9. a) For a single queue, single service point system with passion arrivals and (06)
exponential service times, show how the average no. of people in the system
would vary, if an average of 12 people needed the service every hour and it
took alternative values of 24, 18 and 15 per hour. What is the probability
that a person coming in would have to be in queue?
b) In a busy textile shop in the city, the manager looks after 96 customers per (07)
24 hour day. For each customer he requires 10 minutes to show the different
varieties. For each customer it costs Rs. 100/- at an average of servicing the
customer at each minute of decreases in this average time would cost Rs. 10
per customer. How much would have to be budgeted to decrease the
average size of the queue as manager is the only person to give his service.
c) Consider a single server queuing system with Poisson input, exponential (07)
service times suppose the mean arrival rate is 3 calling units per hour, the
expected service time is 0.25 hour and the maximum permissible no. calling
units in the system is two. Derive the steady state probability distribution of
the number of calling units in the system and then calculate the expected
no. in the system.

10 a) At a one man barber shop, it takes on the average half an hour for a haircut (06)
and customers arrive at an average rate of one per every 45 minutes. If the
Passion exponential model is assumed, at any point in time, on the average
i) How many customers will there be in the shop?
ii) What time will a customer spend in the shop?
b) Arrivals at a telephone booth are considered to be Passion with an average (07)
time of 10 minutes between one arrival and the next. The length of a phone
call is assumed to be distributed exponential with 3 minutes.
i) -What is the probability that a person arriving at the booth will have to
wait?
ii) The telephone department will install a second booth when convinced
that an arrival would expect waiting for atleast 3 minutes for
phone. By how much should the flow of arrivals increase in order
to justify a second booth.
c) A local one person barber shop can accommodate a maximum of 5 people at (07)
a time (4 waiting and 1 getting haircut) customers arrive according to a
Passion distribution with mean 5 per hour. The barber cuts hair at an
average rate of 4 per hour (exponential service time).
a) What percentage of time is the barber idle?
b) What fraction of the potential customers are turned away.
c) What is the expected number of customers waiting for a haircut?
