building modeling
ex1-1 : The Materials Rack
exercise goals
To establish basic skills in digital solid modeling and knowledge of the key parameters of
simple construction components in wood frame, steel frame, and precast concrete
construction systems.
performance procedure
a)
Create a single file in your solid modeling application with this name:
3341_Sect0XX_XXX_YYY_Ex1-1.fmz (or .3ds in applicable sections). Sect0XX is your
section number ,XXX are your initials and YYY are your teammates initials. Work not
properly formatted will be graded as a 0 with no resubmissions possible.
b)
In that file organize the layers so that you have three groups:
WOOD, STEEL, MASONRY, and CONCRETE
c)
In model space make three boxes (x dim = 50ʼ, y dim = 50ʼ, and z dim = 18”) and
arrange these in space side by side so that the top of each box is at z height = 0.0ʼ) Put
each of the boxes on a separate layer so that one is in the WOOD group on a layer
called “Wood Site”, another is in the STEEL group on a layer called “Steel Site”, and the
last is in the MASONRY group on a layer called “Masonry Site”.
d) Each on a labelled different layer in the WOOD group make the following:
Nominal is the size before planing. Actual dimensions are different and are available at:
http://www.arnoldlumber.com/size.html S4S is “surfaced four sides”. “G1S” is good
one side. Dimensions called out without a foot or inch “tick” are nominal dimensions.
e) Each on a labelled different layer in the STEEL group make the following:
“W” stands for wide flange steel “I-Beam”. Actual W flange dimensions are available at:
http://www.efunda.com/math/areas/RolledSteelBeamsW.cfm Do not model any fillets or
rounds in your steel members- just rectangular stock.
f) Each on a labelled different layer in the MASONRY group make the following:
As with WOOD dimensions here are nominal. Dimensions for brick are in Chingʼs book at
section 12.06. Dimensions for CMU are at: http://woodruffblock.com/block-brochure.pdf
As with steel, make all surfaces rectilinear. Do not make angled, filleted, or rounded core
walls.
g)
Sort the materials created so that all the WOOD lies on the wood site, all the STEEL lies
on the steel site, and all the MASONRY lies sorted on the Masonry Site.
h)
Deliver the properly formatted file to your section folder on the server by the
beginning of class on Thursday, Sep 4. No late work will be accepted.
