Marpol annex V, Regulation for the prevention of pollution by Garbage


from ship

Garbage means- all kind of food (victual), domestic & operation waste.

Six group of garbage are


1.plastic
2.floating dunnage, lining or packing material
3.Ground-down paper products, rags, glass, metal, bottles, crockery
etc.
4.paper product rags, glass, metal, bottles, and crockery.
5.Food waste.
6.Incinerator ash.

Eight Special Areas –


1.Mediterranean sea
2.Baltic sea area
3.Black sea area
4.Red sea area
5.Gulf area
6.North sea area
7.Antartic area
8.Wider Caribbean region. (Including Gulf of Mexico)

Disposal of garbage within special areas


1.The disposal into the sea of the following is prohibited:
(a) All-plastics including but not limited to synthetic ropes,
synthetic fishing nets, plastic garbage Bag.
(b) All other garbage, including paper products, rags, glass, metal,
bottles, crockery) dunnage, lining & packing material.
(c) Food waste shall be made as far as practicable from land but in
case not less than 12 N.m from nearest land.
2.The disposal of food waste into Wider Caribbean region shall be made
as far as practicable from land but in any case not less than 3 N.m
from nearest land which have been passed through a comminuter or
grinder with a screen openings not greater than 25mm.

Disposal of Garbage outside special areas


1.The disposal into sea of all plastic including but not limited to
synthetic ropes, synthetic fishing nets, and plastic Garbage bag is
prohibited.
2.The disposal into sea of the following garbage is prohibited, if the
distance from the nearest land is less than;
(a) 25 nautical miles for dunnage, lining, and packing materials which
will float.
(b) 12 Nautical miles for food wastes and all other garbage including
paper products, rags, glass, metal, bottles, crockery and similar
refuse.
3.Disposal into sea of food wastes and all other garbage including paper
products, rags, glass, metal, bottles, crockery and similar refuse,
shall be made as far as practicable from land but in any case not less
than 3 Nautical mile from nearest land is prohibited which have been
passed through a comminute or grinder with a screen opening no greater
than 25 mm.

Garbage Management plan, Placards, Garbage Record Book

1.Every ship of 12 m or more in length overall, shell display placards


of the disposal requirement, of garbage which notify the crew and
passengers.

2.The placard shall be written in the official language of the state


whose flag the ship is entitled and also in English or French.

3.Every ship of 400 tonnages GRT and above,


every ship, which is certify to carry (15) persons or more
- shall carry a garbage management plan.

4.This plan shall provide written procedure for collecting, storing,


processing and disposing of garbage, including the use of equipment on
board.

5.Every ship of 400 GRT and above


every ship which is certified to carry (15) persons or more
- shall be provided with Garbage record book.

6.Each discharge operation, or complete incineration shall be recorded


in the garbage record book, and signed for the date by officer in
charge.
Each complete page shall be signed by master of the ship.

7.Entry for each incineration or discharge, shall include date and time,
position, description of garbage estimated amount.

8.This book shall be preserved for a period of 2 years after the last
entry is made on record.

9.May make a copy of any entry in that book,


May require the master to certify that the copy is true copy for
authorized inspection officers.
