Neston High School’s BTEC
Travel and Tourism students
had a close encounter with
Dragons from the local
business community recently.
The Dragons for the day were
Amanda Coleman , Manager
of Thomas Cook, Neston; Andy
Woolley, Manager of Neston
Cricket Club and Tina Phillips,
Business Manager at Neston
High School.
Five of the students
presented their business plans
in the mock Dragon’s Den and
were grilled over their plans which included innovative enterprises such as pedal boat
hire in a local tourist waterway, sun lounger hire in Cornwall, circus skills workshops,
bike hire in the Lake District and a mountain bike tour operator.
After intense negotiations, and some on-the-spot revision of plans, all students were
offered investment by the Dragons. However, the Dragons proved fierce when it came
to claiming sizeable stakes in each enterprise (as much as 50% in one case!).

No such thing as the dog poo fairy!

Cheshire West and Chester Council continued its ‘Bag it and Bin it’ campaign
against dog fouling with a road show in Willaston. Council officers were on hand to give
advice and issue free dog waste bags.
The campaign, which has joined forces with Keep Tidy Britain, asks responsible dog
owners to ‘bag and bin’ dog waste as there is “no such thing as the dog poo fairy”.
The Council’s Director of Community and Environment, Steve Kent, added: “Our
campaign is not anti-dog, it’s about being a responsible dog owner and it’s important
that we keep our streets and parks clean and safe places, particularly for children, to
enjoy.”

Pupils celebrate

Sponsored walkers from local churches are hoping that their efforts have raised
over £2,000 for Christian Aid. The group set off from Parkgate and Neston United
Reformed Church on the walk along the Dee estuary to Gayton and back.
David Hinton and Jordan Henshaw carried a heavy bucket filled with bottles of water
the full distance, to feel what it is like for poor people who have to carry all their water
every day. Both are members of St Winefride’s Youth St Vincent de Paul Society, and
are in year 10 at Neston High School. Mrs Barbara Hulme, whose husband Ken first
planned the walks more than 45 years ago, joined in the walk to Gayton. The walkers
enjoyed refreshments at Gayton, and then home-made soup and bread at the end of
the walk at the URC.

There was no April meeting, instead the group celebrated their 29th birthday
with a meal, quiz and raffle at the Woodcote Hotel,
Hooton. Ann Howard decorated the cake and Pam Potter
arranged the flowers.
Forthcoming visits are scheduled for Holmfirth and
Yorkshire Sculpture Park in May. There will be a visit to
Calke Abbey, in July and canal trip in August. The are also
several interest groups, including a book club and poetry,
prose and plays meeting.
At the next meeting on 3rd May there will be a cookery and floral mini show with
items produced by members.
Meetings take place in St Michael’s Church, Marshlands Road, Little Neston,

Woodfall Primary School

held a Beatles Day to celebrate
their local culture as part of
their Afri Twin project.
This day was a culmination of
a week long visit by Desiree
Williams and Mary Francis
teachers from St James
Primary School, Cape Town.
The children had opportunities
to make posters, designed
album covers, made Beatle
Fact Files and created Beatles
Pop Art.
Each class learnt a Beatles
song and these were
performed in a farewell concert
at the end of the day. Jo

and parent at the school spent
the day recreating Beatles
album covers with the staff and

Summer drama school
Neston’s Little Actors Theatre Company
is offering a professionally-led performing
arts summer school in the town.
From the 8th – 12th August at the Neston
Community and Youth Centre, on Burton
Road, children aged 7-11 will attend from
10am-3pm each day. The course will be led
by professional actress Leila Chebbi who
will start each day with a dance workshop
and voice warm up. The remainder of
the day will be spent on drama where the
children will devise a play to be show to
parents at the end of the week.
The whole week costs £50 per child. A
grant from Neston Town Council means that
a number of FREE places are available to
children from low income families.

Youth on stage
InterACT Youth Theatre (formerly known
as Little Actors Youth Theatre) will be
offering a free drama project for the summer
term for young people aged 11+. The
project, to be devised by the young people,
will culminate with a performance at Neston
Village Fair on Saturday 2nd July.
The group was established in 2007 as
a result of a grant from The John Thaw
Foundation, to provide a professionally led
youth production company in a rural area.
The summer term project is supported by
a grant from Project Rural Matters and
the dates for rehearsal are Wednesdays
11th May – 6th July, 5-7pm at the Neston
Community and Youth Centre on Burton
Road. There is no charge for participation
in this project. The young people will have
the opportunity to create a performance
piece themselves. Anyone from Year 7 and
above is welcome to come along.

Awards for police duo
CHESHIRE Police have given awards
to two officers who put a vicious
intruder behind bars.
The Chief Superintendent’s
Commendation went to Detective
Constables Nicola Edgell Police were
called out to an incident at a property
in Neston last August when a man
carrying a large kitchen knife forced his
way inside. He threatened to kill the
householder and began a ferocious
attack, stabbing him to the body and
head. The victim eventually managed
to grab the blade of the knife, an action
which undoubtedly saved his life. A
short time later a passing neighbour
saw what was happening and
intervened to stop the assault.
The offender was subsequently
arrested and interviewed by DCs
Edgell and Jones. After a full
investigation the man was charged
with attempted murder, aggravated
burglary and drink driving.
DCs Edgell and Jones maintained a
close liaison with the victim, witnesses
and the Crown Prosecution Service
throughout the investigation which
ultimately led to the offender entering
guilty pleas at court. In December
2010, he was sentenced to ten
years imprisonment and a £25,000
compensation order.

Magical outdoor theatre

The most frequently used adjective to describe the hillbark experience is ‘magical’. Out-
door theatre is the most accessible and historical performance style, and is a memorable
way to spend a summer evening.
hillbark Players’ bi-annual ‘traditional’ Shakespearean presentations have both entranced
and delighted Wirral and Cheshire audiences for over 45 years, making them the longest-
established ‘Open-Air Shakespeare’ company in england’s North West.
For their productions, a purpose-built 440-seat theatre is created in Royden Park, Frankby,
Wirral. State-of-the-art theatre lighting and sound systems are installed, but most impor-
tantly, at hillbark productions all seats are under cover - it is only the actors who might get
wet!
Following 2009’s hugely-acclaimed, sell-out production of Macbeth, hillbark returns to its
comedy roots with Shakespeare’s Sit-Com, “The Merry Wives Of Windsor” - one of the fun-
niest of his comedies, full of riotous characters and zany situations.
Recently arrived in Windsor, the loud-mouthed, overweight and arrogant knight Sir John
Falstaff needs money, and he needs it fast! As he thinks he is God’s gift to women, he
is inspired to woo a wealthy woman away from her stiff - but rich - husband. But soon
enough, he thinks to himself, “why only seduce one when two would be twice as much
fun?” And so he begins seducing two local women while padding his own pocket from
their husband’s fortunes at the same time. What he doesn’t count on is the close friendship
between the women, their penchant
for pranks and his own disloyal serv-
ants. Mistress Ford and Mistress Page
eventually compare love letters and
realise they share the same lecherous
love interest. Together, they scheme to
teach Sir Falstaff a lesson in humility.
Disguises and complications abound as
love burns a hilarious path through the
town, and the two women turn the tables
on the corpulent carouser in a tale
complete with manipulative messengers,
secret scandals, jealous husbands and
a final flurry of forgiveness in the Forest
of Windsor.
