Dr H M Mardikar from Nagpur becomes the first from a Tier II city in sixty
years to head the prestigious National Intervention Council (NIC) of
Cardiological Society of India

Nagpur, May 10, 2011: Dr. Harshawardhan Mardikar , MD DM DNB FSCAI FACC, Director of
Spandan Heart Institute & Research Center, Nagpur has become the first interventional
cardiologist from a Tier II city in 60 years of the history of the parent body, Cardiological Society
of India (CSI), to be elected Chairman of the National Intervention Council (NIC). The NIC, a CSI
sub-specialty Council, is the apex decision making body for all matters related to interventional
cardiology. The NIC chairman’s term is a 2 year period.

According to Dr H M Mardikar, “It is an honor and privilege that of all the talented and senior
interventional cardiologists from across India, the committee found it suitable to elect me as the
Chairman, NIC. With India on the verge of being declared as the heart disease capital of the
world, availability of facilities required for interventional cardiology procedures has grown in tier II
cities (like Nagpur) all over India.

It is actually very heartening to see the tremendous advances and progress we have made in the
quality of medical treatment that is today offered to patients in Nagpur specifically and Central
India in general. And I think this is true in all the major areas of specialization. Speaking
specifically about cardiology, the number of cath labs that have come up in Nagpur is incredible
for this size of city and population. Many smaller surrounding towns and cities are also seeing an
expansion in the medical facilities they offer including cardiology. We have cath labs in Amravati
and in Bhillai for example. In addition, the specialists are also very eager to train themselves so
that they can offer the very best of patient care. As Chairman, NIC, it was very encouraging to
see the rise in the number of Interventional Cardiologists from Central India who attended the Mid
Term Meeting of the NIC in April this year. And I am sure this number will increase each year.

More and more centres in Nagpur are training young cardiologists to become super specialists by
way of the Diplomate of the National Board (DNB) examination. This is a post graduate
qualification that allows a young cardiologist to practice as an interventional cardiologist. This
means that more of our doctors are being trained and prepared to service the rising need for
qualified cardiologists in the times to come.

No more do heart patients from Central India have to travel to Mumbai or Hyderabad for
advanced cardiac treatment. On the contrary, there is today considerable patient traffic coming
to Nagpur today from surrounding areas who were at one time going elsewhere.
