HEBREWS

as seen through the eyes of

Isaac Goldstein

WEEK 2
Hebrews 5-13

INTRO
Last week we met Issac Goldstein, a young Hebrew man,
who spent most of his life as a devout Jew working in his
family's fish market.

We learned that but something had been nagging at his

heart and about six months ago, he became a Christian.

After becoming a Christian, several things really plagued

Issac in his newly found religious beliefs. He knew that
Jesus, was a Jew like him. What he had a hard time getting
straight was just how Jesus fit into the picture.

Most of the writings he read in the New Testament were

helpful. But many of them were written to Gentiles (or non-
Jews), who did not have the same Godly heritage he did.
Fortunately, as a result of his studies of the New Testament, he ran across the
book of Hebrews.

A few of the basics that he learned about the book are:

1. It's reportedly written by Paul, but we really don't
know who wrote it.
2. It was written about 20 – 30 years after the crucifixion
of Christ.

RECAP
In the first part of the book, we found a discussion with regard to Angels,
Moses and the High Priest and their place in the kingdom in relation to Christ.

So the writer dealt with religious icons that can so easily crowd out Jesus.

1
JESUS AS OUR HIGH PRIEST

The remainder of the book really ties up the whole idea of Jesus now being the
High Priest of the New Covenant.

Isaac read on:

Now the main point of what we are saying is this: We

do have such a high priest, who sat down at the right
hand of the throne of the Majesty in heaven, and who
serves in the sanctuary, the true tabernacle set up by
the Lord, not by a mere human being.
Hebrews 8:1-2

Isaac realized that Jesus was now his perfect, eternal high priest. He did not
have to jump through all the hoops and have all the barriers to God that his
ancestors did.

He also came into a greater realization that Jesus was the true and actual
fulfillment of God's prophesies that the Jews had been looking for for centuries.

Once again, the writer of Hebrews reflects back to the well known prophecy in
the Old Testament and writes:

… The days are coming, declares the Lord, when I will

make a new covenant with the people of Israel and
with the people of Judah.

It will not be like the covenant I made with their

ancestors when I took them by the hand to lead them
out of Egypt, because they did not remain faithful to my
covenant, and I turned away from them, declares the
Lord.
Hebrews 8:8-9

This scripture is a reflection back to Jeremiah 31.

2
The writer then moves to really put a fine point on Jesus' importance as High
Priest:
For this reason Christ is the mediator of a new
covenant, that those who are called may receive the
promised eternal inheritance—now that he has died as
a ransom to set them free from the sins committed
under the first covenant.
Hebrews 9:15

This fits perfectly with Jesus own words:

I am the way and the truth and the life. No one
comes to the Father except through me.
John 14:6

CONCLUSION
So, how to we apply what Isaac learned through his reading of the rest of the
book of Hebrews to our lives?

1. As unpopular as this idea is in our modern culture,

Jesus is the only way to Heaven.
a) Its not through solely the teachings of the Old
Testament and Judaism. We learn great history
and principals from that, but our salvation is in
Jesus.
b) Its not through any other means, prophet or religion.
c) Its not through religious icons like Angels, Moses or
any other thing or person that we see as exalted.

2. Jesus is truly the fulfillment of Old Testament

prophesies. He's the one the Jews were looking for.

PRAYER
• Forgive us of sins that separate us from YOU.
• Guide us in truly understanding how we make Christ
first in our lives.
• For anyone here who doesn't know you, move them to
choose you. We pray they will accept you.
