Wooden tongue is a chronic infectious disease of cattle caused by inflammation of the soft tissue of the head and tongue. The disease commonly occurs in adult cattle and feeding coarse feeds can predispose cattle to the condition. Clinical signs include salivation, difficulty chewing and decreased appetite, swelling of the tongue which becomes hard with round yellow lesions, and swelling of retropharyngeal and submandibular lymph nodes. Treatment involves intravenous injection of sodium iodide solution and a course of antibiotics like streptomycin injections over multiple days.
