Please tell us about your awards, non-academic interests and activities. (Seminars, trainings, corporate strategy games
attended, sports achievements, clubs attended etc.)

During my university education, I’ve attended a lot of seminars, trainings, competitions and case studies. First of all, I
have an award in 7. National Logistics Competition which have included 2 parts, one of which required a lot of research
about the sector and the other was to solve a case study in a limited time. Also, my group was selected as the second
best team in Marketing Challenge 2011, in which we had composed marketing strategies for L’oreal, T.box and Coca-
Cola. As a strategy games attended, I can give an example about GMC. Our group is a good competitor in this global
competition but because of some faulty strategies, we are eliminated before national final. Furthermore, I am a

Please give us an example of a time when you had to motivate and energise others in order to achieve a shared goal.
What was the situation? What was the shared goal? How did you feel about the goal? What did you do to motivate
others to achieve the goal? What was the outcome? In hindsight, what else could you have done to motivate or
energise the other people?

Last year, we attended a national competition named 7. National Logistics Case Study Competition. This competition
included 2 stages. In the first stage, a case study with some data were given and solutions and suggestions to this
case were expected. However, this case requreires a lot of research about the sector, since we have little knowledge
about the sector. Also, the time to submit solutions of first round was the beginning of the semester. My group
members are very reluctant to complete the study since it was requred to spend a lot of time and there was to
quarentee to pass to second round after this effort. However, I belived that we could success in this competition.
Although my group members were reluvtant, I began to research on the sector and I have learnt a lot of interesting
things about the case study. Then, by telling all my researchs, especially it was interesting and totally related to case
to my friends, I showed my belief to be succesful.

Vodafone’s success comes from the outstanding people that make up their team, and they
believe that their future depends on attracting, rewarding and retaining those who share the
‘can-do’ attitude. Those who excel at Vodafone thrive on challenge, are open minded about
where their career might take them, and are eager to take on new responsibilities whenever
and wherever the opportunity arises. They are building a culture where employees feel valued
and empowered to get the job done, where they work together and help others to do the same,
and where they are passionate about where they’re going. Vodafone is committed to
maintaining and developing a passion for people, believing its success depends on a
workforce that is rich in its diversity of thinking, perspectives, backgrounds and culture. It
aims to achieve this by promoting diversity and creating a working culture that embraces
individual differences and recognises the contribution everyone can make to the success of the
business.

In a company this diverse, people’s individual needs and responsibilities vary enormously,
and that’s why they have developed a Flexible Working policy to help find the most efficient
and convenient ways of getting things done. This could mean staggering start and finish times
to meet personal commitments, switching from full to part-time hours, paid paternity leave for
new fathers or a phased return to work after lengthy absences. Vodafone make it easier to take
the environmentally friendly option too, with free buses to and from work for people living in
and around Newbury, Banbury and Warrington.

There is a strong team spirit at Vodafone and most people work alongside others.
If you are a likeable person then other teams tend to help you out quite readily.
The team I work for are a good bunch and work really hard to deliver results and somebody is always
there to help out if you are struggling with a problem of any sort.

However, there are other teams of people who are not so helpful - on average, I would say that in any
given team of 6 people, only 4 are actually capable of doing the job they are employed to do.
This is partly historical and due to the way in which the company has expanded over the past 7 years -
people have been placed in roles which they are not suited to rather than making them redundant.

My line managers have mostly been very good (apart from 1 who I really disliked).
I have had compassionate leave on a few occasions and this has been given freely by my manager - but
beware as other managers are not so flexible as mine have been.

The staff phone scheme is okay although if you are a heavy user then you may be better off on one of
Vodafone's public tariffs - I am not kidding !
Because although you get free line rental and subsidised calls you DO pay for every call whereas on a
"bundled" tariff you have a number of minutes included in your line rental.
At the top end of the scale these bundled minutes are very generous and work out much cheaper than
the staff scheme.

Vodafone have outsourced their payroll department and it is almost impossible to contact anybody if you
have a pay query.
The telephone line is never answered and your emails are not replied to, although in my experience, your
email will be actioned but they just won't tell you that they have done so !

An interesting point of note is that the company relies heavily on email - many people email others who
sit across the other side of the office rather than walk across and talk to them !
