Making Lotus Lantern

As the Buddha’s birthday is coming on May 10, the Yeoksam Global Village Center is
organizing an event for making lotus lantern on May 3.

The lantern has the meaning of brightening our mind and the act of Lotus Lantern
Making itself is also prayer for the happiness of the whole world. The experience of
Lotus Lantern Making is calming and a wonderful moment for reflection about your
own sincere wishes and also a chance to carry your own lantern in the mini parade.

Feel and experience 1000 year-old traditional Korean Culture! Please attain your
Buddha-hood by lighting a 'Lotus Lantern' in your mind’.

“Coming of Age Ceremony”

The Gangnam District Office is organizing an event for ‘coming of age’ that
celebrates the day of becoming an adult.

The ‘coming of age’ day is celebrated in different ways around the world, and it falls
on Monday of the third week of May in Korea. Turning 19 years old (or 20 at the
most) means the beginning of the transition into adulthood, and you will be granted
the full rights of an adult, such as the right to vote.

If you are between the ages of 19 and 24, join our ‘coming of age’ ceremony which
will be held on May 7th. You will be able to try traditional Korean costumes and
experience the ceremony as celebrated in the traditional way.

Seoul Friendship Fair 2011

Held under the theme of “Meeting and Sharing of the World, and Unity,” the Seoul
Friendship Fair 2011 serves as a venue where traditions and cultures from all around
the world converge. This international culture festival features performances by
invited overseas performers, an international school children’s painting exhibition, a
world food court, a traditional folk art exhibition, street events, diverse performances,
and much more.

The Yeoksam Global Village Center is hosting an event for foreigners to enjoy sports
games with local residents.

This will be a great opportunity to mingle with local residents and experience Korean
living culture. Please bring your traditional costumes to share your culture with local
residents. Feel free to bring your family and friends and let us know of your
availability in advance.

Volunteer at St. Mary’s Hospital

Volunteer at St. Mary’s Hospital with the Yeoksam Global Village Center!

On Saturday, May 21 from 10:00 to12:00, the volunteer group will pay its 15th visit to
St. Mary’s Hospital in Gangnam to help with the preparation of medical kits and
spend time with young patients.

Those of you who have interest in music, magic, arts or different recreation to share
with children are welcome to join us!! (No prior experience required)

Making Jjim Dak (Simmered Chicken) &
Spicy Squid Salad

The Yeoksam Global Village Center is hosting a Korean cooking class on Friday,
May 24.

Jjim Dak is chicken simmered in soy sauce with vegetables. Jjim dak which is mildly
flavored in soy sauce is called “Andong Jjim Dak“. It is originated from the city
‘Andong’, Gyeongsangbukdo, and now is enjoyed anywhere in Korea.

Ojinguh cho muchim (spicy squid salad) is boiled squid mixed with a sour, sweet
and spicy sauce. Ojinguh means squid, and boiled squid tastes good when
seasoned in the hot red pepper paste and vinegar dressing with vegetables. Ojinguh
cho muchim is served cold as a salad-type of dish.

‘Exploring National Museum of Korea’
Collection Tours from Silla to Joseon Dynasty
& Traditional Crafts Workshop

The Yeoksam Global Village Center and the National Museum of Korea is hosting
the ‘Exploring the National Museum of Korea’ program for international residents in
Korea to help them understand and enjoy the essence and originality of Korea’s
tradition and culture in a more effective and interactive way.

An English-speaking guide will take participants to the permanent exhibition hall of


the museum where you can appreciate the Korean history and culture under the
theme of Collection of Three Kingdoms period, with the guidance of the museum’s
professional docent. After the tour, there will be a crafts workshop about making
bronze mirrors.
