Martin’s West was abuzz on April 10 as students and volunteers scurried from place to place in preparation for the ceremony. There
were medals to pick up and photos to take, all in advance of the big moment when the more than 500 new, repeating and endowed
Carson Scholars would make their grand entrance. Dr. Ben
The big moment was the Ben Carson Scholars Fund’s 15th Annual Awards Banquet. The event was a celebration of the students that Carson
earned the coveted scholarships this year.
The Carson Scholar Fund was established to provide recognition to students that exhibit exemplary scholarship and display signs a
humanitarian qualities through community service above and beyond what is required. According to the program literature, the book for

As well as giving students a $1,000 scholarship and an opportunity to be showcased, the luncheon event provided
a variety of inspirational words from some special award recipients. Along with the students, Jim Sinegal, co-founder
and CEO of Costco Wholesale, received the Lifetime Achievement Award; Roland Betts, founder and chairman of
Chelsea Piers LP, received the Leadership Award; Francis S. Collins, MD, PhD, director of the National Institutes of
Health, received the Trailblazer Award and John Harbaugh, head coach of the Baltimore Ravens, received the Power
of Excellence Award.
While each of the honorees made a different contribution through their work, their comments to the students
and families in the audience were very similar. Each talked about being of service, calling on the students to use
their talents to improve the world and make things better. Dr. Collins called on the students to take
his work on the Genome Project to the next level, using it to find cures to diseases or
unlock other mysteries of the human body. Coach Harbaugh told student to find
ways to impact others today, by looking around for a student that is struggling
and offer to help – to be a friend, to make their load a little easier.
