Tip #14: Demonstrate Mutual Respect

May is Asian-Pacific Heritage Month.

In 1992, the official designation of May as Asian-Pacific American
Heritage Month was signed into law. It is a celebration of Asians
and Pacific Islanders in the United States,
which encompasses people from all of the Asian continent and the
Pacific Islands of Melanesia, Micronesia, and Polynesia. In the
2010 census, the Asian-Pacific American population was almost 18
million people, which represents growth of 9.7% in the last decade
with Nevada leading the way with a 35% increase.

May is an important historic month for Asian-Pacific Americans.

The immigration of the first Japanese to the United States
occurred on May 7, 1843. The completion of the transcontinental
railroad--where the majority of workers who laid the track were
Chinese immigrants--was on May 10, 1869.

May is a great month to get outdoors and get active in Pittsburgh,

with three popular annual events:

The Race for the Cure is Sunday, May 8 at Schenley Park.

Registration is still open for the Sunday, May 15 Pittsburgh

Marathon.

benefiting the Community Design Center of Pittsburgh.

Food for thought...

As you walk, jog, or ride through May, take along some healthy
snacks. The potassium in bananas helps prevent and alleviate
muscle cramps. The healthy mix of carbs and fats in granola is
ideal for keeping energy levels high before, during, and after your
exercise. And, apples are a nutritional powerhouse, with loads of
healthy vitamins, minerals, fiber, and good carbohydrates to fuel a
workout.

The April D&R Champion is KEYS Service

Corps, which is the first organization to
be recognized as a champion. Nominated by
Jamie Scarano for its work in implementing
and supporting tutoring programs, community service, and learning
opportunities for at-risk youth, the KEYS (Knowledge to Empower
Youth to Succeed) Service Corps is an education-based AmeriCorps
program. "This group of young individuals is a representation of
how coming together for one cause can make an impact on a
community," explained Scarano. Click here to learn more
about our current D&R Champion.

Do you know an individual who makes a positive impact and

promotes an environment of inclusion? If so, nominate the person
in your life you feel has made a difference for the Dignity &
Respect Champion Award! This prestigious award recognizes people
who are engaged in their communities, live by the principles of
dignity and respect, and promote an environment of inclusion.

The Dignity & Respect Campaign is an awareness campaign designed to join individuals,
community leaders, community organizations, educational institutions, businesses, and
corporations under the common notion that everyone deserves dignity and respect. What started
in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania as a local community effort, has now become a national initiative
dedicated to driving inclusion and promoting campaign launch efforts in every major city in the
U.S.
