India's Trade in Services and Global Slowdown
By Arpita Mukherjee
Professor, ICRIER, New Delhi.
Abstract
This paper analyzes the impact of the recent global slowdown on India’s trade in services. It
found that India’s major trading partners are adversely affected by the slowdown and contraction
in these markets is affecting India’s services exports in sectors such as IT/ITES. Growing
unemployment in developed countries and the slow progress of the Doha Round may lead to
protectionism. In spite of these concerns, the study found that the slowdown offers opportunities
for the Indian companies to expand in the medium and long terms by exploring new markets,
offering new services, acquiring assets abroad, creating strong brands and adopting innovative
business practices.
