“The most interesting aspects of texts written in different times is seeing the
differences in what people value”. This opinion is to some extent accurate in relation to
the Sonnets from the Portuguese, by Elizabeth Barrett Browning, and The Great Gatsby,
by F. Scott Fitzgerald. There is great evidence in the sonnets XIV (14) and XXII (22) and
the novel. The values of people within the 1800’s have changed in comparison with the
people in the 1920’s and so has the idea of love and how sacred love is.

Throughout the Sonnets from the Portuguese, by Elizabeth Barrett Browning, the
idea of love as a sacred thing was present throughout all the poems. In particular
Sonnet XIV shows that love is sacred and the persona is asking her lover to love her for
who she is, to truly love her because love is sacred. There is also proof within Sonnet
XXII. Sonnet XXII shows how love is sacred but it is also something that the persona
wish’s to be challenged so that she can see that it is true and not something superficial.
The values of the people within the 1800’s include things such as strong beliefs about
relationships and how they should be, such as who should be with whom based on class
and money, religion being prominent in social codes and expectations, marriage for
social status, which also shows the superficial conduct of the men should instigate the
relationship, not the other way around and the women should both dress and behave in
a conservative manner. Many of these values have changed between then and the
1920’s.

The 1920’s have been commonly known as the Jazz Age and the people within
the Jazz Age have very different values to the people in the 1800’s. The Great Gatsby,
by F. Scott Fitzgerald, shows a very different perspective of love as a cherished thing.
Throughout the novel, there are many indiscretions by character’s that do not value
love. The affairs between Daisy Buchanan and Jay Gatsby, and between Tom Buchanan
and Myrtle Wilson, show that both Tom and Daisy do not value love, and that love is
only superficial. The values of people within the 1920’s include having less strict rules
about relationships, which was evident in the affairs that are present, religious beliefs
declined, men and women both instigated relationships, and the dress code was much
less conservative. But there was still marriage’s for social status, which shows that even
though love was there, there was still a superficial manner to it.

The opinion “The most interesting aspect of texts written in different times is
seeing the differences in what people value” is supported by both the Sonnets from the
Portuguese, by Elizabeth Barrett Browning, and The Great Gatsby, by F. Scott Fitzgerald.
The value of love in particular is questioned throughout the texts. The time difference
changes the way people view love. Within the 1800’s, it was special and something that
was treasured. Robert Browning courted Elizabeth Barrett in the whirlwind of love, while
Daisy and Tom Buchanan only married for social status, which was evident in the fact
that they did not value the love of one another when they went and had affairs with
other people. The sonnets XIV and XXII support the idea of love being sacred and
special, while the affairs present in The Great Gatsby show that the people of the Jazz
Age considered love to be something more superficial.

In conclusion, the accuracy of the opinion “The most interesting aspects of texts
written in different times is seeing the differences in what people value”, is shown
through the texts, the Sonnets from the Portuguese, by Elizabeth Barrett Browning, and
The Great Gatsby, by F. Scott Fitzgerald. The value of love is viewed differently in both
time eras and is reflected through the sonnets and novel. The accuracy of the statement
is accurate to some extent while there can be some aspects that the statement would
make inaccurate.
