Synopsis

Women constitute almost half of the population in the world. But the hegemonic masculine
ideology made them suffer a lot as they were denied equal opportunities in different parts
of the world. The rise of feminist ideas has, however, led to the tremendous improvement
of women's condition through out the world in recent times. The decisions an educated
woman makes as a self-reliant, informed, responsible citizen, effect lasting social change in
her own life, her family and society. Access to education has been one of the most pressing
demands of theses women's rights movements. Women's education in India has also been a
major preoccupation of both the government and civil society as educated women are more
vigilant towards the need of education for children and can take care of their children in a
better way. This will eventually enhance our total literacy rate. Women education in India
is the need of the hour if we want a better future for our children and better living standards
for our countrymen. The aim of the show will be to spread the awareness about the need
for women’s education, obstacles in the way to empowering them and to know what are
the government’s palns.

Script Outline

Show begins with the montage, followed by show’s name with some background music.
The host introduces the audience to the topic of discussion “Women’s education in India”.
He/she will throw some light on the history of women’s education in India and its present
situation by adding some facts like in 1971 only 22% of Indian women were literate, but by
the end of 2001 54.16% female were literate. The growth of female literacy rate is 14.87%
as compared to 11.72 % of that of male literacy rate.
Then he/she’ll introduce the panelists starting from the Minister from WCD moving on to
the male panelist and finally the ‘well-educated’ women.
The discussion will start with host asking the question to Mrs.Tirath about the official
status of women’s education in India, and some facts for the same. Also questions
regarding government’s steps in the same direction will be asked.
Then the host will move on to Mrs.Kiran Bedi posing questions regarding importance of
women’s education in India and comparison with women in other countries.
Then the male guest will be asked about his views on the issue and reasons for them. The
host can then let the guests have a group discussion with few inputs off and on from his
side.

The next section will include a short vtp seeking views from the citizens of India on the
issue of women’s education in India and its comparison to other countries as well. The
people in the vtp will be from varied age groups, professions and cultural and economic
backgrounds. The host may then ask for response of the panelists after viewing the vtp.

Towards the end he may ask the minister Mrs.Tirath and Mrs. Bedi to talk about the
various obstacles in the way to educating women, like gender discrimination still persists
in India and lot more needs to be done in the field of women's education in India. The gap
in the male-female literacy rate is just a simple indicator. While the male literary rate is
more than 75% according to the 2001 census, the female literacy rate is just
54.16%.,prevailing prejudices, low enrollment of girl child in the schools, engagements of
girl children in domestic works and high drop out rate are major obstacles in the path of
making all Indian women educated. What government is doing to overcome these
obstacles, what women should do and what the citizens can do to educate and empower
women.

The host will finally conclude by summing up what everybody said and draw a conclusion
to the group discussion and thank the guests ending the show.
