M. Phil. Dissertation: “Studies of some natural ion chelators”

Summary:
This thesis describes a study of the natural iron chelators in comparison with synthetic
one based on its chelation efficiency. The investigation is introduced by examining the
iron, its importance, and need of chelation. It explains the need of quantification of
iron, need of iron chelation and ability of iron to sequester iron. Chelators of various
types are summarized from the literature with methods to determine complexed metal.
The advantages and disadvantages of various laboratory techniques employed for the
iron determinations have been assessed and subsequently used to quantify the ability of
chelators to chelate iron. Different approaches to determine the free and chelated
amount of Fe (III) were evaluated. Among the methods investigated
spectrophotometric, conductivitimetric, gravimetric, titrimetric, voltammetric and
stability constant determination were used.
