ITH HIS scientific mind Bunty Bear had
discovered many things. Unfortunately, a
gang of addicts had entered
Champakvan. All were feeling threatened and
were highly upset.
One day, King Sher Singh called Bunty Bear.
Apprising him of all that was happening, he said,
“Till now we have not been able to nab these
addicts, Bunty. Can your science help us?”
“I will try my best. Your Majesty,” Bunty said
and went off to his
laboratory.
After 2 months
Bunty invented a
robot named 'Cro'.
He looked like a
crow. He mingled
very well with the
children around.
One day, it so

happened that Cro was playing with the children in
the park when 2 jackals-- Changu and Mangu-- came
there. Both worked for the drug gang named
'Traders of Drugs'. They had a toffee packet in their
hands.
Changu announced to all the children, “Today is
Mangu's birthday. We have brought toffees for
you.”
“Hurrey”! and all children ran towards them.
They gave two toffees to each one of them. In
the end, when it was Cro's turn, all the toffees
finished.
“Oh! Who is this new child?” Changu and
Mangu asked.
“He is my friend. He has come for a visit from
Chandanvan,” said Pappu Rabbit.
Changu said, “But son, we have no toffees left

now.”
Bunty had fixed an instrument in Cro's body
which got activated as it came in contact with any
drug. Cro made out that the toffees had intoxicants
in them.
“Does not matter, uncle. I will come with you.
You can buy a toffee for me,” Cro said.
“Yes, why not? Come with us,” said Changu and
Mangu happily.
Cro said to his friends, “Don't eat this toffee just
now. I will bring my toffee and then we all will
eat.”
All agreed.
Then Cro went away with the 2 jackals.
He thought, 'I can make them unconscious with
my laser rays. But I must nab their master too.'

6 Champak
They entered the jungle a little later. The jungle
had a house and a car standing outside it. The car
belonged to Fatty Rhino who was the master of the
gang.
Changu said to Cro, “You wait here, we will get
you toffees and cake too.”
Changu and Mangu went inside the house and
shut the door. Cro saw that there was a ventilator
near the ceiling.
He entered through the ventilator. He could see
Fatty from there.
Cro started typing something on the screen of
his wings.
The message was sent to the Police station. King
Sher Singh too reached there.
Cro had also sent a map of the place. Bunty, Sher
Singh and the police started for the place as per the
map.
Changu and Mangu saw Cro.

The jackals pounced on Cro.

Two laser beams came out from Cro's eyes.
The jackals fainted under the effect of the
beams. Then Fatty also fainted.
By this time, police arrived. They broke open
the door and confiscated medicines, toffees and
chocolates laced with intoxicants. Police arrested
Fatty, Changu and Mangu.
Lifting Cro on his shoulders, Sher Singh said,
“Bunty, today you have saved children of
Champakvan from disaster with your Cro. Thank
you very much.” z

Chuc hu’ s Swing

C
HUCHU TOOK a leap, clinged to
the rope, caught hold of Chichi
who was standing on the ground
and stopped on the tree in front. He
was swinging on a self-made swing.
Chichi Mouse was frightened.
He could not
understand what
was happening.

by Om Prakash Kshtriya

10 Champak
When he came back in the present, he realized that
Chuchu had tied a rope to the tree with a needle at
the other end. It turned in the shape of a sickle and
a thin rope was tied to it. This way, he was showing
stunts like in a circus.
“Whom have you learnt this from, brother?”
Chuchu replied, ”I have learnt it myself.”
“Be honest and tell me where have you learnt
it from?” Chichi said, “I too want to learn the
stunt.”
“Oh, you also want to learn it,” Chuchu said
teasing Chichi.
“Binny Cat has taught me this stunt. Will you
also learn it from her?”
“No, no,” Chichi immediately replied. “I am too
scared of her. But if you are ready to teach me, I am
ready to learn.”
“That I will do. But don’t you want to know how
she taught me to do the stunt?”

“O k, tell me,” when Chichi asked, Chuchu

said, “Once I was simply strolling on this
wall when Binny Cat came from behind. What
could I do? I was frightened thoroughly.”
“I looked around but could not find a way.
Suddenly, I saw this rope. I caught hold of it and
jumped. And you know what happened then?”
“What happened, brother?”
“Swinging on it I came to this tree. Then I
caught hold of this branch and stood here. Binny
cat too leaped on the tree. I caught the rope, jumped
and came back on the wall.
I ran so fast and only stooped at my house,” said
Chuchu. “This way she taught me stunts of a
circus.”
December (Second) 2008 11
“Ok brother, now teach me also,” Chuchu
replied, “Hold this rope.”
Chichi did as he was told to do. He held the
rope.
“Keep holding it tight. Don't be scared,” and
Chuchu pushed Chichi.
“Oh, God! Save me. I am dead,” Chichi cried
and landed on the same wall.
But he was shocked to see that Binny was
already standing there.
Seeing Chichi, Binny said, “Come dear, you are
welcome.”
Chichi was scared on seeing Binny. He quickly
caught hold of the rope and jumped.
Binny refused to be fooled again. She also
jumped on Chichi. The mouse was not ready for it.
The rope slipped from his hands and he came
falling on the ground.
Before he could control, he found himself in
Binny's claws.
Binny smiled at her victory.
She looked at Chuchu and said, “So
how was it, dear?”
Chuchu was not ready for it
but he worked sensibly. As
the rope gave way and

12 Champak
came back to him he caught it.
He was thinking of some plan when his eyes fell
on the needle in the rope.
He caught it and jumped.
Binny was standing there. As Chuchu jumped
Binny tried to catch him. But Chuchu was cautious.
He ran into Binny's nose with the sickle shaped
needle and inserted it inside. Binny did not expect
this.
She shrieked with pain in the nose. With instant
reaction her paws lifted towards her nose
automatically. She herself did not realise what
happened.
As a result, Chichi was freed. He along with
Chuchu, fled. Binny now was busy removing the
needle from her nose. She was irritated and
annoyed that a small mouse had given her so much
trouble. Chichi and Chuchu were celebrating their
victory of escape. z

IYU BULLOCKCART and Chappi Boat were
both egotists.
Piyu Bullockcart transported the farmer ’s

goods in the village and Chappi Boat ferried it

across the river to the farmer’s field.
Both showed cold shoulder to each other. They
never talked much.
Making a face, the bullockcart would say, “I
don't talk to anyone and everyone.”
“I too don't talk to everyone,” Chappi would
also retaliate similarly.
16 Champak
One day, the boat needed help. The farmer
boarded the boat on the bullockcart and went off to
the carpenter.
The bullockcart said to the boat, “See, you can
only get well with my cooperation. So, I am more
important?”
The boat had nothing to say.

December (Second) 2008 17

It once rained so badly that the river was badly
flooded.
Even the bridge gave way. The farmer had to go
to the town to sell his goods.
It was not possible for him and the bullockcart
to cross the river.
The farmer had an idea.
He put the bullockcart on the boat and the boat
crossed the river.
Reaching the shore the boat said to the
bullockcart, “So now have you seen that you could
come this side only because of me. Am I not
important then?”
Bullockcart had no words.
Now both realised each other’s importance.
Both extended their hands of friendship and
smiled at each other.
Since then both the boat and the bullockcart
were friends and lived happily. z

ITH A FOOTBALL in his hands, Rabi
Rabbit was going to the grounds to play.
“Hi Rabi, can I also come to play with
you?” Sami Porcupine asked Rabi
hesitantly.
Sami was the new neighbour of Rabi. Sami's
father was recently posted at Champakvan and they
got a house close to Rabi's.
They had also got Sami admitted in Rabi's
school.
“You will play with me? Have you ever seen
yourself in the mirror? Dark as a coal and on top of
that, long thorny hair like a bush,” said Rabi and

December (Second) 2008 19

laughed at Sami.
“Looks and colours are given by nature,
Rabi. Just because you are white and soft, you do
not get the right to make fun of others,” Sami said
angrily.
“I don't require your lecture, Sami. And yes,
don't try to talk to me from now on or I will have
no face before my friends,” said Rabi and moved
on.
Sami too thought that he would not like to talk
to such an arrogant rabbit even in his dreams. After
this incident Sami almost forgot Rabi and made
good friends with neighbouring small and pretty
animals.
Sami was highly satisfied and did not repent
having broken up with Rabi.

O ne day, Rabi was playing in the football field

with his friends-- Paki Peacock, Ducky Duck
and Deary Dear. They were so engrossed in playing
that they did not know what was going around.
Foxy Fox, hiding in nearby bushes, was waiting to
catch one of them. As Rabi came near the bushes to
kick the football, Foxy nabbed him.
“Wow! Today I will cook the rabbit meat. What
a feast it will be?” with his mouth watering, Foxy
looked at scared Rabi.
Rabi was frightened at hearing Foxy.
He called his friends for help, “Help me, Paky,
Ducky, Deary from this wicked fox.
“Sorry Rabi, I can not help you. With one stroke
of his paws he will make me dead.”
Sitting on a branch of the tree, Paky said
helplessly.
Slipping down into the waters, Ducky said, “I
20 Champak
am sorry too. Foxy's sharp teeth will devour me
very easily.”
“I also can't help you Rabi. If I help you he will
tear me apart,” Deary said, running away from
Rabi.
Listening to his coward friends, Rabi gave up
hope to be spared. Holding Rabi between his teeth
and enjoying the very thought of cooking the
rabbit and eating, Foxy was walking up home.
“Sami, Sami, there is a good news for you,”
coming down on the earth, Blacky crow said.
“What is the good news, Blacky?” Sami was
surprised.
“Oh, that proud Rabi, you know, he was nabbed
by Foxy,” Blacky said happily.
“What?” Sami was surprised.
“I saw the happening, sitting far away on a tree.
All his friends left him seeing him in Foxy's

clutches. The arrogant was rightly punished,”
Blacky said.
“That was not good. What if Rabi is not my
friend, at least he is my neighbour. I must save
him,” saying, Sami ran towards Foxy's house to be
of help to Rabi.
Basking in the happiness of having a feast, Foxy
was merrily walking home. Seeing Sami standing
in the way Foxy said angrily, “Here you, do not you
love yourself that you are standing in the way of a
fox?”
“I surely love myself but it seems you don't love
yourself,” Sami retorted.
“What do you mean?” Foxy asked shockingly.
“If you want to be spared, leave Rabi alone,”
Foxy said.
“Why are you putting your life in danger for me,
Sami? You will not be able to win over him. You
should go away and leave me to die,” a sad Rabi
said.
“Don't worry, be quiet. His entire clan cannot
harm me,” Sami showed great courage and
confidence.
“What did you say? Wait, I will just show you.
To hit a pedley like you…..” and when Foxy in anger
tired to kick Sami, he was terribly poked and
shouted with pain, “Oh, my leg……”

A s Foxy raised his legs to kick, the porcupine

raised his long thorny hair which pricked Foxy
all over his leg. As a result, Foxy's teeth on Rabi's
neck loosened. Rabi quickly freed himself and ran
with Sami's help.
“Forgive me, Sami. Today I came to know that a
person does not gain respect by his colour. But it is
22 Champak
because of his qualities. Today I
am saved because of the
courage of an ugly animal. My
beautiful friends, on the other
hand had left me alone,”
repenting on his bad
behaviour with Sami, Rabi
apologised.
“Well, though late but at least
you have made me your friend,”
saying this Sami embraced Rabi taking care
not to hurt him with his throny hair. z

The Sweetest Gift

T
ODAY AMRITA celebrated her birthday with
great fun and fair. She was very happy.
"It was a great party, Mummy. All my friends
enjoyed a lot. The snacks were very tasty too,"
Amrita said.
"Well, now when will you open these gifts?"
"Right now. You know how I love opening these
birthday gifts.”
Then Amrita started opening them one by one.
“Neeta has given me a nice red vase. How
beautiful it is. And Rima has given a watch. It
seems expensive. And this Japanese doll. So
pretty.”
At last, Amrita saw a small packet, “Let me see
24 Champak
what Sakshi has given. Oh, it is an ordinary ball
pen. That too costing just Rs 10.” Amrita said
angrily, “What a big miser she is.”
“No, Amrita, don't talk like that. You know that
Sakshi is not from rich family like your other
friends.
How can she give you an expensive gift,”
mother explained.
“I know it. But what is the use of an ordinary
ball pen for me?” reacting irritatedly Amrita threw
the ball pen in her bag and forgot.
Not only did, Amrita did not thank Sakshi but
she started ignoring her also.

S oon, annual examination started in school.

Amrita had prepared all the subjects well. She
was sure of securing a first division.
It was English paper that day. Amrita was
attempting the paper very confidently.
Suddenly, the ink of her expensive gel pen
finished.
“Oh, the ink is over. Now what should I do?
Now, according to the rules I cannot even borrow a
pen from anyone. They cut 10 marks for it,” and
Amrita was on the verge of crying.
All the students were writing but Amrita
was sitting head down idly. Suddenly,
she remembered something and got up from her
chair.
She asked supervisor Geeta, “Teacher, my pen's
ink is over. Can I take out another pen from my
schoolbag?”
“All right, you can,” the teacher allowed.
Amrita soon approached her school bag that was
kept in a corner. “I hope that the pen is in the bag.”
December (Second) 2008 25
On finding it she said, “Thank God, I have found
Sakshi's pen.”
Returning to her seat she finished the paper.
After finishing it she went to meet Sakshi.
“You gave me the best gift on my birthday
Sakshi.
“Today, it was only because of your pen that I
could write the examination. I have come to thank
you,” Amrita said to Sakshi.
“I am happy that the pen was of use to you,
Amrita. I thought……”
Amrita smiled, “Forget it let us have lunch
together.” Then onwards, they became the best of
friends. z

One day, finally, she got a chance. That day Ratu
rat was trying to sneak past Billo's house when
Billo unfortunately saw him.
“Hi, I am Billo. What is your name?” Billo
smiled and asked humbly.
“Whatever be my name, how are you bothered?
Stay 10 steps away from me,” moving away from
Billo, Ratu said.
Billo replied very innocently, “You are scared
that I will eat you. You are thinking wrong.”
“How?” Ratu asked surprisingly.

“Y ou know I work in a TV serial. We TV artists

have to look after our bodies a lot. Flesh
increases weight, so I have stopped eating non-
vegetarian,” Billo said smilingly.
Ratu was again surprised, “Do you work in a TV
serial?”
She inquired, “Have you never seen my 2 serials
'Strongest Billo' and 'Billo, the Sportscat' which are
telecast on 'Scarry channel' on TV?”
“No, I have heard the name just now, for the
first time,” Ratu answered.
“That is why no rat here recognised me. In other
places crowds go falling on one another to take my
autograph,” she blushed.
“I don't believe you,” looking at Billo with
doubt, Ratu said.
“Then come inside my house. I have the videos
of the TV serial. You will believe when you see,”
Billo tried to lure Ratu.
Staring at Billo, Ratu kept standing on the way
thinking whether he should go in or not.
“What are you thinking? Believe me, I will not
December (Second) 2008 29
harm you at all. After the video I
will be happy if you eat
chocolate pastry with me.”
Hearing about chocolate
cake, Ratu's mouth watered.
Without thinking, he went into
Billo's house.
Billo too looked after him as a
very good host.
Seeing Billo's video's, Ratu
gained some confidence on Billo.
“In the video where you see me
catching rats is all drama. They are also acting like
me. Actually, they are all my good friends,” Billo
said.
Now, Ratu was doubly sure that Billo was a
vegetarian and very friendly cat.
Billo, on the other hand, could see that Ratu was
slowly believing her. So, she with her sugar-coated
talks took all information about Ratu's family from
him.
“So, am I your friend from today, Ratu?” she
asked sweetly.
“Yes, yes, why not? From today, we are friends,”
and Ratu and shook hands with Billo.
“Thank you very much, Ratu, You have done a
favour by making me your friend. I had almost
grown crazy staying alone in this jungle.” she said
to Ratu.
“What favour? Good people generally are
friends with everyone,” Ratu said.
“Then when are you calling me to your home so
that I am introduced to your family also,” Billo
said.
Ratu replied with excitement, “Come over today
30 Champak
evening itself. I will introduce to all my family
members people.”
Billo was on top of the world. Ratu then shook
hands with Billo and came back home. At home, he
saw his sister Mousy sitting on the sofa, watching
something on her mobile screen.
“You know Mousy, today I have made friends
with my enemy also. What are you seeing?” Ratu
asked Mousy, when his eyes fell on her mobile
screen.
“This is my friend Tetley Butterfly's photo. I
have clicked it today with my mobile camera,”
Mousy showed Ratu the photo.
“The photo is very beautiful. But what is there
behind Tetley in the bushes? Nothing is clear,”
Ratu said looking closely at the photo.
“Don't worry, I have a technique with which we
can see a tiny thing clearly,” and Mousy pressed a
button of the mobile and the tiny thing was seen in
large on the screen.
“No, this can't be true,” Ratu shouted seeing the
photo.
“What happened? Why did you
shout? It is just a cat in the photo
who is eating the rat,” Mousy
said.
“Yes, she is the cat,
Billo Cat,” and Ratu told
Mousy everything.
“I did not know that
such an innocent
looking and sweet
talking cat would be so
wicked.
“What will happen
December (Second) 2008 31
when she comes home this evening to our house?”
Ratu was frightened.
“Let her come in the evening. You see how she
will remember her visit to Ratu's house,” Mousy
said to Ratu and then narrated her plan to Ratu.
Ratu was thrilled. As evening came, the door-
bell of Ratu's house rang.
“You are welcome Billo,” Ratu said, controlling
himself and offering his hand for a shake.
Looking around in all directions, Billo showed
concern, “ What's the matter Ratu, nobody seems to
be at home?”
“Today Doggy Uncle has come to our house. So
all are talking to him inside,” Ratu said
smilingly.
“Not all dogs, only Doggy uncle comes. Once he
saved Papa's life and since then he became Papa's
friend. He protects us from all bad cats.”
“What?” Billo almost shouted with fear.
“Why are you scared Billo? You are a vegetarian
cat. Doggy uncle only kills bad cats, as he smells
them in the air……”
“He catches them in his strong jaws and finishes
them in 2 minutes,” Ratu explained to Billo out of
wits.

S uddenly, to her surprise, a dog from inside

jumped on her.
The cat ran out as fast as she could.
“Now our robot doggy will run after Billo till
she reaches out of the jungle,” Mousy said to Ratu,
coming out of the room.
“Thanks Mousy, today we have been saved from
becoming a prey of Billo because of your plan,” and
he took Mousy in his arms. z

I
T WAS a hot day. Chuchu mouse
was uncomfortable in the house.
He said to mother, “I am going for
a stroll outside and will return soon,”
and he went out of the house.
Chuchu's mother knew his habit.
She advised, “Son, take care. Don't
make mischief.”

But Chuchu would not listen. He looked around.
There was no breeze and that was making him feel
worse. He started searching for ways to feel cool
and comfortable.
His eyes fell on a tub which was filled with
soaked clothes. Chuchu immediately jumped into
it. “Wow! how cool!”
'Oh, it's the cooler running,' he thought and
walked inside a rounded towel in water.
As it was very cool inside, he fell asleep. He
suddenly got up when he felt his body being
stretched. He realised that someone was squeezing
the towel.
Chuchu shouted. Probably, the squeezer had
heard him. He dusted the cloth. Chuchu was
shaken badly and hurt his waist. He got up and
started running. Surprisingly, he could not.
The mouse’s entire body was paining. He
thought, ‘what trouble have I landed in.' He was
almost dead today. He tried to run away carefully.

S uddenly he felt that somebody was picking

him up in the air. He realised that Cocu crow
was flying away with him. He was shocked with
fright.
Firstly he was feeling almost lifeless having hit
upon the wall while the cloth was being dried and
secondly, Cocu crow was holding him tightly in his
claws.
“Where are you taking me, brother Cocu?”
mustering strength for himself, Chuchu asked.
“For my breakfast,” Cocu replied.
“But do you know that you will die after eating
me,” Chuchu thought of saving himself.
“What?” Cocu was shocked. “I eat rats
December (Second) 2008 45
everyday but haven't
died yet. How will I
die on eating you?”
Cocu seemed to be
carried away by
Chuchu.
“Because I have a
serious disease,”
Chuchu replied. “If
you don't believe me
ask the doctor. I will only
live 2 more days.”
Cocu thought that if he had
just a life of 2 days more there was no
point eating him.
If he was diseased he would die himself. If he
was not diseased I can eat him after 2 days. How
can he escape afterall.'
Cocu said, “Don't think I am scared of you. I am
sparing you to see whether you will really die in 2
days or not.”

Cocu moved towards the same house from
where he had picked up Chuchu.
“My treatment is going on, brother,” pointing
towards his pocket, Chuchu said. “You can have a
look at the tablet in my pocket if you want,” how
took something from his pocket. As his mother was
suffering from illness, she had to take lot of
medicine.
Chuchu had his mother's medicine for
cold. He showed those tablets to Cocu to convince
him.
“Well, I trust you,” Cocu dropped Chuchu.
Chuchu quickly ran towards his house on
being dropped. He was very frightened as
he had faced three dangers — one after the other
today.
“Mother, I am feeling very hungry,” shouting he
entered the house. “Today is a bad day,” Chuchu
was frustrated.
“What?” Probably mother had come to know
about his mischief. She said, “Why don't you say
that today is a very good day.”
“How mother? You know I was in trouble thrice
and have managed to escape from there with great
difficulty.”
“Yes, that is why I am saying that the day is very
good. You were saved thrice. Isn't it great?”
“Yes, mother,” Chuchu said. I never thought like
this.”
Thinking for a while Chuchu said, “Really
today is a very good day.
I am alive after facing danger thrice,” Chuchu
was very happy.
Chuchu's mother smiled and Chuchu too burst
out laughing. z

Tit for Tat
“S EE THERE comes one-legged Nanhe,” Sanju told
Monu. Both friends started laughing in
rediculing mode.
Nanhe went away quietly without making them
realise that he had taken note of their comment.
Nanhe had joined the school about a week back. He
had a problem in his leg since he was a small child.
He was very sharp at his studies. But it was a pastime
for Sanju and Monu to trouble him.
Once a cycle race was organised in the school.
Nanhe was also participating in the race along with
Sanju and Monu.
“Sanju, if Nanhe wins the race, it will bring us bad
name,” said Monu.
Sanju, replied, “The race is tomorrow. Why should
not we dig a pit on track itself tonight?””
Monu agreed with Sanju’s suggestion.
The next day, when the race began, Sanju and
Monu cycled very fast leaving other competitors
behind. Nanhe too was cycling, but he was slow. The
track for the competition passed through the jungle.
When Nanhe reached in the middle of the jungle,
he was surprised to find cycles of Sanju and Monu
lying on the track.
Where Sanju and Monu must have gone leaving
their cycles? Nanhe thought. Suddenly, he saw a pit in
middle of the road. When he looked down in the pit,
he found Sanju and Monu were shouting for help.
Nanhe lowered a long branch of the tree in the pit
and shouted, “Use the branch one by one and come
up.”
Nanhe was holding the other end of the branch
firmly. First, Sanju came out of the pit followed by
Monu.
“How did you fall in the pit?” asked Nanhe.
“Actually, we ourselves had made this pit for
preventing you from winning this race. Had you fallen
down here in the pit, you would have been out of the
race. But we were driving so fast that we hardly
remembered about the pit.” Sanju said, with tears in
his eyes. “Please forgive us, Nanhe.”
“Friends, those who dig pit for other, often falls in
the same pit. You must have heard about this famous
saying. But never mind and do not do such mischief
hereafter in life,” said Nanhe smilingly.
Somebody else won the race, but Nanhe, Sanju
and Monu became good friends after this incidence.
T
HESE DAYS
Kallu crow
was seriously
thinking of doing

Kallu something good that

could remove the
bad name earned by
Crow’s his class.
Everyone called
crow as a clever, sly
Goodness and greedy creature.
It was as if the word
crow itself meant
crookedness.
One day, Kallu
crow found a guava
by Parshish that had fallen from
a tree in the
morning. He went to
little Chunnu's
house with it.
Every day
Chunnu's grand-
mother would curse
Kallu for snatching
away biscuit or
sometimes piece of
bread from his
hands.
“You Blacky, bad
ominous bird, you
make my Chunnu
cry,” she would say.
'But today, when I
will give Chunnu
54 Champak
this guava, she would
surely bless me,' he
thought.
Kallu crow dropped the
guava near Chunnu.
Chunnu was happy at
seeing the ripe guava. The
child picked up the
guava and as he was about
to put it in his mouth,
grandmother screamed,
“Throw it, throw it. You
are eating a crow's bitten
guava. Crow's eat
only dirt. Don't touch it
also.”
'Without knowing
anything grandmother is
cursing.
Now what
should I do? Well, I must
go to Chinki bird,' he
thought.
Picking up the guava,
he flew off to Chinki's
nest. Chinki bird had gone
out to fetch food for her
children. No one was there
in the nest except her
children.
Kallu broke the guava
into pieces and tried to
feed the children.
Children got scared at
seeing the black crow and
December (Second) 2008 55
started screaming.
Chinki was somewhere near. She came quickly.
Seeing Kallu crow she was extremely frightened.
She also started screaming loudly to shoo him
away.
“Kallu, behave yourself. Last time also you
killed my children.
This time it will not be good if you try doing
anything like that.”
Kallu was disappointed.
Sitting in a corner of the tree, he thought, 'What
should I do now? Even if I want to improve nobody
trusts me.'
Seeing him sad, Mangu parrot inquired, “Why
are you sad Kallu?”
Telling the whole story, Kallu said, “Despite
what my great grandfathers did I want to do some
good.”
56 Champak
“Brother, the result of good work asks for
patience. You must try again. Come on, get up,” the
parrot said.
Both went to Chinki. When Mangu parrot fed
guava pieces to her children Chinki said, “You are
so good Mangu. On the other hand is Kallu crow. I
don't even talk to him.”
“No Chinki, the guava has been sent for
your children by him He wants to change
now. You must forgive him now. There he is….”
Mangu said.
“What?” Chinki spoke with eyes wide open.
“Yesterday I shooed him away. Forgive me Kallu.
Please have something before going.”

K allu became happy. Then early in the morning

Kallu went and sat on the terrace of Chunnu's
house and started singing.
Again spoting Kallu, grandmother shouted,
“Look Chunnu today your father is surely coming
home.
Throw a piece of bread to the crow. If he eats it
he is hungry. And if he flies away crowing
without eating it then somebody is surely coming
home.”
Grandmother threw a big piece of bread in the
verandah. Kallu was very hungry but because he
wanted to make Chunnu happy he flew away
singing.
Chunnu was extremely glad. He was dancing
away and singing, “Papa's coming home
today. Hurrey! Thanks to Kallu. He should get
sweets…..”
Kallu was happy. His goodness paid him well,
though late. z

P
RATY CAT was
roaming the
jungle in
search of a new
house. One day she
reached a village far
away from the
jungle. Seeing every
house with
abundance of milk
and cream she was
highly happy.
Jumping with
happiness she
thought, 'Wow! Milk
is flowing like water
here. I should come
and live here
forever.”
She choose a safe
house, entered the
kitchen and drank
the whole milk lying there. Then she went
on the terrace and fell asleep.
In the evening when she woke up, she tried to
exercise while walking.
Suddenly, a bird stopped her, “ What are you
doing in this village? Don't you know that the
village is forbidden for cats.”
“But why? How have the cats harmed the
village,” Praty cat asked surprisingly.
“People of the village are inimical to cats.
They nab them on seeing them and hang
them upside down on the tree. So, take my advice
and return to the jungle. This place is dangerous

for you,” the bird
explained.

Cle v er
Praty cat was shaken.
She was a stubborn and
clever cat. She

Ca t immediately decided
and said, “Dear bird I
have decided to stay
here. I will make the
villagers life hell. I will
by Jamshed Azmi change my name if I don't
teach them a lesson.”
December (Second) 2008 53
The bird left saying, “As you wish. I take your
leave as I have some important tasks at hand.”
After some time when the sun set, Praty
decided that she would dine in the pink
coloured house.
When everyone at night went off to
sleep she entered the house and started eating
butter in the kitchen and soon returned to her
place.
When the people of the house got up in the
morning and saw empty butter vessel, they were
very annoyed.
Everyone started shouting, “This is surely
the work of a cat. Search for her and hang
her to a tree upside down or she will trouble us
everyday.”
They searched the entire house and the area but
could not find the cat.
On the other hand Praty was watching all this
hiding somewhere behind.
She murmured to herself, “Truly the villagers
are enemies of cats. I will teach them a lesson
surely.”
The news of cat in the village spread like fire in
the jungle.
The villagers were out with sticks so that the cat
can be struck at the right time.

T he next night, Praty entered Bhola's house and

started drinking milk in the vessel.
Suddenly Bhola saw the cat and he
shouted angrily, “Wicked cat! how dare you
drink milk at my house. Today I will break your
bones.”
“Yes, why not. If you have courage, try to nab,”
