“Evolutionary based solutions for green computing”

a book in “Studies in Computational Intelligence” Springer series

Over the last decade we have witnessed computing service providers to continually upgrade
their infrastructures to high-performance computing systems that can meet the increasing
demands of powerful newer applications. In parallel, almost in concert, computing
manufacturers have consolidated and moved from the stand-alone servers to rack mounted
blades. The aforementioned trends alone are increasing electricity usage in large-scale high-
performance computing systems, such as data centers, computational grids, and cloud
computing. An optimal energy utilization has reached to a point that many information
technology (IT) managers and corporate executives are all up in arms to identify a holistic
solution that can reduce electricity consumption (so that the total cost of operation is “Studies in Computational
minimized) of their respective large-scale computing systems and simultaneously improve upon Intelligence”
or maintain the current throughput of the system.

namely, the (a) total cost of operation (TCO) and (b) heat dissipation. However, both of these
problems can be resolved by energy-efficient (re) allocation and management of resources. If Guest Editors:

Although contributions will be open from both academia and industry practitioners and
researchers, the audiences of this book are those working in or are interested in joining Prof. Janusz Kacprzyk
interdisciplinary works in the areas of green computing. Chapters should be written in a manner Polish Academy of Sciences
readable for both specialists and non-specialists to address issues related to past, present and Poland
future evolutionary based methods, models and practices in green computing. kacprzyk@ibspan.waw.pl
