors.


2. Use a crimping tools to attach the RJ-45 connectors to the cable. Wire the cable as a
straight-through using either the T568A or T568B standard as indicated below.
3. Use a cable tester to verify that the cable is functional.

Results:
Cable standard to be used: T568A _________ T568B __________
1. Are the correct wires in the correct position on pins 1 through 8? _________ (10 points)
2. Is the sheating inside the connector and untwisting within the specifications? _________
(10 points)
3. Does vcable test OK with cable tester? _________ (10 points)

PARTC: Workstation configuration and cabling (By Partner)

1. Cable the PCs and hub or switch to create a LAN.


2. Configure the PC IP address information in the PC settings as below:
a. Select two IP addresses from the range of host address
172.20.2.129 – 172.20.2.254
b. Default gateway: 172.20.2.129
c. Subnetmask: 255.255.255.128
3. Use ‘ipconfig’ or ‘winipcfg’ to display the IP address, subnetmask and default gateway.
4. Ping from PC1 to PC2.

Results:
1. LAN correctly cabled? _________ (8 points)
2. PC1 IP settings correct? _________ (8 points)
3. PC2 IP settings correct? _________ (8 points)
4. IP settings displayed from command prompt? _________ (8 points)

PART D: How to configure client by using Windows XP

This topic will be discussed about setup client by using operating system  Window XP.

There are 2 icons that very important to configure the client. The icons are:

 My computer  as for setting up identity of the computer and its domain


 Network connection  as for setting up client’s IP and DNS(server) address

Network connection:

To change the settings for a connection

1. Open Network Connections.


2. If there are no existing network click ‘Create a new network connection ’
3. To change the settings for, or configure, a dial-up connection, click the connection that you
want to configure, and then, under Network Tasks, click Change settings of this connection.
4. Do one or more of the following:
o To configure dialing devices that your computer uses to make a connection (a
modem, for example), phone numbers, host addresses, country or region codes, or
dialing rules, click the General tab.
o To configure dialing and redialing options, or X.25 settings, click the Options tab.
o To configure identity authentication, which is a way to help verify your computer’s
identity when making a connection, data encryption (which codes the content so
that it’s less likely to be readable by someone other than the intended recipient), or
terminal window and scripting options, click the Security tab.
o To configure the remote access server that you want to connect to and protocols
(the format that your computer uses to communicate with other computers) used
for this connection, click the Networking tab.
o To turn Internet Connection Sharing on or off or configure your computer to
establish a dial-up connection automatically, click the Advanced tab.

Notes

 To open Network Connections, click Start, click Control Panel, and then double-click
Network Connections.
 The options and tabs in the Properties dialog box can be different, depending on the
type of connection that you are working with. If you don't see a specific item, it means
that it doesn't apply to the connection that you are changing.

To make sure your network configuration well configured, double click ‘Network connection’
and the following icon will be appear:

After right click this icon and set up the IP address. To set up the IP address click Internet
Protocol (TCP/IP) and click button ‘Properties’:

Then next interface will be appear. From this interface you may set the IP address, subnet mask, default
gateway and DNS server IP address (DNS IP addressjust need to configure if you are using domain
system)

My computer:

After you have completed above steps, right click my computer and click ‘Computer Name’. From this
interface, you can set up the computer name and domain.

 Computer name  used to identify your computer on network. If you wan to change click
button ‘Change...’. If you are setting workgroup or peer-to-peer network no need to set up
domain BUT if you are setting domain or client/server network make sure all the clients
registered under the same domain (base on server used)

PART E: How to configure server by using Windows Advanced Server 2000

This topic will be discussed about setup client account by using network operating system  Window
Advanced Server 2000.

o Click icon ‘Computer and user configuration’


o Click computer to register the no of computers that you want to use in the
networking system:
o Right click new computer
o Set the computer names  computer names must be same with the computer
name set above
o Click user to register user account:
 Set the first name and the last name
 Set a username  use as the username when user want to log on
and clients computer
 Click next and set your password and the types of the password

Results:
