A FAMOUS SPANIARD OF JEREMIE’S ROOTS ORGANIZES A CONCERT OF SOLIDARITY IN FAVOR OF 

HAITI

I can not help but being filled with pride when a close relative is honoring his parents by his 
magnanimous and altruistic actions. At the painful moment when Haitians are facing the most 
critical times of their lives, a descendant of the famous city of Jérémie , of Haitian‐Spanish origin, 
is organizing a concert of solidarity for Haiti .

Carlos Jean, the son of my cousin, Jean Robert Jean, a native of Jérémie and Julia, a Spanish 
woman from Galicia , is making the headlines in Europe, putting his artistic talents as a musician 
for victims of the recent earthquake that has devastated much of the infrastructure of Haiti . The 
date of this concert: January 26, 2010. Place: Pacha Nightclub in Madrid , Spain .

The idea of a concert with some musician friends of Carlos in Madrid in a club, to attract two 
thousand people and send the profits to Haiti was very frugal. But when the promotion and 
broadcasting of the original concert had reached the electronic network of Facebook, 
"Mezclando por Haiti ", (the name of the event), this philanthropic initiative took major 
proportions now legendary.

Now, the charitable organization, Oxfam International and the Spanish Government has 
established a partnership with Carlos to help ensure the fair distribution of funds raised from

this concert with credible organizations working in Haiti . For the artist and his father are 
concerned that the revenue is allocated and used properly.

I remember the morning that I have received the phone call, on Wednesday, December 13th, at 
four o'clock in the morning. A voice choked with sadness and melancholy woke me up then from 
the torpor of a bad nightmare and was venting his feelings on the situation in Haiti . It was my 
cousin Jean Robert Jean, who called me from Cadiz , a city in Southern Spain where he lives, to 
express his apprehension of not being able to communicate with his father, Antoine and his 
concern for other relatives in Haiti .

I remember our efforts to reassure one another, or at least to mentally resign ourselves for the 
possibility that bad news were going to hit our doors at any time. We already planned measures 
to bring wellness to Jérémie. Finally, he announced me the decision of his son Carlos to help 
victims of the January 12 earthquake.

This idea was positive and comforting. It caressed our minds at that moment of despair and 
sadness and invaded our state of mind. Then, we became enamored with feelings of pride that 
we haven’t done a bad job raising our children.

The gesture of Jean Carlos ennobles, not only his parents but will be, like another famous 
Haitian, Wyclef Jean, a pride for all Haitians.

Je ne puis m’empêcher d’être gonflé d’orgueil lorsqu’un proche parent fait la fierté de ses 
parents par ses actions magnanimes et altruistes. Au moment douloureux où les citoyens 
haïtiens font face à des heures cruciales de leur existence, un descendant célèbre de la ville de 
Jérémie, haïtiano‐espagnol, organise un concert de solidarité, en faveur d’Haïti.

En effet, Carlos Jean, fils de mon cousin, Jean Robert Jean, un jérémien et de Julia, une 
espagnole de Galicia, est en train de faire la une des journaux de l’Europe en mettant ses talents 
artistiques de musicien au profit des victimes du récent tremblement de terre qui a ravagé une 
grande partie des infrastructures d’Haïti. La date de ce concert: le 26 janvier 2010. Le lieu : Pacha 
Night‐club de Madrid, Espagne.

L’idée d’un petit concert devant réunir quelques amis musiciens de Carlos dans un club 
madrilène pour attirer deux milliers de personnes et envoyer les profits à Haïti était bien frugale. 
Mais quand la promotion et la retransmission du concert original eut atteint le réseau 
électronique de Facebook, « Mezclando por Haiti », l’appellation de l’événement, cette initiative 
philanthropique prit une envergure aux proportions désormais légendaires.

Maintenant l’organisation Oxfam International et le gouvernement espagnol ont établi un 
partenariat avec Carlos pour l’aider à assurer la distribution des fonds recueillis de ce concert 
aux organismes crédibles qui œuvrent en Haïti. Car l’artiste et son père sont soucieux que la 
recette soit allouée et utilisée à bon escient.

Je me souviens de cet appel téléphonique reçu le mercredi 13 décembre dernier, à quatre 
heures du matin. Une voix obstruée de mélancolie, me réveillait alors de la torpeur d’un mauvais 
cauchemar pour épancher son état d’âme sur la situation en Haïti. C’était mon cousin Jean 
Robert Jean, qui m’exprimait depuis Cadiz, une ville du Sud de l’Espagne où il habite, son 
appréhension de ne pas pouvoir entrer en communication avec son père, Antoine et de son 
inquiétude pour les proches de sa famille, en Haïti.

Je me souviens de nos efforts à nous rassurer, l’un l’autre, ou du moins, à nous résigner, 
mentalement, à l’éventualité qu’une mauvaise nouvelle frapperait à nos portes, à aucun 
moment. On projetait déjà des mesures à prendre pour apporter un mieux‐être à Jérémie. 
Finalement, il m’annonça la décision de son fils Carlos à venir en aide aux victimes de la 
catastrophe du 12 janvier.

Cette idée positive devait réconforter et cajoler nos esprits à ce moment où le désespoir et la 
tristesse envahissaient notre état d’âme. Alors, nous devînmes épris de sentiments de fierté du 
fait que l’on n’ait pas fait un mauvais travail dans l’élevage de nos enfants.

Le geste de Carlos Jean ennoblira, non seulement ses parents, mais devra constituer, à l’instar 
d’une autre célébrité haïtienne, Wyclef Jean, une fierté pour tous les haïtiens.
