A Read the text.

Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No, it’s Superman.

S
ince time immemorial, humans have created superheroes, from the warriors
of ancient Greece and Rome, to the latter-day heroes of comic books.
These characters performed feats of great daring, battling tirelessly against
all manner of villains to rid the world of evil.

One such superhero is Superman, the 1930s creation of Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster.
He made his first appearance in the United States in DC Comics and went on to become
a global phenomenon flying off on all kinds of missions to save the world.

Superman started out as the sole survivor of the planet Krypton and was found on Earth
as a baby in his star ship by Jonathan and Martha Kent. They adopted him, called him
Clark and brought him up as their son on their farm in Smallville, Kansas. (Incidentally,
Siegel and Shuster said that the name Clark Kent was an amalgam of the actors Clark
Gable and Kent Taylor.)

As Clark Kent grew up, he started to develop superhuman powers which he used
surreptitiously to rescue people and avert disasters. Ultimately, however, he could no
longer keep these powers hidden and so he created an alter-ego, Superman, who would
appear in public in his distinctive red and blue costume. As Clark Kent, he worked as a
reporter on the Daily Planet; as Superman he went out on missions to save the world,
using his special powers which included X-ray vision, acute hearing and the ability to fly.

There was, however, one way that he could be weakened. His Achilles heel was kryptonite,
the radiation effects of which had the power to destroy him. Interestingly, in a strange twist
linking fantasy and reality, a new mineral has just recently been discovered in Serbia. As
described in the film Superman Returns, this mineral exactly matches kryptonite’s unique
chemistry and has been identified by scientists at London’s Natural History Museum as
well as Canada’s National Research Council. White rather than green, discovered in Serbia
rather than on Krypton, this mineral will formally be named 'jadarite'.

Many would claim that Superman is the greatest and arguably the first of the
superheroes, but one thing is certain: whether Batman, Wonder Woman or Captain
America, they are all loved by young and old alike.
