Introduction
Hospitals in India

There are more than 15000 hospitals in India, of which 30% are government hospitals

and 70% are private hospitals. About 72 % of India’s population is in the rural areas where

connectivity, availability of potable water, electricity, and other basic amenities are scarce.

The government hospitals provide health services to 65% of the Indian population which

indicates that 92% of the rural population depends on government hospitals

There are about 350 hospitals in Karnataka of which less than 100 are government or

government aided hospitals. There are 22 hospitals in Mysore of which K R hospital is one of

the biggest. K R hospital along with Cheluvamba Hospital is a government hospital providing

affordable health care to people of the district of Mysore.

History

The Krishna Rajendra Hospital (in short the K R Hospital) was constructed at a cost

of ` 3,65,000 and started as a 100 bedded Hospital with X-ray apparatus. The hospital was

expanded in 1930, 1954 and then in 1998 to bring it to its current status. On the other hand,

Cheluvamba hospital was started in as a 24 bed hospital and then upgraded in 1939 to 200

beds when it was shifted to its current location that is next to K R Hospital. Cheluvamba

hospital was also expanded in 1997. Sri Krishna Raja Wodeyar laid the foundation stone of

the Mysore Medical College in 1930, to shift it from Bangalore to Mysore. The two hospitals,

K R hospital and Cheluvamba hospital were then also used for clinical training in the college

and now are the teaching hospitals for this historic college.

Krishna Rajendra Hospital
Krishna Rajendra Hospital, popularly known as KR Hospital, is one of the oldest

government-run hospitals in Mysore that offers affordable treatment. This multi-specialty

hospital was built by Krishna Rajendra Wodeyar (the erstwhile ruler of Mysore) and has a

total bed capacity of around 1,330 beds which includes 335 beds in general medicine, 313 in

general surgery and about 500 in other specialties like ENT, ophthalmology, urology,

plastic, psychiatry and others.

A new multi-storied OPD building has recently been commissioned and this houses a

state of the art ultra-modern air-conditioned ICCU on the ground floor and medical wards on

other floors in addition to various consultation rooms.

It has different medical departments like General medicine, General surgery, ENT,

Orthopaedics, Ophthalmology, Urology, Plastic surgery, Psychiatry, Nephrology, Cardiology,

Laser surgery, etc. The surgical wards are located in a separate building which is popularly

known as the “stone building”.

The hospital has a 24 hour emergency care, casualty, radiology, microbiology,

pathology and biochemistry laboratories, blood bank and pharmacy catering to its needs.

More recently a number of subspecialties have been introduced and patients have had

the benefit of utilizing plastic surgery, urology, nephrology, cardiology, laser surgery, burns

ward and dialysis services to mention a few.

The hospital also has a modern cold storage facility setup in its mortuary with

independent electricity generator facilities to perform post-mortem activities.

The hospital has also set up a bio fuel park in its premises to power the hospital

generator and two ambulances.

 K R hospital also has a cardiology department setup by Sri Jayadeva Institute of

Cardiovascular Sciences & Research and takes care of the entire heart related healthcare. This

is a 60 bed facility.

K R hospital was setup with the primary aim of providing affordable health care to the

poor and rural population of Mysore city and Mysore District. Owned, managed and funded

entirely by the government, the hospital also works with the help of donation and funds

provided by the Mysore Medical College Alumni and various other philanthropists.

Along with the state government and patients being the key stake holders in the

hospital, the students and interns of the Mysore Medical College use this hospital to learn and

pursue careers in the medical field. The hospital not only provides quality healthcare to the

poor class of people but also a medium of learning for various students and doctors.

The Project
The project allotted to us is to study the working of the blood bank facility at the

hospital.

The blood bank facility at K R Hospital was started in 1998. The facility has licenses

for blood donation and transfusion. There is state of the art equipment for handling and

storage of blood. The blood bank currently caters to the needs of patients coming to K R

Hospital only.

The facility is staffed with 14 employees of whom 6 are technicians, 4 are nurses, 2

are attenders and 2 are medical officers. One of the 6 technicians is a senior technician. The

facility also has regular interns working for them from the Mysore Medical College as part of

their medical course.

The facility also has a unique blood Transportation Van which will transport blood

collected at donation camps to blood banks

The blood bank is government funded and has its budget management done along

with that of K R Hospital.

The Blood bank conducts various blood donation camps and drives and also

awareness camps to educate the public with blood related diseases. It also helps in imparting

education related to blood collection and transfusion to medical students.

We are to undertake a study of the working and management of the blood bank

facility and provide suggestions to help them continue and improve the quality of services

provided.
