Two brave students from
Westmount Elementary
School sat in front of the
entire school on April 15 to
shave their heads for cancer.
Karter Kozma and Chase
Petruska have never shaved
their heads before, and ad-
mitted it was a little scary at
first doing it in front of the
whole school.
“At first, and then, once
we talked, it felt a little bit
better,” said Kozma.
The boys gave a speech
to the school to inform all

tal. Originally the boys were
going to donate to cancer,
but he said after that they
decided on the Children’s
Hospital Oncology research.
“Chase was just a really
good supporting friend and
did it with him. So it was
great, because it would be
hard to be the only one up
here. It was nice that Chase

Firefighters fill the
streets of Standard
The Firefighters were out in full force in Stan-
dard training this past weekend. Firefighters
from Drumheller, Strathmore, Strathmore
Rural, Carseland, Standard and Gleichen
received instructions from Mark Heilman
(Chief of Strathmore Rural) and Andy Schul-
tess (Chief of Standard) on their S300 train-
ing which deals with SCBA (Self Contained
Breathing Apparatus). The firefighters from
our rural communities are constantly train-
ing and retraining for different potential
situations, which include Ropes and Knots,
Search and Rescue and Firefighter Safety.

The Crown Jewels of Canada began in
2009 and is now in its third year and
growing. It is a non-profit group of
friends, totally Canadian and proud of
it. Ladies are able to share ideas, activi-
ties and make friends across the country
via the web and monthly letters. There
is a “Queen Mother” over all of Canada
and every province has a rep that tries
to keep in touch with the members of
her province and encourages them to
participate in joint activities. Each group
has a “Queen” who tries to help orga-
nize and encourage friendship and sup-
port for the members of her group. In
Strathmore, we meet once a month to
share a cup of coffee and plan activi-
ties. We are a sisterhood of jewels who
enjoy each other’s company. Our Strath-
Childhood classic teaches kids valuable life lessons

childhood classic Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Eccentric candy maker Willy Wonka granted a

Preparing your eggs for dyeing
Before decorating your eggs, you need to
hard-boil them. Place the eggs in a large
saucepan and add cold water; enough to
completely cover the eggs. Place them
on medium-high heat and bring water to
a gentle boil. Reduce heat and simmer
eggs for 9 minutes. Remove from heat
and fill with cold water. The eggs must
be completely cool and dry, to decorate
successfully.

Make your own food color dye

Combine ½ to 1 tbsp of food coloring with
2 tsp. vinegar in a cup that is deep enough
to cover the eggs. Add water to about the
halfway point, then gently place the eggs
into the cups. Use a soupspoon to place
eggs in the cups to avoid cracking. The
longer they are left in the dye, the darker
the shade. Experiment with different
combinations of colors when you remove
the egg from the dye, pat dry with a paper
towel and place in a holder.

What is Proportional Representation?

To the Editor
If you watched the 2011 Federal leaders debate this
past week you heard Jack Layton leader of the NDP
party say “we need proportional representation.” So
what is that? It’s called democracy, “it is used to cre-
ate a government by the people, for the people, of the
people.” You are taught that in Grade 5 politics. The
current system is a winner-take-all principle. Each rid-
ing has one group of voters that wins, those votes
then send an MP to parliament. The other voters in
those ridings have no representation in parliament.
In a federal election about six million Canadians or
just half of those that vote cast a wasted vote. In the
2004 Federal election a record was set for the low-
est turn-out in Canadian history. The way the voting
system is, there is no surprise that 40 per cent of the
registered voters are not voting. Since World War I
Canada has had 15 “majority” governments only four
of which were legitimate majority governments over
eight decades. And when I say legitimate I mean actu-
ally held 100 per cent of the popular vote.
Why is this proportional representation so impor-
tant? Well, let’s look at it this way for a minute. Do
you see an equal amount of women in parliament
Right now there are very few women in parliament.
How about visible minorities? If there are any, there
are very few if any at all. Canada is about diversity
and open but yet you see very few minorities serving.
How can these individuals get their representation in
parliament?
So now you’re asking how we can change this.
How will it be fair? And what is Jack Layton trying to
get at? Well if you go to www.fairvote.ca it is a web-
site that breaks down and explains exactly how the
election system should work. They want to create an
equal effective votes and fair representation at EVERY
level of government.
What is their definition of proportional represen-
tation; the supporters of all candidates and political
parties must be fairly represented in our legislatures
in proportion to votes cast. Political parties should
have seat in close proportion to their popular sup-
port. None of that sounds at all completely bogus. So
what does fair representation mean to them; to reflect

What can you do to help or to change this and
make it fair? Well, to start off it can be set up in many
different ways there are 80+ countries using this sys-
tem now. You need to check out the website and get
informed! You can not change what you do not know.
Facts: Countries using the fair voting systems have
higher voter turnout. Based on international experi-
ence, if Canada switched to some form of proportion-
al representation, we could expect another 1.5 million
or more additional voters to participate.

Celebrating 12 years of perserverance

SHS Parent Sponsored Grad Banquet
It’s been 12 long years to get to this day but, it’s
finally here….the Strathmore High Graduation. The
students, with the support of their families and
friends have worked diligently to complete 12 years
of school. Who better to celebrate it with…but fam-
ily and friends! The parent sponsored graduation
banquet will be held on May 28, 2011 at the Strath-
more Family Center.
A graduation banquet is a time honored tradition
for the majority of schools in this area. The ban-
quet will give families the opportunity to celebrate
with their child and their friends. They will have the
chance to see how friends have grown and matured
and see where they are heading once school is over.
Our lives are busy; this occasion gives everyone a
chance to catch up before the next stage in our lives
begins. Students will go away to college, some will
move away for work or to start families – a new pe-
riod begins and this is our chance to reflect on the

well, with the event being local, parents don’t have
the extra costs of gas, parking in the city and the ex-
travagant rentals of a limo. At $40.00 per ticket for
a wonderful prime rib buffet the cost seems minimal
when compared the average ticket for schools in the
city at $80.00 per ticket for a limited meal. Even if
you drive to the city to go to a nice restaurant, by
the time you rush in to the city and back, pay for gas
and the meal for four people, it would be more cost
effective to go to the banquet and time better spent
with family and friends than driving on a hi-way.
For that matter, even if you have a BBQ at home, by
the time you buy all the food, prepare it all, cook it
and then clean up the aftermath, you aren’t really
saving any money or time. This is a day to celebrate
12 years of hard work and dedication; to enjoy the
friends and family that have helped get that grad
to this point – why waste it with driving and cook-
ing? Come to the banquet, relax with family and
friends, catch up on old times and look forward to
the future.

Local school helps provide clean water
to those who need it most

Drinking clean, running water
is a luxury that isn’t available in
some third world countries, and
something many of us take for
granted. The Grade 3 class at
Westmount Elementary studied
four different countries, their
environments and services. Run-
ning water was one of those ser-
vices.
“So the kids found out that not
all places have access to clean,
running water, so that’s kind of
a big component,” said teacher
Deanna Kooistra.
She said she knew Fraser Ed-
wards, C.E.O for the Strathmore
Water School headquarters and
founder. She asked him to come
in and talk about the water
school project.
The project teaches African
people how to clean their water
so it’s healthy. She decided to
have the kids learn about that as
well, and have a fundraiser.
“We sold culturally diverse
snacks, which tied into the four
countries that we are studying
and the proceeds that we made
went towards the water school,”

The fundraising efforts by the
kids resulted in them raising
$512.70 for the water school.
“What they raised is going to
provide clean water for life for
over 102 children,” said Edwards.
The kids were shy, but all
agreed they had fun and feel
good about helping out so many
people.
The Water School is an inter-
national organization designed
to provide safe, strategic and sus-
tainable water solutions. It was
founded by Edwards and Rob-
ert Dell in 2007 and has helped
teach hundreds of people. It is
a three-step program, which in-
tegrates sanitation and hygiene
education by using the water
technology Solar Disinfection.
Simply, Solar Disinfection is us-
ing a clear water bottle and sun-
light to disinfect water and help
prevent waterborne diseases.
The money raised by the kids
will go towards trainers, materi-
als, basic local resources, moni-
toring and continuous follow up.

something people do to be
recognized, but sometimes
it’s nice. The Children’s Wish
Foundation held their fourth
annual ‘Lighting up Lives Gala’
on April 14, in Calgary and one

to receive the merit award.

portunity to recognize the out-
standing volunteer and philan-
thropic efforts that make wish
granting possible,” said Jason
Evanson, Chapter Director for
the Children’s Wish Alberta
and NWT.

Hotrods and the Strathmore
community. Thanks to their
support the AB & NWT Chap-
ter will grant over 120 wishes
this year. Together, we truly are
lighting up lives”

for an award and that was the
last she heard until a week and
a half before the Gala.
“We’re now thinking, after
being at the event, I think we
are definitely going to try to

because we support that cause.
I think it would be good for
our boards members and other
people to see where our mon-
ey is going that we’ve donat-
ed,” said Soroka.
“What a wonderful cause it
is, it was so overwhelming. The
stories of the children and the
families that this society has
impacted, it was just amazing.”

It was a fine evening!

Families and community members gathered at Holy Cross Collegiate on the evening of
April 13 for the 3rd Annual HCC Spring Fine Arts Night. After taking time to check out the
food sale table (courtesy of HCC foods classes and parent donations), everyone moved
into the gym to peruse the student artwork covering the gym walls then settled themselves
to enjoy the concert. The program for the evening included Drama 7’s “Rapunzel”, Senior
Drama’s portrayal of the Stations of the Cross, and musical performances by the Grade
7 and 8/9 African Drumming classes, Grade 7, 8/9 and Senior High bands and the HCC
Glee Club. The evening ended with special guests - the senior band from Notre Dame
Collegiate (High River) playing two pieces, followed by a combined performance by NDC
and HCC senior bands. The NDC/HCC bands will be making a joint trip to perform in the
Anaheim Band Festival in May. A huge THANK YOU goes out to all the talented students,
their teachers and families, the NDC band and everyone who participated in and sup-
ported this event celebrating HCC Fine Arts!

The Grade 2/3 students at Trinity Lutheran Christian Academy show off
their hotdogs on April 15. For the last two years, once a month a special
lunch is planned, whether it’s hotdogs, pizza or something else. The
students all have an option of participating in Haiti day, by giving $1 to
dress casual. The $1 goes to Lifeline Ministries, and any where from 60
to 75 kids participate each month.

The Strathmore Golf Club raised mon-
ey for future projects, while finding a
way to give back to the community,
when they hosted their third annual si-
lent auction April 15.
The event, which is the golf club’s big-
gest fundraiser of the year, was estab-
lished to help enhance the appearance
of the course and help three local chari-
ties that host their yearly tournament at
SGC.
“Each year it continues to get bigger
and better,” said Morris Groves, Assistant
General Manager at the SGC. “The mem-
bership base and even the community
itself kind of have it on their radar that
it’s something that happens every spring.
Even before we post it, people are asking
‘hey, when is that silent auction?’
“It’s a way to kick off spring – obvi-
ously this year, everyone is so tired of
winter.”
A portion of the proceeds will go to-
wards Spinal Muscular Atrophy, Chil-
dren’s Make-a-Wish Foundation and Vic-
tim Services.
According to Groves, the community
support for this silent auction is huge.
“Obviously if we didn’t have a lot of
the big-ticket items from the community,
then it’s tough to raise the money,” said

because they support a lot of those local
businesses.”
In the past, money raised went to-
wards building the deck on the back of
the clubhouse. This year’s fund will be
allocated a little differently.
“We’ve got a volunteer committee
that we developed now, so that’s going
to help us … dictate where our portion
of the funds will go,” he said. “We have
some course improvements. Something
high on our priority list is to really im-
prove the entry way. Obviously that is
something everyone in the community –
whether they play golf or not – drive by,
so we’re looking to enhance that.”
The next major event for the golf club,
besides the actual opening of the course,
is the 2011 Fore the Kids Fundraiser
Scramble.
This four-person scramble, which was
originally the Cattlemen’s Tournament,
will take place Friday, May 20 with a 3
p.m. shotgun.
The tournament is open to players of
all levels and has no golf handicap re-
quirements.
All proceeds from the tournament will
go toward helping youth in need access
the game of golf.
The entry, which includes 18 holes
of golf, power cart, driving range, din-
ner and great prizes is just $100 for non-

Wheatland Athletics Association, is given to
one player from every team in novice all the way
to midget. The award is presented to the player
that shows leadership, spirit, a positive attitude
and dedication. Each squad votes for a player
on their team to receive the award. While the
parents took part in the AGM, the kids hit the
arena for some floor hockey fun.

Inline hockey
now to be held
in Strathmore

After struggling to find a
venue, Lynne Kozma - who is
bringing inline hockey to the
area - was almost crushed to
hear it wasn’t actually going to
work out.
There had been a mix up in
Gleichen, and she received a
call from the Gleichen Agricul-
tural Society president, who
hadn’t known anything about
it until seeing an ad about the
program.
“It all worked out in the
end. Almost better actually,”
said Kozma.
Kozma had phoned a friend,
upset about the situation, and
said her friend then called
the town, explained what
happened, and asked if they
had anything because there
were already kids excited and
signed up for the sport. After
hearing the circumstances,
Kozma was granted time at
the Family Centre from 4 p.m.
to 6 p.m. from Monday to Fri-
day.
“I’m glad that it’s in town, be-
cause if it couldn’t have been I
don’t know what I would have
done,” said Kozma.
“If it’s a success then maybe
next year they’ll (the town)
keep that (space) for me.”
She will be running the U14
team on Monday and Wednes-
day’s. U10 will be on Tuesday
and Thursday, and she said
will alternate the U8 team.
The program will begin at
the beginning of May, and be-
cause it’s right after school,
it will mean no late nights
for the kids. It runs for two
months, with no weekends
and no traveling.
“It’s early enough that even
if your kids are in soccer may-
be you can still do inline,” said
Kozma.
The program costs $160 for
the full eight weeks, and the
kids will play two games a
night, two nights a week. To

The U15 Wheatland Wildfires played a close game on Saturday
morning. The Wildfires are part of club basketball that has been
running in Strathmore for two years. The program began out of
Chestermere, and over the weekend there were teams playing
in Chestermere, Strathmore and Okotoks.
“They’ve always hosted some games here and its just been in
the last few years that we’ve had enough kids coming through
the wildfire program that we’ve started putting teams into this
club tournament,” said Kyle Larson, with Strathmore High
School.
It was a two day tournament, and there are three age groups for
the teams: 17 –years-old and younger, 15-years-old and under
and 13-years-old and under.
The girls played a hard game and were tied for the majority of
the game. With 29 seconds left in the game the Calgary Bas-
ketball Academy scored the winning basket.

a great time. Our next general meeting will be
on May 2 at 6:30 p.m. at the Crowfoot Hall.
