FORTY HADITHS ON THE MERIT OF

SAYING LAILAHAILLALLAH

Allah the Almighty has said: "O son of

Adam, so long as you call upon Me
and ask of Me, I shall forgive you for
what you have done, and I shall not
mind. O son of Adam, were your sins
to reach the clouds of the sky and
were you then to ask forgiveness of
Me, I would forgive you. O son of
Adam, were you to come to Me with
sins nearly as great as the earth and
were you then to face Me, ascribing no
partner to Me, I would bring you
forgiveness nearly as great as it."

ABU BAKR (r.a), THE

FIRST CALIPH (632 -
634 C.E.) FIRST
ADDRESS
After giving praise and thanks to Allah
(The One True God), Abu Bakr (ra)
addressed the Muslims gathered at the
Prophet’s mosque:

"I have been given the authority

over you, and I am not the best of
you. If I do well, help me; and if I do
wrong, set me right. Sincere regard
for truth is loyalty and disregard for
truth is treachery. The weak
amongst you shall be strong with
me until I have secured his rights, if
God will; and the strong amongst

you shall be weak with me until I

have wrested from him the rights of
others, if God will. Obey me so long
as I obey God and His Messenger
(Muhammad, pbuh). But if I disobey
God and His Messenger, ye owe me
no obedience. Arise for your prayer,
God have mercy upon you."

Umar ibn al-Khattāb(r.a)

(634-644 C.E)
GoldenAge of Islam
After receiving the surrender of
Jerusalem and completing the
tour of Syria when Caliph Umar
was returning to Madina he led
the prayer at Jabiah. On this
occasion he delivered an address
which is preserved in history. The
major part of his address was:

"O ye people I counsel you to

read the Qur’an. Try to
understand it and ponder over
it. Imbibe the teachings of the
Qur’an. Then practise what the
Quran teaches. The Qur’an is
not theoretical; it is a practical
code of life. The Qur’an does
not bring you the message of
the Hereafter only; it is
primarily intended to guide
you in this life. Mold your life
in accordance with the
teachings of Islam for that is
the way of your well being. By
following any other way you
will be inviting destruction.

"Fear Allah (The One True

God), and whatever you want
seek from Him. All men are
equal. Do not flatter those in
authority. Do not seek favors
from others. By such acts you
demean yourself. And
remember that you will get
only that is ordained for you,
and no one can give you
anything against the will of
God. Then why seek things
from others over which they
have no control? Only
supplicate God for He alone is
the sovereign.

"And speak the truth. Do not

hesitate to say what you
consider to be the truth. Say
what you feel. Let your
conscience be your guide. Let
your intentions be good, for
verily God is aware of your
intentions. In your deeds your
intentions count. Fear God,
and fear no one else. Why fear
others when you know that
whatever sustenance ordained

for you by God you will get

under all circumstances? And
again why fear when you know
that death is ordained by God
alone and will come only when
He wills?

"Allah has for the time being

made me your ruler. But I am
one of you. No special
privileges belong to ruler. I
have some responsibilities to
discharge, and in this I seek
your cooperation. Government
is a sacred trust, and it is my
endeavor not to betray the
trust in any way. For the
fulfillment of the trust I have
to be a watch-man. I have to
be strict. I have to enforce
discipline. I have to run the
administration not on the basis
of personal idiosyncracies; I
have to run it in public interest
and for promoting the public
good. For this we have the
guidance in the Book of God.
Whatever orders I issue in the
course of day to day
administration have to
conform to the Qur’an. God has
favored us with Islam. He sent
to us His Messenger
(Muhammad, pbuh). He has
chosen us for a mission. Let us
fulfill that mission. That
mission is the promotion of
Islam. In Islam lies our safety;
if we err we are doomed."

Hadrat Umar (RaziAllah Anho) always appreciated

his(Hadrat Khalid RaziAllah anho) services. But there

were certain complaints against him, especially for being

extravagant, when he awarded 10,000 dinars to a poet.

Hadrat Khalid could not give satisfactory explanation to

Hadrat Umar (Raziallah Anho) hence he was removed

from the command. But Hadrat Khalid proved to be a

very true Muslim and fought like an ordinary soldier in

the army. As narrated above, he was deposed when the
battle of Yarmuk was going on. The Caliph’s order was

delivered to Khalid but it had no effect on him. He went

on fighting as fiercely as before. After the battle was
over, his dismissal became known. When somebody

asked him why the news did not damp his spirit at all,
he said, "I was fighting for the cause of Allah."

Regarding the removal of Hadrat Khalid some of the

Muslim historians say: "He (Hadrat Umar) had deposed

Khalid from the government, not because of tyranny or
fraud, but because he deemed it essential to admonish

the people, who were inclined to put their trust in an

arm of flesh, instead of looking to the Giver of all
victory"

He entered Jerusalem holding the rope of the camel on

which was riding his slave. His clothes were dirty and

there were several patches on them. Hadrat Abu

'Ubaidah, Khalid bin Walid and other commanders came
some distance to receive him. They were wearing costly

garments. This made Hadrat Umar (RaziAllah Anho)

angry. He threw some pebbles at his generals (to show

his anger) and said, "Have you changed so much in

just two years? The only way for the success is

the way of the Holy Prophet (Sal Allaho Alehe

Wassallam)."

In the year 17-18 A.H., Hijaz (Northern Arabia)

and Syria were faced by a severe famine and

drought. Hadrat Umar (Raziallah Anho) took steps to
get food supplies from Egypt, part of which had been

conquered by Hadrat'Amr bin al-'As (Raziallah Anho).

He sent three big ships of grains to Medina which were
unloaded in the presence of Hadrat Umar (Raziallah

Anho). He himself distributed the grains among the

needy. Hadrat Umar (Raziallah Anho) did not take any
delicacy (butter etc.) during the famine period. When he

was requested to take care of his health he said, "If I

don't taste suffering, how can I know the

sufferings of others? "

When the famine became intolerable he prayed to Allah

in a big gathering of Muslims. It has been narrated that
the prayers had not even finished when rains started to

pour down.

Usman Ibn Affan(r.a)

(644-656C.E)
The 3rd Caliph of Islam, He was
known as the name of “Usman Ibn
Affan”. When he grew up, he started
business in cloth which made him very
rich. He used his money in good ways
and always helped the poor. He
accepted Islam when Hazrat Abu Bakr
(R.A) preached to him.

During the Khilafah of Hazrat Usman

ibn Affan (May Allah be pleased with
him), a rebellion movement was
established by a group of people who
became responsible for dividing the
Companions of Prophet Muhammad
(peace be upon him).They created
miunderstandings among the
companions of Prophet Muhammad
(peace be upon him). These
misunderstandings created wars
among the companions (Sahabah).
The Khawarij martyred Hazrat
Usman(r.a), the 3rd Caliph of Islam.
They martyred the 4th Caliph of Islam,
Hazrat Imam Ali(r.a), the cousin and
son-in-law of Prophet Muhammad
(peace be upon him).The Khawarij
killed hundreds of companions and the
family members of Prophet
Muhammad (peace be upon him).

Ali ibn Abi Talib(r.a)

(656-661C.E) Lion of
Allah
Hadrat Ali found the caliphate to be a
bed of thorns. During those five years,
he fought three battles: (i) the Battle of
the Camel, (ii) the Battle of Siffin, and
(iii) the Battle of Nahrawan. All three

battles were fought against the

Muslims and led to considerable
bloodshed. It was a matter of the great
shock for him, that instead of fighting
against non-Muslims, he had to fight
against Muslims. During this period,
Hadrat Ali had to suffer from frustration
because of repeated and continuous
betrayals, even by men close to him.

When 'Alee turned his army away from

the plain of Siffeen and entered Kufah,
about twelve thousand of his followers
did not enter the city with him. Instead,
they camped at the town of Harooraa
and raised their voices in unison
reciting the slogan, 'Judgement
belongs only to Allaah!' This incident
marks the first appearance of the
Khawaarij as a sectarian movement.
They subsequently appointed Shuaib
ibn Rib'ee at-Tameemee as their
Ameer for battle, and 'AbduLlaah ibn
al-Kawwaa al-Yashkaree as their
Ameer for Salaah. These Khawaarij
were initially very pious and
meticulous about the performance of
the various acts of worship. However,
their belief that they were more
knowledgeable than the Prophet's
companion.

they replied, 'Welcome Ibn 'Abbaas,

what has brought you here?' I replied,
"I have come from the Muhaajirs, the
Ansaars, and the Prophet's son-in-law
among whom the Qur'aan was
revealed. They know its interpretation
better than you do."

Khawaariji's three points which they

had against 'Alee. When I asked them
what they were, they said: "One was
that 'Alee made men judges in Allaah's
affair even though Allaah, Most Great
and Glorious, has said, 'Judgement
belongs only to Allaah. So what value
are men and their decisions after
Allaah's statement?" I said, "That is
one point and what else?" They
replied, "As for the second point, it is
that he fought and killed his enemies,
yet did not take any captives nor spoils
of war. If it was because the enemy
were believers, why was it permissible
for us to fight and kill them and not
make them captives?" I said, "What is
the third point?" They replied, "He
erased the title Ameer al-Mu mineen
(Leader of the Believers) from himself."
If he is not Ameer al-Mumineen then
surely he must be Ameer al-Kaafireen
(Leader of the disbelievers).

When Ali bin Talib heard what Al-

Khawarij did to Abdullah bin Khabbab
and his family, he led an expedition of
4000 soldiers to arrest those who
committed this atrocity. When he
reached their area, he asked them to

deliver those who killed Abdullah. They

said to Ali’s emissary, “We all killed
him. And, furthermore, if we catch you
(meaning Ali) we will kill you too.”
Then, Ali prepared to fight them. The
battle between Ali(r.a) and Al-Khawarij
commenced, and Ali’s army defeated
and killed them all except 9 people.

The Sayings of Hadrat Ali (r.a)

You will be with those

Whom you love
A man asked the Prophet about the
Hour (i.e. Day of Judgment) saying,
"When will the Hour be?" The Prophet
said, "What have you prepared for it?"
The man said, "Nothing, except that I
love Allah and His Apostle." The
Prophet said, "You will be with those
whom you love." We had never been
so glad as we were on hearing that
saying of the Prophet (i.e., "You will be
with those whom you love.") Therefore,
I love the Prophet, Abu Bakr and
'Umar, and I hope that I will be with
them because of my love for them
though my deeds are not similar to
theirs.

(Narrated by Anas - al-Buhkhari 5.37)

[src: alim.org]

Love of Prophet Muhammad

(Sallallahualehiwasallam)
A man said to the Prophet (peace be
upon him): By Allah, O Messenger of
Allah, I do love you. The Prophet
(peace be upon him) said: Look, what
you are saying? The man said: By
Allah, I love you, and repeated this
sentence thrice. The Prophet (peace
be upon him) said: If you really love
me, then be prepared for acute
poverty, for extreme hardship rushes
more rapidly towards a person who
loves me, than a flood flows towards
its goal. "

Tirmidhi) [src: alim.org]
