Section 1 - Introduction
About Personal Ancestral File Companion
Personal Ancestral File Companion is an advanced charting program for Personal
Ancestral File versions 3, 4, and 5. It prints a variety of high quality genealogy charts
and reports directly from your Personal Ancestral File data files.
§ Family Group Record - Printed version of family group view in LDS format.
§ Standard Family Group - A variable format that will print all user-defined
events.
§ Hourglass Chart - A box chart that prints both ancestors and descendants for
an individual.
§ Ancestor reports
§ Pedigree Chart - Traditional LDS pedigree chart of an individual's ancestors.
§ Bow Tie Chart - A box chart showing an individual's paternal line (ancestors)
to the left and the maternal line to the right.
§ Descendant reports
§ Descendant Chart - A box chart of an individual's descendants.

Many options are available for customizing the reports to suit your particular needs,
including colors and photos, which is now an option for several of these charts.
Another special option is "Cousin Smart", which ensures that common ancestors or
descendants for two distant cousins who marry are not repeated on the same chart
or report, thereby saving valuable space and paper.
The Companion allows you to print on any size of paper. Large charts can be
created by tiling many pages together or by printing on a large-scale plotter. These
charts and reports can be produced on printers supported by Windows, including ink
jet, laser, and even dot matrix printers.
The Register and Ahnentafel reports are automatically output to the word processor
of your choice. From there you can perform additional editing such as adding
graphics to your report before printing. Currently supported word processors include
WordPerfect, Microsoft Word, Microsoft Works, Lotus Ami Pro, and Microsoft
WordPad.
In addition, with the Companion you can preview your charts and reports before
printing, allowing you to save on printing costs. Fast "go to" and search functions are
also provided to make locating individual records easier. This is especially useful for
large files.
· Run Personal Ancestral File. Run Personal Ancestral File conveniently from
within the Companion without exiting.
· Home Base: Use this navigation center as an alternative to the menu bar and
toolbar.
· Publish to PDF. With the Companion, you can save the charts and reports you
create in PDF format, making it easy to share them with others or publish them
on a web site.
Using the Companion with your Personal Ancestral File program will make your
genealogy research more exciting and rewarding.
TIP: You can run the Companion from within Personal Ancestral File (version 4 or
PAF Companion 5.2 User Guide Copyright ã 2004 2005 Progeny Software Inc. 03-Mar-2005

higher) by clicking on Tools, PAF Companion on the Personal Ancestral File menu
bar.
The first time the Companion is opened, it will ask if you would like to search for your
PAF files. If you select yes, the program will automatically scan your computer's hard
drive(s) for all your PAF files, versions 3.0 and higher. These files are then displayed
with their associated path (disk drive and folder location) in the Open dialog. You
must select a file before you can view the records or print reports. The Companion
will remember the last file you worked on, and all future sessions will start with that
file open.
Tip: If you choose not to scan when first opening the program, you can always do so
later by selecting File, Scan disk for files on the menu, or by clicking the Scan Disk
button in the Open dialog. You can also re-scan by following the same steps.
Note: When you first open the program, Companion will automatically put the
files you opened most recently in your PAF 4 or 5 program in your Recently
Used File List, located under File in the menu bar. If you use PAF 3 and would
prefer not to browse for your files you should choose the automatic scan for files
option.
The Companion also allows you to assign more meaningful names to your files
and rename them later if you wish. See Section 2, Getting Started, Assigning
Names to Your Files for more information.
Þ Naming your files for the first time and renaming them later are both
accomplished in the same way. These functions can be performed either from the
menu bar or Home Base.

Open a File
The first time the Companion is opened, it will ask if you would like to search for your
PAF files. If you select yes, the program will automatically scan your computer's
hard drive(s) for all Personal Ancestral File (*.paf) files, versions 3.0 and higher. The
files are then displayed in the Open dialog list box.
If you use PAF 3 and would
prefer not to browse for your files you should choose the automatic scan for files
option.
When you start the Companion you must select a file before you can find an
individual, view your records or print reports.

12
Important: A list of your files will only appear in the Open dialog if you have
performed a hard drive scan. If you do not wish to scan, you will need to
manually find the file you would like to open by clicking the Browse button.
Tip: Once you've opened a file, it will appear in the Recently Used File List,
located under File in the menu. To open it again, just click on it in the list.
Companion will store up to six files in this list.
Þ The newly assigned name now appears in the list of files. Note that this
operation does not select the newly named file.
Important: A list of your files will only appear in the dialog if you have performed a
hard drive scan. If you have not performed a scan, or would like to re-scan, you can
do so by selecting File, Scan disk for files on the menu, or by clicking the Scan
Disk button in the Open dialog.

are:
§ Microsoft Word
§ WordPerfect (DOS and Windows)
§ Microsoft WordPad
§ Microsoft Works
§ Lotus Ami Pro
The default is Microsoft WordPad, that comes free with Windows. If you have no
other word processing program, there is no need to change this setting.
If your word processing program is not listed here and you know that it can use rich
text format (RTF), choose Microsoft Word and specify the program name and
directory path.
Note 1: Microsoft Works and Lotus Ami Pro will not accept photos for the
Ahnentafel and Register reports.

14
Note 2: There are some known problems with WordPerfect version 9.0 which
may cause the following to occur:
1. Poor image quality when viewing on screen i.e. red dots on photos. This does
not occur in the printed report.
2. Image placement can be inconsistent i.e. photo is placed over text. You may
be able to manually move the photo by clicking and dragging the image when
viewing in Word Perfect.
Treatment of Notes
The Companion allows you to determine how to print your notes. This affects only
the presentation of your notes in reports and does not change the files in any way.
Word Wrap
If you enable word wrap, the Companion will print your notes in one continuous line,
skipping to a new line only when the end of a line is reached or a new paragraph is
started. Otherwise, the Companion will print your notes line for line exactly as you
have entered them.
TIP: To print your notes exactly as entered in PAF, do not enable word wrap and
choose a True Type fixed pitch font, such as Courier New.

the files in any way.
Þ To disable substitution:
1 From the menu bar, select File, then Preferences, and click on Options.
2 Deselect Substitute Chr. and Burial.
3 Click OK.
Surnames
There are two alternatives for printing and displaying surnames. You can choose:

select a similar TrueType version.
Status Bar
The status bar can be turned off so that more of the screen is available for viewing
information.
§ From the menu bar, select File, then Preferences, and click on Status Bar.
A check mark next to Status Bar indicates this option is on.
Home Base
Home Base is an alternative navigation center for the Companion. By default, all
program activity centers around the Family Group View where you access program
functions from the toolbar and the menu bar. However, you can change this default
setting so that Companion will always start with the Home Base.
§ From the menu bar, select File, Preferences and click on Home Base ( Ö = on).
OR
§ From Home Base select Preferences, then Options, and double-click on Turn
Home Base On (or Off).
If you turn off the Home Base option, Home Base will still be available from the tool
bar, and you can change your preference at any time.
§ If the Show LDS Events box is selected, you will be able to include LDS Events
in all reports and charts.
§ If the Show LDS Events box is NOT selected, LDS events will not appear in any
views or reports. Also, the LDS Event option will be grayed out in all Options
dialog boxes.

Ibid
Companion lets you to choose to use Ibid. for repeating sources in your LDS-style
and Standard Family Group Records, as well as in your Ahnentafel and Register
reports. When this option is activated, repeating sources that follow directly beneath
each other will have the word "Ibid." appear in place of source title, author, repository
and so on, with citation (detail) text and comments following after. This allows you to
save valuable space and paper in your reports.
Tip: Due to the design of the report layout, Ibid is reset for each person in the LDS-
style and Standard Family Group Records.
Restoring Defaults
You can set your own options for the views, reports, and user preferences. At any
time, you can restore these options to their original default values.
The exceptions are the following preferences which are always initialized to the
same values you set in your Personal Ancestral File program. This occurs each time
you run the Companion or press the Restore button:

Name List. Use this option to browse all names in the file or go to a
specific individual.
You can also go to an individual you have already visited by selecting them from the
History List.
Name List
The Name List presents the entire list of individuals contained in the .paf file.
From the Name List you can search for specific individuals by surname and
given name (optional) or by RIN. The search function is recommended if you
want to search using criteria other than name.
TIP: If you enter a given name with no surname, the first person with that given
name and no surname will be displayed. Use the search function if you want to find
all the people with a specific given name.
For ease of browsing, the names are always displayed in alphabetical order
beginning with the "Home person" specified in your Personal Ancestral File program.
You can choose to show individuals (that is, names) with RIN, birth and death dates,
1
RIN (Record Identification Number). Personal Ancestral File assigns each individual record a record
identification number. This number is used to distinguish that individual from all others in the .paf file. Since
many people in the file may have the same name, this number helps you quickly find a specific individual.
2
ID number. This number is assigned by the original author or compiler(s) of this record. This number may not
be unique and can contain alpha characters or, as in many cases, nothing at all. It is another way individuals or
groups may be identified and found in the file.

22
spouse, or parents. Place-names, where available, will also be displayed with birth
and death dates. The dates, spouses, and parents will be displayed only if the
information is recorded in the file for the individual.
Þ Go To Name:
1 Enter the surname in the first box and the given name(s) or initials in the second
box, or
type the surname and the first letter of the individual's first name, or

23
TIP 1: Entering a single letter in the surname box will take you to the first surname
that begins with that letter. For example, enter T to jump to the surnames that begin
with T.
TIP 2: Enter nothing in the boxes to take you to the very top of the Name List.
Þ Go to RIN:
1 In the first box, enter the individual's RIN.
Remember, you can always go back to an individual you have already examined in
the Family Group View by selecting them from the History List.
Go To
Similar to the "go to" in the Name List, you can use this function to find an
individual using his or her full name, first initial and surname, or simply a
surname. You can also find someone with a RIN or ID number.
TIP: Use the Search feature to find all the people with the same given name.

24
§ From the toolbar, click on the Go To button (only available when viewing the
Name List).
Þ Go to Name:
1 In the top box, enter the full name (this must be spelled exactly as it appears in
the .paf file)
or
type the individual's first initial and surname (for example, D Vernest)
or
type only a surname.
2 Click OK.
The Name List will display with the person you are seeking highlighted in blue. If the
name is not found, the next closest person (in alphabetical order) will be displayed. If
you entered only a surname, the first person with that surname will be highlighted.
TIP 1: Entering a single letter in the name box will take you to the first surname that
begins with that letter. For example, enter T to jump to the surnames that begin with
T in the Name List.
TIP 2: Enter nothing in the Go To dialog box to take you to the top (beginning) of the
Name List.
Þ Go to RIN:
1 In the top box, enter the individual's RIN.
2 Click OK.
If you are in the Name List, the person you are seeking will be highlighted in blue. In
any other view, you will be brought directly to the individual's Family Group View. A
message saying "Not found" will be displayed if there is no one in the database with
that RIN.
Þ Go to ID number:
1 In the bottom box, enter the individual's ID number.
2 Click OK.
The Family Group View will display for the first person in the database with that ID
number. A message saying "Not found" will be displayed if no one in the database
has that number.

Search
The Companion offers a powerful search capability to help you find
people in your .paf file. You can search using as little or as much as
you know about an individual in any of seven categories.
For example, if you know that the individual's last name is Pothier, you can search
for Surname = Pothier. This search will find all individuals in the file with the surname
Pothier (potentially a long list).
You can search using multiple criteria. For example, if you add Person = Male, only
males with the surname Pothier will be listed. If you further specify Event = Birth and
Date after 1860, only male Pothiers born after 1860 will be listed.
You can also include a keyword search for one or more words in a name, title, place,
or note. The more information you specify, the shorter the match list will be and the
easier it will be to find the person you are seeking.
Tip: The information you enter in the search screen is not case sensitive. This
means there is no difference between uppercase (A) and lowercase (a)
characters or any combination of upper- and lowercase. For example, POTHIER
is the same as Pothier.
· Title. Search for the person's title (the default is Any title).
Contains. Enter one or more keywords that appear anywhere in the title, for
example, Capt.
PAF Companion 5.2 User Guide Copyright ã 2004 2005 Progeny Software Inc. 03-Mar-2005
26
· Event. Search for an event type by selecting from the list of available event types
(the default is Any event).
· Place. Search for a place-name where the event occurred (the default is Any
place).
Contains. Enter one or more keywords that appear anywhere in the place-name.
Sounds Like. Enter any character string that resembles the place-name in sound.
· Date. Search for the date an event occurred (the default is Any date).
On. Enter the exact date the event happened.
Before. Enter a date after the event happened.
On or Before. Enter a date on or after the event happened.
After. Enter a date before the event happened.
On or After. Enter a date on or before the event happened.
Range. Enter a date range during which the event happened.
Important: Any common date format with a four-digit year will be accepted.
The program converts the date you enter to the format dd_mmm_yyyy. For
example, the following date formats would all be interpreted as 23 Mar 1956:
Mar 23 1956, 23/3/1956, 3/23/1956, 1956/3/23. 4/5/1953 would convert to
April 5, 1953, not May 4. B.C. dates must have a four-digit year plus a BC
suffix, for example 2046 BC.
· Notes. Search for keywords in the biographical notes for an individual (the default
is Any word).
Contains. Enter one or more keywords that may appear anywhere in the notes,
for example, probate.
The program will now search for all records that match your search criteria, stopping
when the entire file has been examined or when 32,000 matches have been found,
whichever comes first.
TIP 1: You can cancel a long search at any time and review the results (partial
match list) by clicking on View and then Matches on the menu bar.
TIP 2: Click the Reset button to reset your search criteria to the default settings.
Search Example 1
Suppose you want to find all men with the surname Pothier.

27
The program will now search the file for all individuals that match the criteria you
have supplied and will show you a list of matches.

The Family Group View for the selected individual will be displayed.
See Section 7, Using the Match List, for more information about displaying,
browsing, saving, and printing this list.
Þ Keyword Search for Name Contains, Title Contains, Place Contains, Notes

You can perform even more powerful searches by looking for multiple keywords
contained within a name, title, place, or note.
These keywords can contain alphabetical or numeric characters only. Keywords that
are all numeric will be ignored.

Kin Search
Kin Search is a powerful feature of the Companion that allows you to find all relatives
(kinship) of an individual and browse through this list, selecting only those you are
interested in. You can also print reports for individual relatives and their relationship
with the subject. The alternative is to print an entire kinship report, that can be very
long for some files and completely impractical if you are interested only in the
relationship between two specific individuals.
Note: The Kin Search, like the kinship report, may take a long time to produce,
depending on the size of the file and the number of relatives for the selected subject.
To keep search time to a minimum, Kin Search stops at the first relationship it
encounters between the chosen individual and another individual in the file. This may
or may not be the closest relationship between the two individuals.
PAF Companion 5.2 User Guide Copyright ã 2004 2005 Progeny Software Inc. 03-Mar-2005
30
The Companion will now search for all relatives of the selected individual and display
a list of relatives.
When you select a name in the left box, the relationship and common ancestor
appear in the right box. You can move your selection up and down the list using the
arrow keys. You can also use the scrollbar to view the list.
You can select a new individual from this list or print a short kinship report showing
only the highlighted individual and his or her relationship with another individual.
PAF Companion 5.2 User Guide Copyright ã 2004 2005 Progeny Software Inc. 03-Mar-2005
31
The family group view for the selected individual will be displayed behind the list.
The default PDF viewer will open, displaying a short report showing only the
selected relative, his or her relationship with the subject and their common
ancestor.
When the PDF viewer is closed, the Relatives dialog will still be active for further
browsing.
The results of your Kin Search will be maintained in this list of relatives until you

course, we still offer our traditional black & white (no color) option as well. As an
added bonus, a gradient option can be applied to any color chart. Colors can
also be applied to chart views.

Fan Chart
The Fan Chart is a fan-style representation of the current individual and his
or her ancestors. This chart prints the individual's name, birth year, and
death year. The program will print the christening year if the birth year is not
known, and the burial year if the death year is not known.
You can choose a traditional semicircle Fan Chart, a quarter circle, or a full circle.
The Fan Chart will print on ink jet and laser printers but is not guaranteed to print on
dot matrix printers.
One unique feature of the Fan Chart is that it will automatically scale to fit on one
sheet of paper according to the paper size you have selected. For more information
about printing a Fan Chart, refer to Fan Chart Options.
Please note: The maximum number of generations you can print is 16. The program
will alert you if you try to print more generations than can fit on the paper size you
have chosen. If this occurs, choose fewer generations per page.

The Descendant Chart is a box chart that prints an individual and his or her
descendants from left to right across the page. Photos can be included in
this chart.
Although the default options will satisfy most users, the options screen allows you to

Print Preview
All charts and reports, with the exception of the Ahnentafel and Register reports,
can be previewed in PDF format. This allows you to evaluate the presentation of
the chart before printing.
Re-size
The Re-size feature is available for Ancestor, Descendant, Hourglass and Bow
Tie charts. With Re-size you can determine the chart size, number of pages,
number of people, and number of generations the will go to the printer. You can
change the chart options, number of generations, and scaling until you get the
results you want. The preview option is available here as well, allowing you to
view the effects of your changes on the overall appearance of your chart.
Once you are satisfied with the results, you can print or publish directly from the
Re-size screen by clicking the corresponding button.
Note: Re-size is not required for the Fan chart because it has a fixed format and
automatically scales to fit on a single sheet of paper.
TIP: Re-size is useful for sizing both tiled and single page charts.
Þ To access Re-size
§ Click on the Re-size button in the lower right corner of the Ancestor,
Descendant Hourglass or Bow Tie Chart options screen, and the following
dialog will appear:

box, you must always press the Calculate button.

Publishing Reports
The Publish feature in Companion makes it easier than ever before to share your
charts with others by allowing you to save them in PDF format. This option is
available for all charts and reports, with the exception of the Ahnentafel and Register
reports.
What is PDF?
PDF, or Portable Document File, is a compact, universal file format that preserves
document formatting, such as font, color, graphics, and layout, regardless of what
type of software or operating system the document was originally created in.
§ Easily share documents electronically. Because PDF files are compact, they
can be sent through e-mail or saved to diskette.
§ Create files that can be viewed by anyone with PDF viewing software, which,
in many cases, can be obtained for free. This means others can see your
document without having to buy any special programs and without incurring
any costs to themselves.
§ View documents on almost any operating system, with no conversion hassles
or system compatibility worries. PDF files can be viewed in Windows,
Macintosh, Linux, Unix and even Palm OS.
§ Include your document in a web page.
PAF Companion 5.2 User Guide Copyright ã 2004 2005 Progeny Software Inc. 03-Mar-2005
116
Note: The Fan Chart has special requirements that are available only on laser
and ink jet printers. For more information, see Supported Printers.
The Register and Ahnentafel Reports are automatically output to the word processor
of your choice. From there you can perform additional editing before printing, such as
adding photographs to your report. Supported word processors include WordPerfect,
Microsoft Word, Microsoft Works, Lotus Ami Pro and Microsoft WordPad. WordPad
is included free in your Windows accessories group.
For many charts and reports, you can select the font. Font selection is a global
option and must be selected before you choose a report to print. The exceptions are
the Register and Ahnentafel Reports, where you must change the font within your
word processor.
Selecting any of the twelve reports will present an options screen followed by a
print dialog screen. This is a standard Windows print dialog. For help setting up
your printer in Windows, you should consult your Windows user guide.
TIP: For dot matrix printers using continuous fan-fold paper, you can create a
continuous vertical chart with no gaps by specifying zero (0") for the top and bottom
margin in the Report Options.
One of the program's more powerful features is the ability to present a chart on as
few pages as possible. Often you can print your chart on even fewer pages by trying
one or more of these suggestions:
PAF Companion 5.2 User Guide Copyright ã 2004 2005 Progeny Software Inc. 03-Mar-2005
117
Some of these tips may also apply to other reports, including the Outline Descendant
and Kinship.
Wall Charts
A wall chart is any large-scale genealogy chart that exceeds the paper size capacity
of a typical dot matrix, ink jet, or laser printer. For more information on printing wall
charts, please visit:
http://www.progenysoftware.com/PAF-Companion-wallcharts.html
Conventional Method
The Companion allows you to print ancestor and descendant charts of any size. If
your chart exceeds the size of the paper, it will print on multiple pages. This is called
tiling. With the aid of printed alignment marks and crop marks, you simply cut and
paste the individual pages to create the large (tiled) chart.
The Companion provides two additional options for printing wall charts on a
single large sheet of paper:
81
Cousin Smart. This option ensures that common ancestors or descendants for two distant cousins who marry
are not repeated on the same chart, resulting in a smaller chart on less paper.
82
Units of Measure. The Companion will automatically adjust to U.S. (inches) or metric (centimeters) units of
measure depending on the regional settings in your Windows operating system. This applies to chart and box
sizes, as well as margins and indent options for your charts and reports.

Note: You must have the appropriate Windows printer driver for the make and
model of your plotter.
§ Ensure that your plotter is selected in the printer setup, and click OK from the
chart options screen, or
Click on Print in the Re-size screen.
Important: This disk file can only be used for printing the chart to a printer. It
cannot be used by a graphics or HTML viewer.
Note: You must have the appropriate Windows printer driver installed on your
system for the make and model of the plotter used by the print shop.
1. Print the chart as you normally would, except when the print dialog screen is
displayed, check the Print to File option.
2. You will be asked to supply the disk drive and file name to save your chart file
to a disk.
3. Take the disk to the print shop for printing.
The Re-size option makes it easy for you to define the content and size of your
wall chart before you print it. This way you know how it will print because you
designed it!
Supported Printers
Reports will print on any printer that is compatible with Windows. This applies to
most laser and ink jet printers. The exception is the Fan Chart, that prints on laser
and ink jet printers but is not guaranteed to print on dot matrix printers.
The number of generations you can print on a Fan Chart depends on how much
memory (RAM) your printer has (not to be confused with your computer s memory). If
you prefer to use the HP-GL option, which is a vector code (all laser and ink jet
printers are raster devices), the HP-GL must be translated to raster in the printer s
memory. The more generations you print per chart, the more memory required. For
example, a five-generation Fan Chart can be printed on an HP LaserJet III with 1 MB
of memory.
If you are attempting to print too many generations, the HP printers display error
code 20 (memory overflow) or 21 (print overrun). To overcome this problem, activate
the page protection feature on your printer. Page protection forces the printer to
rasterize the whole image in memory before the page starts traveling through the
print engine. Page protect requires memory above the minimum configuration and

Refer to your printer s instruction manual to activate the page protection feature.
Printer Drivers
Using HP-GL to print the Fan Chart
Even if your printer or plotter is physically capable of understanding and printing HP-
GL, this compatibility may not be built into the printer driver. In this case the HP-GL
codes will not be passed to the printer, and the Fan Chart will not print. There is a
simple solution to this problem: When generating the Fan Chart, choose the Print to
File button on the Fan Chart options screen (this is different from "print to file" on the
printer setup dialog). Once you have provided a file name, click OK to write the Fan
Chart to a disk file instead of going directly to the printer. Then print the file from the
DOS prompt using the Copy command. Your printer should now print the Fan Chart.
Contact your printer supplier for the latest drivers. If you have a full Internet
connection, Hewlett Packard drivers can be downloaded from HP s site at:
www.hp.com
Other vendors also make drivers available from their web sites.

This automated feature of the Companion finds individuals in the Pedigree Resource
File (PRF) who may match those in your .paf file. The Companion does this by
comparing one or more individuals in your file to all individuals on a PRF Master
Index CD-ROM (note: the Master Index must be for Discs 1-50 or newer). The
results are presented in a WordPad document that you can print or save for later
use.
Pedigree Resource File CDs and the latest Master Index CD can be ordered directly
from the Salt Lake Distribution Center.
Phone numbers:
You can also order online at www.familysearch.org, and click on Order Family
History Resources.
Although this automated comparison may take some time if you select the all
persons in file option, this is still much faster than manually performing Master
Index searches for each person in your .paf file.
Basic matches are done on surname and given names for the current subject only,
end-of-line individuals, or all persons. For an advanced comparison, you can also
PAF Companion 5.2 User Guide Copyright ã 2004 2005 Progeny Software Inc. 03-Mar-2005
121
match on dates and place-names. In many cases this will significantly reduce the list
of matches to a manageable size.
Note: If you choose to match on dates and place-names, an event must match both
the date and the place-name in order for an individual to be considered a match. It is
not a match if the date matches one event and the place-name matches another
event.
TIP: Select the date and place-names options to reduce the list of potential matches
to a manageable size.
Þ Name match
The Companion will match surname and given names for:
§ Current subject only. Perform a comparison for only one individual in your
.paf file. Note: The selected individual must have a surname.
§ End-of-line individuals. Perform a comparison for all individuals in your .paf
file who have no parents.
§ All persons in file. Perform a comparison for every individual in your .paf file.
For this option, it is recommended that you include dates and place-names to
significantly reduce the list of matches to a manageable size.
Caution: The All persons in file option may take an hour or more, depending on
the size or your .paf file and the speed of your CD-ROM drive. You may want to
schedule this when you do not intend to use your computer for an extended
period of time.
Match rules: Only individuals with an identical surname and one or more identical
given name(s) will be considered a match. For example, Mary Ellen Brown will match
with Mary Brown, Sarah Mary Brown, Ellen Brown, and Sarah Ellen Brown. Initials
are ignored in the name match. Individuals with no surname will be excluded from
the matching process.
Þ Date match
Select this option to match individuals with events that occurred the same year.
Match rules: Only the four-digit year is used for matching, not the month or the day.
Individuals with an event that occurred in the same year or within a specified range
of years will be considered a match.
This option will help reduce the number of potential matches, narrowing the results to
those individuals who have a greater probability of being the same person.
Otherwise, without matching on dates, Mary Chalmers born in 1790 would be a
match for Mary Chalmers born in 1860.
Þ Place-Names match
Select this option to match individuals with events that have the same place-name.
PAF Companion 5.2 User Guide Copyright ã 2004 2005 Progeny Software Inc. 03-Mar-2005
122
Match rules: This is an identical, full- word match. Only place-names with the exact
same sequence of characters, including spaces will be considered a match. For
example, Orange County Florida does not match Orange Co. Florida.
Þ To perform a compare:
1 Make sure the subject individual is displayed in the Family Group View.
2 Load an installed PRF Master Index CD in your CD-ROM drive.
3 From the toolbar, click the Compare button.
OR
From the menu bar, select Find and click on Compare to Pedigree Resource
File.
4 Select one or more match options.
5 Click the Start button.
Note: The menu bar option will not be available (grayed out) until you install a PRF
Master Index CD-ROM on your computer.
Important: If you have more than one Master Index CD you must repeat the
compare function for each CD in the set.
Once the compare is finished, the results will be displayed in a WordPad window
showing the person identification number (PIN) and PRF CD number for each
possible match. You then have the choice of printing or saving this reconciliation
report to a disk file.
TIP: Always print the reconciliation report unless it is very long, in which case you
could save it to a disk file for browsing later. You will need this information to find
these individuals (by PIN) on their respective PRF CD.
To suspend:
To resume:
1 Make sure the same PRF Master Index CD is loaded in your CD-ROM drive.
2 From the toolbar, click the Compare button.

OR
From the menu bar, select Find and click on Compare to Pedigree Resource
File.
3 Click the Resume button.
Important: The reconciliation report will be lost if you close the WordPad window
without printing or saving to a disk file. If you save the report, remember to give it
a different file name because the default file name assigned by the Companion
will be reused when you perform another compare.

Photos
Several reports and charts allow you to print a photo for each individual in the chart.
Companion uses the same default photo you have specified in your Personal
Ancestral File program (must be PAF 4.0 or higher). Companion does not allow you
to change or edit the photo, you must do this through Personal Ancestral File.
For convenience, the default photo is always displayed in the Family Group view. In
addition, photos can be displayed in the Ancestor, Descendant, Hourglass, and Bow
Tie views.
Note: PhotoShop PSD (*.psd) images will not display in the Family Group View.
However, they will print in charts and reports.

The photo is always proportionately sized to fit within the 1.5 inch square box
available. This means that the photo will always retain its original aspect ratio. The
photo will always print in the same section as the individual's events, and will be
present only for report subjects and their children, not for parents of the subjects or
spouses of children.
The photo width83 is automatically sized (smaller or larger) to the width of the printed
box. The length will vary proportionately so the photo will always retain its original
aspect ratio (width to length). You can change the size of the photo by adjusting the
box width. This option is under the Box tab of the options dialog for each chart. The
photo is always printed beneath the name and event information for the individual.
You cannot change the position of the photo.
The photo is always sized to be one inch (2.54 cm) high. The width will vary
proportionately so the photo will always retain its original aspect ratio (width to
length). The photo will always print on the same line immediately following the
individual's name. You can change the size and position of the photo through your
word processing program after the report has been created.
Note: Microsoft Works and Lotus Ami Pro will not accept photos for the Ahnentafel
and Register reports.
83
Units of Measure. The Companion will automatically adjust to U.S. (inches) or metric (centimeters) units of
measure depending on the regional settings in your Windows operating system. This applies to chart and box
sizes, as well as margins and indent options for your charts and reports.

History List
The History List records the name and RIN84 of the most recent individuals you have
viewed. The maximum number of names contained in the History List is 80. This
provides a convenient way for you to return to previously viewed individuals rather
than doing another Go To or Search.
Note: The history list is saved for each .paf file and restored the next time you run the
Companion.
The Family Group View for the selected individual will be displayed.
84
RIN (Record Identification Number). Personal Ancestral File assigns each individual record a record
identification number. This number is used to distinguish that individual from all others in the .paf file. Since
many people in the file may have the same name, this number helps you quickly find a specific individual.

Changing your Personal Ancestral File program: If you have more than one
Personal Ancestral File version installed on your computer, the Companion will ask
you to select the version to use as a default. If you later wish to change your default,
then select File, Open, and click the Scan Disk button. Companion will then find and
display all versions of Personal Ancestral File on your system. Choose the version
you wish to run from within Companion.
OR
Personal Ancestral File will start with the selected (or current) file open for use.
TIP: You can also run the Companion from Personal Ancestral File (version 4 or
higher), by clicking Tools, PAF Companion, on the Personal Ancestral File menu
bar.
Important: You must exit Personal Ancestral File. Do NOT use the Windows "switch
tasks" feature or <ALT>< TAB> to return to the Companion. This may cause a
program error since the Companion cannot work with a file that is also opened by
another program.

Home Base
Home Base is an alternative navigation center for the Companion. By default, all
program activity centers around the Family Group View where you access program
functions from the toolbar and the menu bar. However, you can change this default
setting so that Companion will always start with the Home Base.
§ Select files.
§ Find an individual.
§ View family group, ancestors, descendants, hourglass, or a bow tie chart.
§ Preview, Publish and Print reports.
§ Run Personal Ancestral File.
§ Set preferences.
§ From the menu bar, select File, Preferences and click on Home Base ( Ö =
on).
OR
§ From Home Base select Preferences, then Options, and double-click on
Turn Home Base On (or Off).
If you turn off the Home Base option, Home Base will still be available from the tool
bar, and you can change your preference at any time.

Clicking on any of the function buttons creates a scroll list of choices for that function
in the center window (Choices). In some cases, a sample or informative message
appears in the far right (Preview) window.
The action buttons OK, Exit, and Help are presented at the bottom of the screen.
Note: Pressing the Exit button will exit the program, not just the Home Base screen.
Note: The name of the current subject is always displayed at the top of the Home
Base screen.

Note: If you previously unlocked the Companion and you recently changed your
computer or hard drive, the Companion will revert to an evaluation version. If this
happens, locate your printed Unlock Certificate and use the PIN and unlock key to
unlock again. You do not need to call the telephone number on the unlock screen.
These limitations will be removed when you purchase an unlock key and unlock the
Companion.
You will see the following message if your unlock was successful.

If your unlock was not successful, check that the unlock key is correct and the credit
card number is from the same credit card you used to purchase the unlock key. You
need to enter both the PIN and the unlock key for the unlock to work. Do not include
any dashes or other punctuation when you enter your PIN and your unlock key.
Unlock Certificate
Your unlock certificate should now print. Please keep this certificate in a safe place
as this is your proof of purchase and you will need the unlock key if you change
computers or replace your hard drive.
The unlock will take effect immediately and all program limitations will be removed.

By unlocking the Companion you are agreeing to the same terms and conditions of
the license agreement you accepted when you first installed this program. In
addition, you agree to use this unlock key to unlock a single copy of the Companion
for your own personal use. You are not authorized to give, share or otherwise
communicate this unlock key for the purposes of unlocking other evaluation copies of
the Companion.

Window
Windows are framed rectangular areas of your computer screen where your program
information is presented. You can have one or many windows open at a time. Each
program has a main window (the program window), that stays open as long as the
program is running. Many other windows, such as dialog boxes, scroll lists, and
menus open and close as they are required.
The active (foreground) window's title bar is in color. Inactive (background) title bars
are white or gray.
In the example above, there are three windows open, the Companion program
window, the Home Base window and the Ancestor View Options window. The
Ancestor View Options window is a dialog box and is the active window.
Title Bar
The title bar is found at the very top of each window and contains, in this case, the
name of the PAF file in use. Window control buttons are also located in the top right
corner of the title bar. You can use these to minimize or maximize the window
size or even to close the window by clicking on the button .
Menu Bar
The menu bar is found beneath the title bar on many windows and contains a
PAF Companion 5.2 User Guide Copyright ã 2004 2005 Progeny Software Inc. 03-Mar-2005
135
horizontal list of menu items. Clicking a menu item will either execute a command,
display a sub-menu (pop down), or display a dialog box. Clicking on a command
name executes the command. Some menu items are followed by the characters "..."
indicating that a secondary menu (or list of choices) exists.
Scroll Bars
When a window contains too much information to display within its boundaries, a
scroll bar appears along the right side or bottom of the window. Clicking the arrows
at the ends of the scroll bar causes the information to scroll in the indicated
direction, bringing hidden information into view.
What Is a Toolbar?
Many windows programs include a toolbar (usually at the top of the window under
the menu bar) that contains a series of icons. Each icon graphically represents a
program function that is also available on the menu bar.
Companion's Toolbar
The toolbar is offered as a time-saving feature and provides quick access to the most
commonly used commands in the menus. Clicking on the icon executes the
command.
Status Bar
At the bottom of most windows is a status bar, that contains descriptive information
about the program or a command being executed.
Dialog Boxes
Dialog boxes are windows that prompt you for further information or for a decision to
proceed (such as OK or Cancel).
For example, when you execute an Options command, a dialog box will appear,
asking you which options you wish to use. Dialog boxes cannot be minimized or
made inactive. You must respond to the dialog box or cancel the command before
proceeding.

Scroll Lists
Scroll lists present choices that you can browse by moving the scroll bar up or down.
You make your selection by pointing to and clicking on your choice (highlighting) and
then clicking OK.
Note: This user guide assumes that you are using a right-handed mouse. If you
are using a left-handed mouse, simply reverse the instructions for the left and
right mouse buttons.
Click. This refers to positioning the mouse pointer on a command (or its icon) and
pressing the left mouse button once to execute the command. In many cases (such
as dialog boxes), a choice of commands is presented (for example, OK, cancel,
options), one of which must be clicked to proceed. In these cases, one of the
commands (usually OK) is highlighted or has a box around it. This is the default
command or response, and pressing the Enter key has the same effect as clicking
the command.
Select. This refers to positioning the mouse pointer on an item or command and
pressing the left mouse button, which will highlight that item. Once selected, you
can then choose a command to perform. For example, in a scroll list, you make
your selection and then click OK. You can also select more than one item by
holding the left mouse button down while moving (dragging) the mouse pointer
across the area to be selected.
