Math 4 - 030 Syllabus ( Fall Quarter 2009 )

Text: COLLEGE ALGEBRA , 3rd Edition. By Beecher/Penna/Bittinger.

Instructor/Office Hours:
Jairo Aguilar
Email: Jjnikk@aol.com
Office: Pierce 2438
Hours: Tuesday & Thursday ( 3:00 – 5:00pm )

Material To Be Covered:
Chapters: R - 7 ( look at the schedule )

Grading:
 Homework(MathXL) 5%
 Problems 5%
 Quizzes 10%
 Midterm 1 20%
 Midterm 2 20%
 Final Exam 40%

Homework: It is EXTREMELY important to work hard on your homework! The best way to
learn mathematics is by understanding concepts and not necessarily by memorizing.
Mathematical concepts will become clearer the more you work on exercises. Homework
assignments will be done online on Math XL. Math XL can be a very helpful tool but it works
better when you work out the problems. Guessing and doing minimal work on scratch paper will
hurt you with concepts ( this shows on quizzes and exams ). You will need to log on to
www.mathxl.com and use the course ID XL0E-S1S0-201Y-96Z2 along with your
username and password. Make sure you check the announcements on mathxl!!!

Office Hours: Because we‘ll have a busy schedule, we CANNOT work out homework
problems in class. This is why we have office hours. Please come see us as soon as you have
problems. DO NOT wait until you get a D or F on an exam…by then it might be too late!!

Quizzes/Exams:
There will be 5 quizzes. Quizzes cannot be made up since the lowest score will be dropped.
Midterm 1 will cover everything learned from day one until the lecture before Midterm 1.
Midterm 2 will cover everything starting from the lecture after Midterm 1 until the lecture before
Midterm 2.

YOU WILL BE TESTED ON HOMEWORK PROBLEMS AND EVERYTHING

COVERED IN LECTURES. PLEASE DO NOT ASSUME THAT YOU WILL GET
PROBLEMS JUST LIKE THE HOMEWORK. EXAMS SHOULD TEST WHAT YOU
LEARNED IN CLASS OVERALL.

Writing Mathematics: When you are working out problems you should write logically. What
does that mean? You should pay close attention to notation and symbols. You should also write
neatly and avoid skipping a lot of steps…usually skipping one step is ok but skipping 2 or 3 steps
is NOT ok!! Remember, I cannot read your mind when you’re thinking about how to solve the
problem. I WILL NOT give full credit or any credit for just the correct answer.

Rules:
 You may NOT use a calculator. I will not give you horrible computational problems since
these are a complete waste of time and may not really test what you learned in my class.
 DO NOT be so loud that you will talk over my voice and interrupt class. Also, make sure
your cell phones are off BEFORE class starts!
 I DO NOT tolerate cheating at all!! This is a very easy way to fail my exams. If you are
caught cheating, you won’t even get a second chance…instead you’ll automatically fail.
 There will be no make-up exams unless you have an emergency. In case of an emergency,
you should contact me immediately. Make-ups will only be given if you provide proof ( ex.
Doctor’s note ).
 Attendance is very important!! If you miss a lecture, make sure you get the notes,
homework, or any other important information from a classmate.

Miscellaneous: Please note that the quarter system is very fast! So, as responsible
students/adults, you have to keep up with the pace and study hard. Make sure you spend enough
time outside of class working on the homework assignments and going over lecture notes. There
are 2 ways you can get help in this class:
1) Come see me or your TA during office hours.
2) You can also get FREE tutoring from The Learning Center. They provide drop-in tutoring and
study groups ( aka “supplemental Instruction” or SI ) as well.

 FINAL EXAM is on 12/05/09 (Saturday)

 from 11:30am to 2:30pm.
The Final exam is CUMULATIVE!!! So please don’t study one day before the exam!

NOTE: Though I will provide you with SOME formulas on exams, you are responsible for most
of the formulas we cover in class. It is a very bad idea to memorize formulas one or two days
before an exam. Instead, I suggest you make a formula sheet or index cards and study them little
by little until they stick in your head.
