bowling benefit
The Kruisin’ For a Miracle
Relay for Life team will
hold a bowling fundraiser
at 6:30 p.m. Friday at the
Delphos Recreation Center.
The cost is $60 per team
or $10 per person and it cov-
ers three games of bowling.
A silent auction,

18 percent of all Americans
are employed in agriculture.
To most people, this comes
as a complete surprise. The
food eaten, clothes worn, the
paper on which this informa-
tion appears, or perhaps even
the ink that printed it are all
based in agriculture.
Agriculture is America’s
largest industry, employing
more than 21 million people
in everything from growing
food to selling it at the super-
market. Less than 2 percent
of Americans are actually
farmers and ranchers.
Today’s agriculture
employs people in many pro-
fessions. They include spe-
cialists in production agri-
culture, processing, distribu-
tion, trade and marketing, the
environment, nutrition food
safety, research, agricultural
policy and nearly 200 other
career areas.
Agriculture has grown into
a high-technology, futuristic
enterprise. It is America’s
largest business. Because of
this growth, the United States
has evolved from a nation in
which producers can provide

counts of trafficking in drugs
and ordered to spend up to six
months at the WORTH Center,
Lima.
Baker told Judge Steele
before sentencing, “I don’t
blame it on the heroin, it was just
the bad choices that I made.”
Baker was ordered to per-

plea to a charge of possession
of drugs, a felony of the third
degree.

Woman faces

violence charge
At 12:43 p.m. on Tuesday,
Delphos police were called to
the 100 block of East Eighth
Street in reference to a domes-
tic violence complaint.
Upon officers’ arrival,
they met with the victim who
stated that a family or house-
hold member had caused them
physical harm.
As a result of the investi-
gation, police arrested Cindy
Rode, 27, of Delphos on
charges of domestic violence.
Rode was transported to
the Allen County Jail and will
appear in Lima Municipal
Court on the charge.

At 1:05 p.m. on Tuesday,
Delphos police were contact-
ed by a subject who lives in
the 600 block of East Sixth
Street in reference to a theft
complaint.
Upon speaking with the
subject, it was found sometime
in the overnight hours, some-
one had went into the victim’s
vehicle in their garage and had
removed personal items from
inside the vehicle.

phone harassment complaint.

victim stated threatening text
messages and phone calls had

Street in reference to a theft.

used their credit card without

nization has withdrawn its
endorsement of the Republican
state senator who sponsored a
new law that restricts public
workers’ collective bargain-
ing rights and led thousands to
protest at the Statehouse.
The state board of the Ohio
Fraternal Order of Police
voted this past weekend to
retract its 2010 endorsement
of Sen. Shannon Jones, said
Jay McDonald, the group’s
president.
The organization repre-
sents more than 26,000 offi-
cers and their families. It typi-
cally is courted for endorse-
ments, as candidates look to
grab key support from law
enforcement officials during
their campaigns.

generations of an Ohio family
learned a routine to help the
clan’s matriarch tap dance her
way into her 80s.
On Wednesday, eight fam-

great-granddaughter joined
Jean Ivers in a dance to the
song “Tuxedo Junction” at
an American Legion post in
Newark in central Ohio.

Ohio’s State Medical Board
has suspended the license of a
doctor it says prescribed pain
pills “excessively and inap-
propriately.”
The board says Dr. James
E. Lundeen Sr. wrote prescrip-
tions for some patients who
showed signs of addiction and
that he often increased dosag-
es of narcotics without cause.
The suspension announced
Wednesday took effect imme-
diately.
In its statement the board
called Lundeen’s operations
“atypical” of a standard medi-
cal practice, noting he regular-
ly treated about 90 people per
day in Portsmouth in southern
Ohio, at one of his dozen or so
offices across the state.
Reacting to his suspension,
Lundeen told The Columbus
Dispatch in an e-mail that he
had a “spotless” record and
had done nothing wrong.

healthy is soy? I heard that,
despite its healthy image,
most soy is grown using
chemicals like other crops
and is even being genetically
modified.

Food products made with
soy have enjoyed great popu-
larity in the U.S. and else-
where in recent years. Two
decades ago, Americans
spent $300 million a year on
soy food products; today we
spend over $4 billion. More
and more adults are substitut-
ing soy — a great source of
protein — for meat, while a
quarter of all baby formula
contains soy instead of milk.
Many school lunch programs
nationwide have added soy-
based veggie burgers to their
menus, as have countless res-
taurants, including diners and
fast food chains.
And there are hundreds
of other edible uses of the
legume, which now vies with
corn for the title of America’s
most popular agricultural
crop. The U.S. Food and
Drug Administration pro-
motes the inclusion of soy
into other foods to cut down
on heart attack risk. Clinical
studies have shown that soy
can also lower the risk for
certain types of breast and
prostate cancer.
But there may be a dark
side to soy’s popularity and
abundance. “Many of soy’s
health benefits have been
linked to isoflavones — plant
compounds that mimic estro-
gen,” reports Lindsey Konkel
in Environmental Health
News. “But animal stud-
ies suggest that eating large
amounts of those estrogenic
compounds might reduce fer-
tility in women, trigger pre-
mature puberty and disrupt
development of fetuses and
children.” But before you
dump out all your soy foods,
note that the operative phrase
here is “large amounts”
which, in laboratory science,
can mean amounts substan-
tially above what one would
consume in real life.
Also at issue is that
upwards of 90 percent of
the U.S. soybean crop is
grown using genetically
modified (GM) seeds sold
by Monsanto. These have
been engineered to withstand
repeated dousing with the her-
bicide, glyphosate (also sold
by Monsanto and marketed
as RoundUp). According
to the nonprofit Non GMO
Project, this allows soybean
farmers to repeatedly spray
their fields with RoundUp
to kill all weeds (and other
nearby plant life) except for
the soybean plants they are
growing.
The U.S. government per-
mits the sale and consump-
tion of GM foods, but many
consumers aren’t so sure it’s
OK to eat them—given not
only the genetic tinkering but
also the exposure to so much
glyphosate. Due to these con-
cerns, the European Union
has had a moratorium on GM
crops of all kinds since 1998.
The fact that genetically
modified soy may be present
in as much as 70 percent of
all food products found in
U.S. supermarkets means that
a vast majority of Americans
may be putting a lot of GM
soy into their systems every
day. And not just directly
via cereals, breads and pasta:

companies to give up these
subsidies and allow their
companies to pay a fair share
towards reducing the deficit.”

lion, in 2010, the report said.

The sophomore right-
hander wasn’t as “sharp”
Wednesday night, giving up
one hit.
However, this was in a
Division IV sectional final
at Perry High School, lead-
ing Jefferson (11-9) to an
11-0 5-inning rout of the
Mustangs.
Jefferson will play today’s
Kalida/Columbus Grove vic-
tor at 5 p.m. Wednesday at
Elida in district action.
“Drew pitches every sixth
day; by the time he is set
to pitch, he is ready to go.
Plus, the 80-degree weather
cooperated today; we haven’t
had too many days like this,”
Jefferson coach Doug Geary
noted. “He had good velocity
today and was spotting the
ball very well. He was throw-
ing his curveball and chan-
geup for strikes, really mix-
ing it up. Plus, our defense
made the plays they needed
to make.”
Allen East coach Kevin
Schelb also credited the soph-
omore.
“He is an outstanding
pitcher; he is one of the best
we have faced this year,” he
noted. “He did this to us two
times this year; he is a top-
quality pitcher.”
When Kortokrax (3-2;
5 innings, 2 bases-on-balls,
8 strikeouts; 78 pitches, 48
strikes) and Mustang (6-12)
starter Levi Creeger (2-4) set
down their respective sides in
order in the first, one thought
this was going to be a low-
scoring affair.
The Mustangs got their
only hit in the second: a lead-
off slow roller to second base
by Levi Hoy. He advanced
on a wild pitch and then a
1-out bouncer to second by
Jon Swaney but Kortokrax
caught the next batter looking
at strike three.
The Wildcats then unload-
ed in the second frame, amass-
ing seven runs on four hits
and four Mustangs miscues.
Curtis Miller (2-for-3) led off
with a double to deep center.

ficed both up a base; an error
offense; we put the ball in play
and move runners around.
Obviously, their mistakes in
the field helped us but that’s

things but it didn’t work. We
usually don’t do that but we
needed to do something. They
found some spots with Levi’s
(Creeger) pitching and we
thought someone else would
do better.”

Indians, counting up 83 pitch-
es in the process. He only
allowed four baserunners,
only one as far as second
base.
“Ryan gave us another
good outing from our starting
pitching. He kept the ball low
and mixed in the off-speed
pitches very well,” Metzger
continued. “Again, we were
solid in the field behind him,
coming up with a couple of
double plays out of our out-
field.”
The Jays scored once in
the first, four times in the
second five times in the fourth
(sending 11 batters to the dish
and highlighted by Pohlman’s
opposite-field home run to
right) and finished it off with
four more in the fifth.
Jordan Leininger went
2-for-4 with two runs scored
and four runs batted in, while
Edelbrock went 2-for-3 (2

“This is the second game
in a row we came out focused
and ready to play from the
start. Our bats have started to
come alive and we are show-
ing a lot of confidence at the
plate right now,” Metzger
added.

over the Milwaukee Brewers.
The Padres racked up a sea-
son-high 23 hits after coming in
hitting a majors-worst .219.
Chris Denorfia led off the
game with a homer and San
Diego built an early 5-0 lead
but Milwaukee rallied with Prince
Fielder’s 200th career homer and
Yuniesky Betancourt’s solo shot
to go ahead 6-5 until the eighth.
Jason Bartlett tied it with a sin-
gle and Maybin doubled down
the line with the bases loaded.
Ludwick followed with a two-run
shot that made it 11-6 and the
Padres kept rolling from there.
Chad Qualls (2-2) pitched 1
1/3 innings of relief, including
getting out of a bases-loaded jam
trailing 6-5 in the sixth to earn

PITTSBURGH — Hiroki
Kuroda allowed just three hits
over seven innings and the Los
Angeles Dodgers edged the
Pittsburgh Pirates.
Kuroda (4-3) struck out eight
and walked three as the Dodgers
won back-to-back games for the
first time in three weeks.
The Dodgers scored their first
run against Paul Maholm (1-5)
on a double-play grounder in the
sixth. Jerry Sands added an RBI
double for Los Angeles, which
hadn’t posted consecutive vic-
tories on the road since taking
two games from the San Diego
Padres in early April.
Matt Guerrier worked the
eighth and Vicente Padilla gave

CHICAGO — Matt Garza
got his first win at Wrigley Field
as the Chicago Cubs delivered
their biggest offensive output of
the season to beat the St. Louis
Cardinals.
Chicago scored six runs in
the third after a 53-minute rain
delay, added four more in the
fifth and finished with 17 hits, four
by Starlin Castro. The runs were
the most the Cubs had scored
this season and the hits tied a
season high.
The Cards dropped to 1-1
without manager Tony La Russa,
who missed his second straight
game as he recovers from
shingles. He’ll be absent for the
remainder of St. Louis’ 6-game
road swing that ends Sunday in
Cincinnati.

MIAMI — He scored the
game’s final 10 points. He
knelt on the court when it
was over. He even apolo-
gized afterward for any
feelings that may have
been hurt last summer
when he left Cleveland
for Miami.
For LeBron James,
the night was emotion-
al and unforgettable.
And imagine: The
Miami Heat are only
halfway through the
pursuit of an NBA
title.
Finally vanquish-
ing their rivals from Boston,
Dwyane Wade scored 34
points, James added 33 —
including a spectacular clos-
ing flourish — and the Heat
went on a 16-0 run over the
final 4:15 to beat the Celtics
97-87 on Wednesday and
win their Eastern Conference
semifinal series in five
games.
When it was over, James
took a knee, oblivious to the
photographers who quickly
surrounded him in Miami’s
celebration. By then, some of
the Celtics were already back
in the locker room, skipping
the customary end-of-series
handshakes. James didn’t
seem to notice.
“Everything went through
my mind at that point,”
James said. “Finally get-
ting over this hump against
this team. Everything I went
through this summer, with
‘The Decision’ and deciding
to come down here to be a
part of this team ... because
I knew how important team
is to this sport ... and all the
backlash I got from it.
“I’d be up here for two
hours if I tell you exactly
everything that went through
my head. Very emotional at
that point, you know, and
happy we got through it as
a team.”
That they did — as a
team.

that kickstarted the final push

Pierce scored 12 and Delonte
West added 10.
“Right now, I am really
upset,” Pierce said. “I wish
I could have played better
tonight. Unfortunately, we
came up on the short end of
the stick. I tip my hat off to
Miami. They really played
great basketball.”
Rajon Rondo finished
with six points in 31 minutes
for Boston, playing with what
appeared to be a slimmer
brace over the still-painful
left elbow that he dislocated
during Game 3.
“I know we gave a lot
in Game 3,” Celtics coach
Doc Rivers said. “And I don’t
know if we could ever get
that effort back.”
The Celtics got one mea-
sure of a victory Wednesday
night: Ending months of
speculation, Rivers said he
will likely return to coach
next season.
“I’m a Celtic,” Rivers
added. “And I love our
guys.”
So while he could start
thinking of the future, James
was trying to put away the
past.
Exactly one year earli-
er, James was maligned in
Cleveland when the Cavaliers
were embarrassed by the
son-high by allowing nine runs.
He gave up nine hits, walked a
season-high five and struck out
one.

Twenty-one Delphos FFA
members recently attend
the 83rd annual State FFA
Convention in Columbus.
During the two-day
trip, members participated
in Career Development
Events, listened to out-
standing motivational
speakers, and received rec-
ognition for their accom-
plishments.
The chapter was named
a gold medal chapter for its
Program of Activities. This
year, the chapter was named
a top ten chapter out of 307
FFA chapters across the
state.
The Farm Business
Management Team placed
9th out of 45 teams. The
team consisted of Chris
Pohlman, 11th overall indi-
vidual out of 340 partici-
pants; Tim Pohlman, Brock
Bonifas, Scott Pohlman, Kurt
Hoersten, Wes Roby and
Jordan Barclay.

FFA members earn Chapter Degrees

At the March FFA meeting, 14 members received their chapter degrees. To receive your chapter degree, members
have to meet the following requirements: must have your Greenhand degree, must have completed at least one semester
of instruction in agricultural education, have in operation an approved supervised agricultural experience program; and
be regularly enrolled in an agricultural education class. Have satisfactory knowledge of the local constitution and the
local program of activities, have earned $150 by the members own efforts, worked 50 hours in a supervised agricultural
experience other than class time; demonstrate 5 parliamentary procedure abilities, maintain a satisfactory scholastic
