STORIES FROM THE FRONT LINES
OF ECONOMIC JUSTICE AND RECOVERY
ARTIST PROFILE: RHA GODDESS
Combining vibrant images, linguistic brilliance, hip-hop
rhythms, and unflappable honesty, the work of Rha
Goddess, performing artist, activist, and social entrepre-
neur, is legendary. Her work has been internationally
featured in several compilations, anthologies, forums and
festivals. She has received rave industry reviews from
Time Magazine, Ms. Magazine, The Source, XXL, and
Interview, among others. As Founder and CEO of Divine
Dime Entertainment, Ltd., she was one of the first women
in Hip Hop to independently market and commercially
distribute her music world wide. In May 2000, Essence
Magazine recognized Rha as one of 30 Women to Watch
in the new millennium. In 2002, BAM’s prestigious Next
Wave festival’s NextNext series chose her as one of six
artists deemed to be influential in the next decade.

In 2005, Rha co-wrote and co-produced the international hit “All Over The World”
(Uptoyoutoo) which launched MTV’s Africa Channel. In 2006, Rha’s debut solo
theatrical work “LOW”: Meditations Trilogy Pt. I premiered for sold out audiences at
the prestigious Humana Festival for New American Plays and toured nationally to
sold out venues and rave reviews including her sold out off-Broadway Premiere at
the Under the Radar Festival at the Public Theater in 2008.

In her 30+ year tenure as a creative organizer, Rha has worked on issues of racial
justice and equality, electoral politics, offender aid and restoration, mental health
and youth and young women’s empowerment. She was the first International
Spokeswoman for the Universal Zulu Nation, the largest global organization
dedicated to the preservation of Hip Hop Culture, and co-founded the Sista II Sista
Freedom School for Young Women of Color. Rha is also the Creator and Executive
Producer of the critically acclaimed young women’s performance movement, “We
Got Issues!” and the Hip Hop Mental Health Project.

In her latest venture, she combines her business savvy with her longstanding passion
for social change to create Move The Crowd, an entrepreneurial training and devel-
opment company designed for social entrepreneurs of the hip-hop generation.
ARTIST STATEMENT ON OPPORTUNITY NOW!
As I have watched the economy unravel, I have had many questions: What had
gone wrong? How bad is it for everyday hardworking people? How was the
much-maligned economic stimulus helping people and communities? How could
organizations like The Opportunity Agenda spur a recovery that lays the foundation
for a fairer and more just economy?

My first step was to understand The Opportunity Agenda’s work. I participated in a

leadership training program that The Opportunity Agenda hosted, and I spent time
with activists from around the country who were deeply committed to common-
sense solutions that are both equitable and transformational. Then I met with
everyday people in Columbus, Ohio; in New York City; and in Oakland, California.

I traced the economy’s impact on the ground, so I could capture the struggles of
people coping with foreclosures, joblessness, and lack of transportation. I needed to
see and hear past the facts and figures to reach the unheard and ignored stories. As
I developed the work, I chose to engage voices on a number of distinct levels.

I wanted to trace advocacy from the legislature to the grassroots, and into the
living rooms of the most affected people. I wanted to understand the views of
those advocating for others, and I wanted to know the people who were being
advocated for. More than that, I wanted to know how the economy was
affecting people’s ability to survive and thrive day-to-day. I wanted to know
what moved people to stand up, fight, and band together, or give up, remain
silent, and isolated.

I wanted to find the intersecting lines that challenge the ones we tend to draw.
You know: the assumptions we sometimes make about why misfortune lands
upon the doorsteps of others and not our own. During my interviews, I came
to recognize that there were very few doorways where misfortune had not
crossed. And this gave me an insight not only into the magnitude of this crisis,
but also a window into the wealth of opportunity before us.

My mission as an artist and activist lives at the center of The Opportunity Agenda’s
work, to move hearts, minds and policy towards the vision of a more just and
sustainable economy that works for the benefit of us all. It is in this spirit that I
present. . . Opportunity Now!

To Jason, Juhu, Alan, Janet, Eva-Marie and my entire family at The Opportunity
Agenda. . . it has been an honor and a privilege.
