PLEASE HELP WELCOME (BACK) THE UNIVERSITY STUDENTS…

Classes at University of Texas begin on August 25, so we will be seeing much more activity around the church
during weekdays. Importantly, the first few weeks of fall semester are always times where we have a much
larger influx of student visitors for our Sunday worship services. You will note that those students often
congregate in the rear pews and often try to slip out of church as fast as they can at the end of the service! Since
a great number of these visitors are first-year students, if we can be just as welcoming and helpful for these
student visitors as is possible during these initial weeks, we are extending hospitality to these young people at
one of the most difficult transitions they will have experienced.

… CALLING ALL COOKS!

The University Council is seeking cooks to provide meals for the DSFers this fall. DSFers meet on
Wednesdays. The meal starts at 6:30 p.m., followed by fellowship and study. If you are interested in serving the
students, please contact Amy King (903-738-6692 or amyrking5@gmail.com). Students love any food you
provide!

A Note of Thanks…
My dear church family,
I cannot thank you enough for your financial support toward my recent study abroad
to England. The trip was greatly beneficial to my education. The opportunities and
experiences I had with the choirs and organs in these schools and churches were truly
remarkable. This trip would not have been possible without your support. I would also
like to thank everyone who was involved in planning and preparing the wonderful
reception after my recital this past May. I'm truly blessed to be able to serve in such
an amazing church.
Sincerely, Patrick Scott

2011 GENERAL ASSEMBLY

The 2011 Disciples of Christ General Assembly will take place in Nashville, TN on July 9-13.
"Tell it!" the recently announced theme of the assembly is based on Deuteronomy 6:1-12. It
reminds Disciples to tell the Good News of God's healing love to world in the throes of great
change, Assembly planners said in introducing the concept.
The scripture appears in Moses' cautionary sermon to the Hebrew people before they cross the
Jordan to enter the Promised Land. This land flows with milk and honey, yes, he tells them. But
as they leave behind tents and nomadic ways to settle in houses they didn't build and to drink
from wells they didn't dig, they need to do all in their power to remember the God who delivered
them from slavery. Moses admonishes them to view all that they do through the lens of being
God's people; to repeat God's commands so that even unborn generations will inherit them. In
short: they are to "Tell it!"
Josue Torres, Florida Disciples artist, created the 2011 General Assembly logo, based on the
theme. It depicts three Disciples in silhouette as they "Tell it!" Inside the silhouette is a montage
of images of Disciples engaged in worship and mission.
In support of the theme, the Disciples.org website has created a blog at www.disciplesdotell.org
for members to share their stories about how to be a “movement for wholeness”.
