College Countdown Instructor
JOB DESCRIPTION
Reports to:
Manger of College Access

General Summary:
The University of Chicago Collegiate Scholars Program (UCCSP) is a three-year enrichment college preparatory program specifically
for Chicago public high school students. UCCSP provides talented students with various academic, cultural, social and civic
engagement opportunities designed to help students succeed at outstanding institutions of higher education.

Essential Functions:
A member of the UCCSP summer faculty, the College Countdown Instructor is responsible for directly assisting rising seniors in the
college admissions process (i.e. college application, financial aid, interviews). The College Countdown Instructor organizes and
facilitates the College Countdown course and supplementary college readiness workshops during the summer quarter. The College
Countdown course helps guide students through the process of completing application materials for admission to the schools of their
choice.

Dates of Service & Hours:


This position will be needed from June 27, 2011 through August 5, 2011 for a minimum of 36 classroom hours (6-hours per week) in
addition to time outside of class. Salary commensurate with experience and qualifications.

Responsibilities:

Supervise and provide direct assistance to seniors as they research colleges, write application essays, complete the Common
Application drafts, create a college resume, and prepare for interviews.
Present engaging activities and discussions that facilitate students’ understanding of the elements of the college application
process.
Identify the needs of individual students in their college exploration and application process.
Help each student appropriately match colleges/universities to students’ wants and qualifications.
Track individual students’ progress, revise and edit essays and resumes.
Utilize teaching assistants to distribute materials, relay information, and help students in writing process.
Implement and maintain a comprehensive communications plan with all constituents.
Attend Faculty Orientation (June 3rd), College Fair (June 23rd), and all required meetings prior to the beginning of the
summer session.
Take attendance daily and submit to CSP Upperclassmen Coordinator.
Work in tandem with the other College Countdown Instructor to provide a uniform course for all rising seniors.
Submit student grades and End-of-Summer Report to the Manager of College Access.
Assist with other duties as assigned by the Manager of College Access.

Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree minimum requirement.


At least two years of work experience in a professional environment or community setting in a leadership/management
position preferred.
Experience in college admissions, college counseling, or teaching experience preferred.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Organized and able to meet deadlines.
Ability to work well with diverse populations, especially Chicago public high school students.
Knowledgeable of colleges, their academic programs, admission policies, as well as, financial policies and procedures.
Must be a highly motivated and independent worker and possess ability to work as a team player.
Demonstrate strong interpersonal skills, creativity, good character, integrity, sense of humor, initiative, and patience.
Computer skills including Microsoft Word, Excel, Power Point, Publisher is a plus.
