A Self Consistent Formulation for Citation

Abstract— A self-citation is a reference an author provide in a
document to other documents written by himself. Self-references
may result from the cumulative nature of individual research, the
need for personal gratification, or the value of self-citation as a
rhetorical and tactical tool in the struggle for visibility and
scientific authority. This paper provides a self consistent citation
analysis on a famous self-proclaimed youngest professor in the
history from Medan. The analysis reveals the author has a high
self citation, able to cite himself 10 to 40 times in a publication.
The activity of self citation is more than 50% of the number of
citations he received. This is consistent self citation.

I. INTRODUCTION
N elson Tansu is Associate Professor of Electrical &
Computer Engineering from Lehigh University claims
that he is a genius and the youngest professor in history.
Tansu claims that he has authored more than 220 papers
and his papers have more than 1100 citations. That means he is
very popular. But this investigation proves that he is just a
consistent self citation.
This research find consistent self citation in the field of
Physics and MOCVD of III-Nitride and III-V Semiconductor
Optoelectronics Materials and Devices; III-Nitride and III-V
Semiconductor Nanostructures for Solid State Lightings,
Energy, and Communications; Photonics.

II. SELF CONSISTENT ANALYSIS
A fully self-consistent formulation is described here for the
analysis and generation of self citation by Nelson Tansu [1].
We can use Scopus (http://www.scopus.com), a publication
database to investigate this. You can do this at a university
library.
Search for “Tansu, N” as author.
Now, Scopus only gives 148 papers (Not 220)
We can do a citation analysis.
Scopus gives a total number of citations = 1148, with h
index = 19
But look at the 1148 citations, how many citation is due to
Tansu himself. What is his self citation?
In Scopus select “Exclude from citations self citation of
authors”
The result of Scopus five: Total citations: 598, h index = 13
It means that from the 1148 citations, 550 citations come
from Tansu himself, almost half of the citation (48%) are self
citation.
Nelson Tansu has a 50% self citation.
Congratulation, Tansu is a Self-Consistent Self-Citation.

Notice publication after year 2006 (No. 85 in his list), Tansu
are all as last author. That means he just do nothing, and he
asked people to put his name on the paper. If he’s such a great
professor, his name will not be at the last of all the papers.
He claimed to have more than 220 papers, but only 148
papers are really counted as scientific papers by Scopus.
Here is another proof that Tansu is manipulating the citation
to get a high h-index.
The h-index is an index to measure both the productivity
and impact of the published work of a scientist or scholar. The
index is based on the set of the scientist's most cited papers
and the number of citations that they have received.
A scientist has index h if he has published h papers each of
which has been cited by others at least h times.
(Highlight by others, meaning you shouldn't cite yourself to
get a high h index)
You can manipulate the h-index if you keep citing your own
paper.
Remember the result from Scopus is h index = 19.

Nelson Tansu claimed to be a genius and youngest
professor, but it is all due to consistent self citation. As the

That is why this Tansu is a Self Consistent Self Citation
Professor.
The examples show that Tansu in total has 10-40 self
referencing in a publication. Each publication reference
himself up to 40 times. This is an excessive self referencing.
IV. CONCLUSION
Nelson Tansu is not the youngest professor in the history.
He just make up all this lies to the Indonesian people. he has a
high self citation.

Nelson Tansu (born in Medan, Sumatera Utara,

20th of October 1977; age 33 years old) is the world
self-proclaimed youngest professor in history. Nelson
Tansu. He is a self-proclaimed expert and genius in
nanotechnology and optoelectronic from Indonesia
who has become a tenure-tracked Assistant Professor
in the University of Lehigh when he was 25 years
old. Tansu has eliminated more than 300 doctors to
get the position since July 2003. He was the self-
proclaimed youngest professors appointed in a high profile university in
America. Since his surname “Tansu” sounds Japanese, Tansu claims that
many Japanese Consulates has tried to persuade him to return to Japan to
contribute to Japan’s economy. BUT, Prof. Tansu declared that he actually
holds a Green Passport with the image of Garuda Pancasila. Tansu’s
Doctorate dissertation received the award as “The 2003 Harold A. Peterson
Best ECE Research Paper Award” winning over 300 other Doctorate
dissertations. In total, he has received 11 scientific international awards and
has published over 200 articles in international journals and more than 1200
self citations. Currently he is a visiting professor in 18 higher education and
research institutions. He is also active and often invited as a speaker in many
international events in USA, Canada, Europe and Asia.
