Venue: Discovery Suites Venue: N Hotel
25 ADB Avenue, Ortigas Center, Pasig City Kauswagan Highway, Cagayan de Oro City

BACKGROUND

The Philippine microfinance sector is a highly competitive sector. Information is essential for
microfinance institutions (MFIs) in their decision-making process and the choice of their
strategic direction. Knowing certain information about their peers helps MFIs situate their
performance and introspect their internal processes. Information about MFIs is also beneficial
for clients, since clients select MFI products and services that appropriately address their
financial and non-financial needs.

The Microfinance Council of the Philippines, Inc. (MCPI) has developed an important partnership
with the Microfinance Information Exchange (MIX) in order to track MFI performance. The MIX
provides information on MFIs, public and private funds that invest in microfinance, MFI
networks, raters/external evaluators, advisory firms, and governmental and regulatory agencies.

In 2004, MCPI began collecting financial and operational information from MFIs. In 2009, MCPI
started collecting social performance information from participating MFIs. By reporting social
and financial performance, MFIs create a sense of community and shared commitment to
transparency in the delivery microfinance services. It also helps the microfinance sector, which is
now under scrutiny, to show to different key stakeholders as to where the industry is now in
terms of its overall performance – of whether, there is a balance between financial and social
performance, or not.

OBJECTIVES

The objectives of the workshop are the following:

 Help MFIs understand the different key indicators in both social and financial
performance reporting;
 Help MFIs use social and financial performance indicators in their decision-making
process in relation to their strategic direction and operational targets; and
 Facilitate the learning of MFIs in using the new MIX Market to generate customized
reports and help them situate their performance within the spectrum of peer institutions.

 Around 20 participants coming from 10 MFIs are expected to attend each workshop in
Pasig City and Cagayan de Oro City.
 Target participants are Executive Directors or Heads of MFIs, Board members, Finance
