Relics Beta Rules Document ‐ Morale
About this document:
This is the beta document for the Morale rules for Tor Gaming’s Relics tabletop wargame.
This document is intended for use by the tabletop wargaming public and is issued to
encourage the gaming community to try the rules and feedback their findings and thoughts
to us.
We have included, for completeness, the areas of Morale that are affected by ‘Command’. It
is possible to use these rules without the ‘Command’ rules, just consider units as ‘In
command range of an un‐activated commander’ when working out the morale modifiers.
MORALE
The ability to keep your force fighting is just as important as what weapons you give them.
During a game, there will be times when you need to check a unit’s morale. These include,
but are not restricted too:
• Unit taking enough damage to take its current damage value to below half its
starting value. Note, this is the unit’s total number of damage points, not model
count.
• Loss of a commander
• Specific rule; in these situations, the rule wording will provide guidance.
When making a morale roll, the player rolls 2d6 and adds the unit’s Morale stat and other
modifiers (See Modifiers.) to the result.
If the modified ‘Morale’ roll result is equal or greater than 12, the unit passes its morale test
and is unaffected.
If the modified ‘Morale’ roll result is less than 12, the unit fails its morale test and must
observe the rules below.
Death of a Commander
Units that are only in the command range of a single Commander and that Commander is
removed from the game, the unit must immediately make a morale check.
If the unit is within range of a second Commander at the time, the unit does not need to
check morale for the loss of the first commander.
Failing morale because of Melee attacks
The unit stays where they are and the player must place a shaken counter on the unit.

Relics Beta Rules Document ‐ Morale
The unit must immediately fall back directly away from all enemy models in LoS a distance as
if they were on Difficult Terrain. This move is compulsory and will replace the movement of
the unit if the unit has not activated this turn. The player must place a shaken counter on the
unit.
Auto failing morale
Units that roll a double 1 on the dice for their morale checks automatically fail the morale
check, no matter what modifiers and their morale stat value.
Morale and AoE
When a unit takes a hit from an AoE attack, they must make a morale check. This check is
made whether the unit is above or below the 50% strength point
If the morale test is a failure whilst the unit is still above 50% strength of starting damage
total results in unit becoming pinned.
If the morale test if a failure whilst the unit is below 50% strength of starting damage total
results in unit becoming pinned but the unit also receives the Shaken counter (but does not
fall back like from normal ranged attacks as it is now pinned)
Pinned
When a unit that is pinned activates, it may not move or make ranged gang up attacks
(Britanan Grenade Launcher AoE attack counts as a Gang up attack that ignores max
participating models. This will be in the full rules for the Britanan list). It may make normal
ranged attacks however.
Pinned units count their defence as +1 to its current value when being targeted by any type
of attack that is modified by defence.
For example, defence ‘0’ becomes +1, whilst a defence of ‐1 becomes 0.
Removing a pinned counter
Pinned markers are automatically removed from a unit at the completion of its next
activation.
Being Shaken
When a unit is shaken and active:
• The unit moves as if on difficult terrain.
• The unit may not make ranged attacks.
• Suffers a ‐1 to its attack value in melee
Removing a shaken counter
When a Shaken unit activation ends, the player must immediately test morale. If it passes,
the player removes the units shaken counter and the unit may act as normal this turn.
If the unit fails its morale check, it is still considered shaken. Leave the shaken counter on the
unit.

Shaken and obscured terrain
Whilst shaken, if the unit reaches terrain that provides more than half of the unit with
'obscured' status, or activates whilst in ‘obscured’ status, immediately make a morale check.
If the unit passes, the player immediately removes the shaken counter and may face the
models in any direction but may not move them. The unit’s activation ends immediately.
Shaken commanders
Commanders that have a shaken counter on them count their command value as half its
current value.
Failing Morale checks when Shaken
Unless specified in the ruling that is causing a morale check, a shaken unit that fails a morale
check has had its will to fight smashed; remove the unit from the table as casualties.
Supported unit
Keeping your units supported with other units is very important. When a unit needs to check
morale, check to see if the unit is supported.
To count as being supported, the range between the testing unit and majority of the closest
friendly unit must be less than the range to the majority of the closest enemy unit.
You need to be able to draw an uninterrupted line between the testing units and
enemy/friendly units and these units must not be in melee in order to use them for the
‘Supported unit’ check. If the line would cross a piece of LoS blocking terrain or the unit you
are measuring too is in melee, check the next closest unit.
