SAS VISIONS FOR THE FUTURE
presented by: Karin Büttner-Janz, MD, PhD
SAS President 2008-2009, SAS Membership Chair
Name Change:
We are no longer just arthroplasty—we have grown up and now
cover cervical to sacral, minimally invasive to maximally invasive,
degenerative to deformity.
The SAS is the International Society for the Advancement of Spine
Surgery—we are the home of the spine surgeon and the place for
innovative technologies.

The Board has proposed the change, the membership will vote in April
2011.

1
Goals
• Our goal is to increase surgeon membership to 1000
– Develop a marketing plan and full scale marketing campaign
– Worldwide coverage

• The Board will be involved in a Strategic Planning Session with the

past presidents planned for October focus – develop a 5 year action
plan.

• ISASS will be the INTERNATIONAL ADVOCACY VOICE for the spine

surgeon.

• Collaboration with relevant coalitions to establish our voice within the

spine community.

SAS Membership
Value of Membership

• The SAS focuses on the science of spine care and science of surgery.
We believe that the science of spine surgery frequently generates
important developments that must be considered for pain-free
natural mobility and the relief of debilitating, discogenic back pain.
We provide the opportunity for the educational exchange of
information from the leaders in spine care around the globe.
• You are urged to join leaders of the international spine community
and participate in this truly open, global society whose mission is to
foster the broadest possible acceptance of treatments to existing
spine care. For the sake of your patients, so that you are aware of the
latest treatments, you owe it to yourself to look into all the SAS has to
offer.

SAS Regional Chapters
http://www.spinearthroplasty.org/h/chapters.html

• The purpose of the SAS chapters is to provide a local forum for personal and
professional development, provide an opportunity to network with others in
the local spine community, gather information on how others are handling
spine issues, provide insights into various spine procedures and policies and
build relationships and contacts with other spine professionals from your area.

• Membership in an SAS chapter means access to a local network of spine

professionals in your community that can broaden your skills and make you
more valuable to your organization. There are resources and services available
through SAS that local chapters can’t possibly duplicate, and there are
resources and services available through your local chapter that SAS can’t
