The Sheffield (U.K.) based Advanced
Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC)
has a commitment to progress in the
manufacturing sector and, with its close
associations with the aerospace industry
- particularly Boeing - believes that by
pushing the boundaries in this sector it
can ultimately benefit manufacturing
industry as a whole.
A major part of AMRC’s activities
involves investigating new and emerging
materials and establishing how they can
be cost effectively used in manufacturing
aircraft structures and components of the
future.
“We are constantly evaluating new means,
methodologies, tools and techniques for eco-
nomically forming new materials into lighter
flyable parts without compromising safety and
strength,” explains Adrian Allen, the organisa-
tion’s commercial director.
“A major trend we see is that new materials
are often intrinsically costly. Therefore we
are seeking to develop ‘additive’ processes,
which ‘grow’ parts and therefore use minimum
material as opposed to ‘reductionary’ proc-
esses where large amounts of raw material
are removed.
“It was an excellent example of all
parties working closely together to
achieve the common objective, and
in a tight time-scale”
Adrian Allen observes, “whilst there is a
drive to reduce noise and emissions within
aircraft, there will be a need to look at lighter
materials which cost less. These can be
evaluated both in non-recurring expenditure
terms - being part of the aircraft fabric - and in
reduced recurring costs where materials are
longer lasting and require less maintenance.
“A common trade off with many new materi-
als is that although they provide the mechani-
cal (operational) properties required, they are
often very difficult and complex to machine.”
In developing new materials and techniques
for advanced manufacturing, AMRC has
brought together like-minded manufacturing
and technological partners with expertise in
specific fields. Sandvik Coromant is one of
its partners along with Boeing, Rolls Royce,
Messier-Dowty to name a few.
AMRC acts as the catalyst and then actively
encourages partners to work together, basing
its success around the concept of ‘he who
shares, wins.’
Knowledge is then shared or made available
to industry sectors in the expectation that it
will optimise techniques and create new and
enlightened processes.
Mr Allen cites an example involving Sandvik
Coromant, Messier-Dowty, Boeing and AMRC.
“For the new generation Boeing 7E7 aircraft,
certain landing gear components need to
be manufactured using a new titanium alloy
that has its origins in Russia,” he explains.
“Strength with light weight are the manufactur-
ing criteria but only after a sample billet had
been test machined by Sandvik Coromant in
Sandviken and the results made available to
Messier-Dowty engineers could the manufac-
turing process be established and optimised.
It was an excellent example of all parties
working closely together to achieve the com-
mon objective, and in a tight time-scale,” he
concludes.
