Regaining Focus
T he other day, I got a pretty
bad haircut. An unfortunate
thing about traveling so
often is that it’s rare to get a
consistent haircut while on the
road. (Bear with me. There’s
a purpose to this.) If there’s
one thing I’ve learned while
being on deputation, it’s that at
anytime, anything can change.
There are so many variables
to traveling and being in new
places each week.
While driving from the
barber to see Sarah, I made
several long glances into the
rearview mirror of the car. I
couldn’t help but smile and
laugh. I looked like I just got
out of boot camp. I thought to
myself, “I might as well get used
to this. It probably won’t be the
last time this happens.”
When I met up with Sarah,
she looked at me somewhat
puzzled, and said, “Wow,
you’ve never had it cut like that
before.” I was impressed with
her diplomatic response.
I have recently been reading
through the Psalms and
meditating on many of the
marvelous truths to be found
in those passages. There are so
many emotions that permeate
the pages penned by David.
When considering his life, I
couldn’t help but notice the
chaos and uncertainty which
surrounded him. Yet in spite

of his unique circumstances,
he always was comforted and
reassured by the mercy and
faithfulness of God.
He would say things like,
“Thy mercy, O Lord, is in the
heavens; and thy faithfulness
reacheth unto the clouds” (Psalm
36:5). “I will sing of the mercies of
the Lord for ever: with my mouth
will I make known thy faithfulness
to all generations” (Psalm 89:1).
“O Lord God of hosts, who is a
strong Lord like unto thee? or
to thy faithfulness round about
thee?” (Psalm 89:8)
While driving back from the
haircut fiasco, these thoughts
came to mind. I began to
consider the faithfulness of
God. In a bizarre way, the Lord
used this situation to cause
me to recognize the fact that,
though circumstances are
uncertain and life is full of
variables, my God and Saviour
is unchanging, and He can be
nothing but faithful.
Time and time again,
through our travels and
transitions, He has faithfully
proven this to be absolutely
true!
Charles Spurgeon once
said, “If we are inclined to grieve
because everything around
us changes, our consolation
will be found in turning to our
unchanging God.”

40%. We have been able to
attend amazing local churches,
which are blessed with great
pastors with wonderful
families. We’ve met the most
loving people, who have
gone above and beyond to
demonstrate the love of Christ Pastor Mike Weiss & Stephen
to us. Scores of people and
churches have communicated
to us that they are praying
for us on a regular basis, and I
truly believe that many of the
blessing we experience are due
to the prayers of these people.
The Lord is truly faithful and
merciful.

Someone once said, “He who
notices God’s mercy will never be
without a mercy to notice.” May
we never cease noticing His
mercies. If you do, it may take a
bad haircut to help you regain
focus.
