INTRODUCTION

Metrologic’s MS700i, MS720i, TECH 7, TECH 8, TECH 10, and MS800 laser
bar code scanners are all programmable through ScanSet®, a software
package designed by Metrologic, which runs from a MS-DOS environment.
With ScanSet, the scanner or upload scanner setups can be programmed
without the need to scan any bar codes.

Once the scanner is connected by an RS-232 cable to an IBM® compatible

PC XT, AT, or PS/2, scanner configuration options from the ScanSet menus
can be chosen. After the desired parameters are chosen, the configuration
settings can download from the PC to the scanner. With this method,
programming several scanners with the same parameters is much easier
and eliminates the need to establish configurations by scanning a list of bar
codes. ScanSet allows configuration screens to be saved. Also, existing
scanner setups can be uploaded and saved for later use.

ScanSet is also used to configure Metrologic’s MX001 industrial interface.

The MX001 interface box provides optional interfaces to TECH scanners by
adding a 10-Amp TRIAC output and an object sensor input. These
interfaces act as additional indicators of scanner activities.

The following items are needed to use ScanSet®:

®
• ScanSet software diskette
• MS-DOS, IBM PC XT, AT or PS/2 compatible
• RS-232C serial port
• One of Metrologic’s MS700i, MS720i, TECH 7, TECH 8, TECH 10, or
MS800 laser bar code scanners with an appropriate RS-232 cable setup

1
STARTING THE SCANSET® PROGRAM
Before using ScanSet, make a backup copy of the diskette. Run the
ScanSet program from the floppy disk provided or copy the file to the hard
disk. For ease of use, create a separate directory on the PC’s hard disk
drive and then copy the contents of the ScanSet diskette to that directory.

Access the drive the diskette is on and at the prompt type go. This will
activate the README.1ST file. The README.1ST file contains and
describes all the programs and document files for ScanSet.

To become familiar with the ScanSet program, access the ScanSet program
diskette and review the menus discussed on the following pages before
entering program mode.

To avoid potential problems, do not power up the scanner until the

communication cable is secured to the host.

1. Turn off the PC.

2. Connect the communication cable to the scanner and to the RS-232C

serial port (COM1 or COM2) located on the PC.

3. Check the AC input requirements of the transformer to make sure the

voltage matches the AC outlet. (The socket-outlet should be installed
near the equipment and shall be easily accessible.)

4. Connect the transformer to the communication cable (if necessary) and

plug the transformer into the AC outlet to supply power to the scanner.

5. Turn on the PC.

6. Change to the subdirectory where the SCANSET.EXE program is

stored. Type SCANSET and press the <ENTER> key.

Note:   If there is difficulty seeing the highlighted menu choices when using
a monochrome monitor, quit and restart the program by typing
A:SCANSET/B at the DOS prompt.

When configuring an MX001 industrial control interface box, type

SCANSET/T. This will allow access to the Tech section of the Configuration
Screen. Only select options from this menu when the scanner contains the
proper internal interface board and is using external support circuitry. If the
scanner does not contain the special interface board, the scanner may
become inoperative (lock up) by choosing options from this menu.

2
USING SCANSET MENUS

All of the choices that are accessible to configure the scanner are available
through pop-up windows that appear when <ENTER> is pressed at any of
the vertical menus within the Configuration Screen. At the main menu,
highlight Load Defaults and press <ENTER> to view the Configuration
Screen.

1. Use the following method to open a vertical menu:

• Use the <TAB>, <×>, <Ø>, <Ö>,or <Õ>, arrow keys to move the
highlight to the desired menu choice.

• Once the menu choice is highlighted, press the <ENTER> key. A

pop-up menu will appear to the side.

2. Use the following method to select the item(s) from the pop-up menu:

• Use the <PgUp>, <PgDn>, <×> or <Ø> arrow keys to position the
cursor on the desired menu choice.

• If the menu is a multiple-choice menu, such as the Interface menu,

use the <ENTER> key to select the desired option. If the menu
contains brackets [ ], then use the <SPACEBAR> key to toggle
between selecting and deselecting. Press <ENTER> when all
selections are complete.

3
THE SCANSET MAIN MENU

The following is a brief description of the menu choices available from the
ScanSet Main Menu as illustrated below.

Load Defaults By choosing this option, the default settings of

the ScanSet program will display in the
Configuration Screen. From this screen, custom
scanner setups can be configured.

Get Scanner Settings By choosing this option, the current settings of

the scanner can be retrieved and displayed.

Get Settings from File By choosing this option, the settings in a

previously saved file displays on the
Configuration Screen.

Select a Cash Register By choosing this option, a pop-up window will

appear which lists many currently popular cash
registers. Position the cursor to the desired cash
register and press <ENTER>. The register
settings will be loaded into the Configuration
screen and displayed. Metrologic scanners
require these settings to interface with the
selected cash register properly.

4
THE SCANSET MAIN MENU

Enter Program Mode This function prepares the scanner for

communication interfacing. In order for the
scanner to enter program mode, the scanner
must not have scanned a bar code since the last
time the scanner was powered up. However, if
this occurs, communications between Scan-Set
and the scanner can be reestablished. Before
the Enter Program Mode is chosen from the Main
menu, the scanner can be powered down then
powered up.

To show a successful entry into program mode,

the red LED turns on. If ScanSet displays the
prompt, “Scanner did not respond within the
specified time. Press any key to continue”, then
the scanner has not successfully entered
program mode.

The alternative to choosing this menu choice this

menu choice is to scan the Enter Serial Program
Mode bar code on the ScanSet diskette. When
the bar code is finished scanning, the scanner
will beep three times and the red LED will turn on
to show a successful entry into program mode.
However, if the Serial Program Mode bar code
scanned, there is only 30 seconds to program the
scanner before it automatically exits program
mode. At times, the bar code is advantageous
because with it the program mode can be
entered from the Configuration Screen.

Exit Program Mode This option will cause the scanner to exit program
mode. To show a successful exit from program
mode, the scanner will beep twice and the red
LED will turn off and the green LED will turn on.

Quit This option will close the ScanSet program and

return the PC to the DOS prompt.

5
THE CONFIGURATION SCREEN MENU

By choosing any of the first four choices from the ScanSet Main Menu, a
menu screen called the Configuration Screen can be accessed. This screen
divides into several sections and show different parameters depending upon
which main menu option is chosen. The following sections describe the
default parameters (i.e., Selecting Load Defaults from the Main Menu).
However, no matter which option is chosen from the Main Menu,
customizing the scanner’s configurations can be done through the
Configuration Screen.

The following keys are the ones mostly used to perform various functions
within the configuration screen. The <ENTER> key displays a list of options
for a given vertical field within the Configuration Screen. To select a Main
Menu screen choice, position the cursor on the desired field and then press
enter. This key will also close a pop-up window menu. The <SPACEBAR>
key can enable or disable an option. To enable or disable an option,
position the cursor on the menu choice and press the <SPACEBAR> key.
When an option is enabled, a check mark appears within the brackets. To
escape while in a vertical menu without saving any changed options use the
<ESC> key.

To make programming easier, some parameters in the sections will

automatically change when a different interface type is chosen, for example,
Key Wedge. We recommend that if the interface type changes review all of
the pop-up menu options. Except RS-232 mode, these selections are
typically different from the defaults that are set using the ScanSelect bar
code configuration system.

Note: The scanner does not currently support all options listed within the
Configuration Screen. This documentation notes any options the
scanner does not support.

6
THE CONFIGURATION SCREEN MENU

The following illustration shows the configuration screen as it appears when

Load Defaults is chosen from the menu.

Interface This section provides the ability of specifying the proper

communications interface, along with all of the associated
options for the host device. When changing between
different interfaces, the Configuration Screen will also
change accordingly and will allow the change of all options
that support that interface. The cursor will skip over those
options that do not support the interface.

The following group of interfaces may be chosen:

IBM/46XX, Key Wedge, Light Pen, Multidrop, No Comm,
OCIA, Parallel, and RS-232. Each interface provides a
choice of parameters that can be programmed to meet the
host system’s own distinctive needs.

Codes This section provides the ability of specifying the various

bar code types that can be enabled or disabled for the
application.

Supp This section provides the option of selecting the proper

UCC supplemental requirements for UPC or EAN bar
codes. Supplementals/add ons are the 2 or 5 digit bar
codes attached to books, coupons and magazine bar
codes. Code 128 coupon supplementals are also
available. The scanner must contain special firmware to
support these features.

Misc This section provides the selection of the various functions

including the beep before/after transmit, communication
timeout, normal or special scanning modes and others.

7
THE CONFIGURATION SCREEN MENU
Tech This section provides the selection of various parameters
that can be used with the MX001 Industrial Control
Interface box. The Tech section cannot be accessed
unless SCANSET/T is typed at the DOS prompt. Only
select options from this menu when the scanner contains
the proper internal interface board and is using external
support circuitry. If the scanner does not contain the
special interface board, the scanner may become
inoperative (lock up) by choosing options from this
menu.

Depth of Field This section provides the selection of the optimum scan
range that the scanner should operate in. However, do
not change this setting unless instructed to do so by
Metrologic.

Res This section provides the option of selecting new features

that were not available at the time of this printing. Contact
Metrologic for details.

Formatting This section provides the option of selecting the output for
UPC/EAN/JAN bar codes and transmission formats for
Non-UPC scanned data. Available formatting options may
depend upon which interface is being used.

Symbol This section provides the option of selection how

Length many bar coded characters the scanner will accept when
scanning a bar code.

Beeper This section provides the option of changing the type of

tone and volume the scanner emits before or after a good
scan.

TimeOut This section allows the selection of how much time after
scanning that the scanner will remain active before it will
go into standby/shutdown mode. After entering standby
mode, the scanner can be reactivated by the IR sensor or
the touchplate.

It is also possible to specify the time that the bar code is

removed from the scan field before it can be scanned.
This can be done by choosing the options from the same
symbol menu. Disable this feature for TECH scanners.

Transmit This section provides the option of changing the

Delay delay provided between transmission of bar code
characters.

8
TROUBLESHOOTING

The following are some helpful hints to remember when using the ScanSet
program:

• ScanSet will not store the settings changed in the Configuration Screen
unless <F7> Save Parameters is pressed. To save the changes, do
not return to the Main Menu. Once <F9> is pressed, Exit and Return to
Main Menu, modifications will be lost.

• To enter the program mode after changes were made in the

Configuration Screen, scan the bar code on the ScanSet diskette and
follow the prompts.

• Select the interface to use before making any other changes in the
Configuration Screen. Once the desired interface is selected, any
modifications made within the Configuration Screen will automatically
revert to the default settings of that interface.

• When trying to enter program mode and ScanSet displays the prompt
message, “Scanner did not respond within the specified time press any
key to continue”, communications could not establish. Check for proper
cable hookup and make sure the correct COM port was designated.
Before trying to enter program mode again, power down and power up
the unit.

• When the bar code on the ScanSet diskette is scanned to enter

program mode, there is only 30 seconds to program the scanner before
it automatically exits program mode. When the time out occurs, the
scanner will beep twice and the red LED will turn off.

The only menu selection where this time out does not occur while within
the Configuration Sheet is the Get Scanner Settings menu. When this
menu option is chosen, ScanSet permanently establishes
communications with the scanner. The scanner will not exit the
program mode until <F5> Program Scanner is pressed or Exit
Program Mode is chosen from the Main Menu.

• When the scanner enters program mode, the red LED turns on.
However, the red LED will turn off and the scanner will beep twice when
the time out occurs and when the scanner exits program mode. In
addition, the scanner will also beep twice after it has been successfully
programmed and exits ScanSet.

9
TROUBLESHOOTING

• The only way to access the Tech menu is by typing SCANSET/T at the
DOS prompt and pressing <ENTER>. Do not choose options from the
Tech menu unless the proper internal interface board is inside the
scanner with other necessary external support circuitry. If these
required items are not present, the scanner will become inoperative
(lock up) by choosing option from this menu.

• An improper cable connection is a common problem that occurs when

attempting to communicate between the ScanSet program and the
scanner. The cable is properly supplying power if the scanner beeps
when plugging in the cable and the power supply. If it does not beep,
then the transformer connection is not correct, the cable is bad or the
scanner may be had. Narrow down the possible problem by trying a
different cable or scanner if available.

• If the diskette where the SERIAL PROGRAM MODE bar code is located
is lost, here is a second copy of the bar code:
