1.1: Welcome Email

When your site administrator first adds you to the site you will receive a welcome email. This
email contains your username and two links to the site. One link is to download the Buzzsaw
software and the second link enables you to login to the site via Web Access, which does not
require a software download. (Web Access is discussed in more detail later in this chapter.)

The welcome email also contains instructions for creating your password. When you click one of the
links in the email you will be automatically logged in immediately be asked to change your
password.

You may want to save this email for future reference since it contains your username and the
URL of the site.

1.2: Accessing Buzzsaw

Once you have received your welcome email and there are several ways to reach the login
screen:

1. Click the hyperlink in the welcome email sent to you.

2. Enter the Buzzsaw URL directly in the address area of your browser.

3. If you have already installed Buzzsaw, click the Buzzsaw shortcut on your desktop or in
your Start Menu.

Go to www.autodesk.com/buzzsaw. Enter your site name under Member Login.

4.
Once you connect to Buzzsaw, the Login screen is displayed:

Note: If the latest version of the Buzzsaw client is not installed, it will download and install
automatically at this point.

1.3: Logging In

1. Click the link provided in the Welcome email. You will be automatically logged in and the
Select Password dialog box is displayed.

2. Enter a new password.

The password is CASE-SENSITIVE, and for security must include a capital letter, a
number, and be at least eight characters in length.

3. If you will be accessing Buzzsaw regularly from the same PC, you can save time by
checking the Remember this password option. Then, the next time you login you will not
have to re-enter your information. However, this does carry the risk that someone else
using the same PC will be able to log using your identity.

4. Select a security question and answer. You can also create your own question. If you
forget your password and click the I forgot my password button in the Login dialog box,
you will be required to answer this question in order to receive a new password. You can
change this question at a later time by changing your personal information. This will be
covered in a later lesson.

5. Enter the required user information.

6. Click the OK button.

1.4: Navigating Around Buzzsaw

The Buzzsaw window consists of the following five areas:

1. Project Selection Bar: provides a list of all projects you have access to in your Site. Use the
drop down list to select the project you want to work with.

2. Standard Toolbar: provides a shortcut to the commands you use most often (Add, Edit,
Update, and so on)

3. Buzzsaw Bar (vertical, at left hand side): provides a way to get to the tasks and activities you
use most often.

4. Project Navigation Bar: (horizontal, over the tree and details view) provides quick access to
site and project information pages and files. You can also access your personal member
information by clicking your name. Use the logout button to close your session (this is
important if you share your computer with other people).

5. Folder Tree View (at right hand side): contains a hierarchical list of all the files in the site or the
currently selected project. Click + and – to show or hide the levels in the Tree. When you select

a folder in the Folder Tree View, the folder s contents are displayed in the Details Area.

6. Details Area: displays detailed information about the item that is selected in the Folder Tree
view hierarchy. When a file is selected, choose among the tabs located along the top of the
work area to specify the information you want to view and work with.

Lesson 1
Many of the commands used in Windows Explorer, such as F2 (Rename) and Ctrl-C (copy)
are alternatives to using the Buzzsaw menu items.

7. Use the Project SelectionBar to select the project that you want to work with. You can save
time by selecting a project here instead of scrolling though all of the projects in the Folder
Tree View. If you do not see the project you want, click browse to find the project.

8. Use the toolbar buttons on the standard toolbar to perform common tasks. To see what a
button does, hold your mouse over a button and a brief description of what the button does is
displayed.

9. Use drag-and-drop to add, copy, and update files between Buzzsaw and your computer. For
example, you can add new files to a project by dragging items from your Desktop into the
Buzzsaw window.

10. Right-click on most items to perform frequently used tasks.

3.1: Viewing a Document
When browsing the Project Files, expand the directories until you reach a folder containing
documents.

Once you have selected a file, general information about the file will appear to the right, similar to the
Properties function in Windows.

To view the document, click the View tab in the Details Area.

Note: When viewing a document, your browser downloads the file into your temp directory. This is
necessary for the plug-in to work with the file and to enhance the browser capabilities that are
available with the plug-in.

3.2: Viewing a File in a New Window

Often, the view window frame is not large enough to accommodate the document. Therefore,
Buzzsaw allows you to open the document in a new window, which can be maximized to a full
screen view. Also, you can view multiple documents, each in a separate window, to compare
documents.

To view a file in a separate window, right-click on the file name, and choose View in Window
from the menu.

When viewing a document in a separate window users can go back to the browser and select
another document without affecting the document currently viewed in the separate window.

3.3: Viewing AutoCAD Drawings with Powered by Volo™ View

Powered by Volo View is a free drawing viewer from Autodesk that is integrated with the Buzzsaw
application. It allows you to open, view, do lightweight markup, and print AutoCAD drawings,
including DWG, DXF, and DWF files. With Powered by Volo View, you can view AutoCAD drawings
and models either locally or over the Internet without changing the original data.

A DWG file is the native AutoCAD file format.

A DWF file is a lightweight vector file format that preserves the security and precision of
original DWG files, while ensuring the speedy download display of drawings. The DWF
format was designed for use on the Internet.

A DXF™ file is a format used for drawing exchange between different CAD applications.
DXF files can be opened in most CAD applications. If you want to exchange files with
others who may be using a variety of CAD software packages, use a DXF extension.

Powered by Volo View adds additional functionality for viewing AutoCAD drawings in DWG, DWF
and DXF™ formats. In reviewing an AutoCAD drawing file you will notice that a toolbar appears at
the top and left side of the View window. The toolbar at the top represent editing, panning, and

5.1: Adding Folders

Folders are used to organize all the files (including text files, drawings, links and notes)
associated with a project. You must have edit or admin permission to add folders in Buzzsaw.

Before adding a new folder, select the project from the Project Selection Bar and expand the
folder list to expose sub-directories which will make navigation easier. Folders in Buzzsaw work in a
similar way to folders in Windows Explorer.

1. In the Buzzsaw Bar, click the Projects icon. In the Folder Tree View select where you
would like to create a subfolder.

2. Right-click in a blank area of the Folder Tree View and choose Add>Folder. (You can
also select Add > New Folder in the Buzzsaw toolbar).

Type a name for the folder to replace the “New Folder” default.

Note: You can Cut, Copy, Move, Paste, and Delete folders in the Folder Tree and Detail Area, just as
you are able to do in Microsoft Windows Explorer.

5.2: Adding Files

After you create a new folder, you can add files to it. File types include drawings, documents,
links and notes. You can add files to any project folder in Buzzsaw to share with others and to
collaborate and exchange ideas about the contents, or allow others to edit selected files.

When you add a file to your project, it is copied from your local computer across the web and
placed inside the destination project folder within your Buzzsaw site. The file is stored on the
Buzzsaw servers and is available to other project members, as determined by their permission
levels.

The following section examines four different methods of adding files. All of these methods use
the Add to Project Wizard, a step-by-step guide for adding your files.
