Report to the Community | August, 2009 – April, 2011
“In 2000, as Chair of the Board of College Now and of the Ohio Board of Regents (OBR)
I brought College Now to the attention of the Ohio Board of Regents and the Ohio
Department of Education to demonstrate how critical “last dollar funding” was and
how effective the early intervention was in helping to close the Achievement Gap.”
-Jeanette Grasselli Brown, former Chair, College Now Board of Directors; former Chair, Ohio Board of Regents
There are few things as critically important to our success – individually and collectively –
as college attainment. The reality is that the number of jobs being created in our region
annually requiring a postsecondary education grows at a rate that significantly outpaces the
number of students graduating from college with the training to fill them. The future health
of our community depends on our ability to meet the demand for talent.
Over the last 12 months, the urgency of this issue caused the organization to reflect on the
impact it has on the community. And so, after careful consideration, we decided to change the
name of the organization from Cleveland Scholarship Programs to a name that more accurately
reflects the important work that we do – College Now Greater Cleveland.
Our efforts have received tremendous support from the community – from individuals as well
as business, education, non-profit and government entities that realize that increasing college
attainment isn’t just an education issue – it’s an issue that has the potential to affect Greater
Cleveland’s ability to successfully compete in the global economy.
The collaborative partnerships we’ve forged over the last 12 months demonstrate recognition
in our community that no one organization can tackle the issue of college attainment on its
own. It takes the entire community to get students to and through College Now.
We are proud of the work we’ve done in the last 45 years, and we are excited about the
work we will do in the next 45. We thank you for your partnership, and we look forward to
continuing to work side by side with you to increase college attainment in Greater Cleveland.
Sincerely,
Patrick S. Mullin Lee Friedman
Chair, Board of Directors Chief Executive Officer

“Getting a college education is not only important for me, but it should be
for others as well because it helps to ensure a successful future. College has
already helped me make my transition into adulthood and it continues to
prepare me for all of the ups and downs that life has to bring. I have made
friendships that will last a lifetime, involved myself in new activities, and
broadened my education. With the help of my College Now/Jimmy Malone
scholarship, I have become the first person in my family to attend college, but
not just any college, my dream college, The Ohio State University!”
-Heather Kosileski, College Now/Jimmy Malone Scholarship Recipient
