2010/2011 School Year

Martin Luther High School Class Design

Job Description:

Serve as advanced media class instructor for up to 4 independent study students. After applying to take the
Gemini instructor will interview both the student and the parent. Class will be held at Gemini Studios after
normal school hours and on weekends.

Students will be expected to participate in Gemini Studio productions and video capture of school fine arts and
sporting events. Advanced media students involved in extra curricular activities, will be asked to participate in
video capture when available. If they cannot assist with the video capture they will be expected to work on pre
and post production editing of those events.

Class will be held at Gemini Studios. Gemini Studios will provide studio cameras, computers and post
production software necessary for class assignments at no cost to the student or school district and will be
responsible for all repairs and upgrades needed. FHS will provide 3 Canon GL-2 cameras for student field
usage.

Students will be trained and responsible to record school board meetings at city hall, dub it to DVD and
download it to the internet. They will also create a TV ready DVD recording to be televised on channel 13 at
city hall.

Student Responsibilities:

1. Students are to conduct themselves in a professional manner: dress code and communication skills.
2. Students will work closely with the public, coaches and other students.
3. If students are involved with extra curricular activities, they will be expected to work on pre-events to
be edited into video project.
4. Student must master teamwork and adherence to deadlines.
5. Students must master scheduling.
6. Students will video tape school and community activities at the Sr/Jr High School Gym, PAC and
athletic fields as well as events such as Budd School, the Hockey Arena etc.
7. Students will learn technical skills such as:
a. Web streaming video, video camera operation, computer editing, play-by-play announcing,
lighting, green screen techniques, sound engineering, trouble shooting, graphic arts, television
broadcast engineering, and set design.
8. Minimum 5 hours/week – 5 (NOTE-Past students averaged 15 hours/week.)
9. Student will receive 1 credit per semester.

This class will not be an introduction to media but rather an advanced third year college level media/
communications course.
As in the past, all students that have taken the independent study class at Gemini must maintain appropriate
grades in the other classes and must maintain a positive image in the community. Students who do not
maintain these standards will be asked to discuss the issue with their parents and instructor present. A decision
will be made following this discussion regarding the student’s continued enrollment in the media course. If the
student is removed from the media program, he/she will receive a failing grade. (Note-This has never
happened, however students in this course are taking it as a real world experience and in the real world a
worker must maintain standards or risk being fired.)

Gemini works closely with all the independent students inside and outside the classroom. Students will also
have the opportunity to work with college students at Bethany College in Mankato, Fox North live
productions, and the Minnesota Viking summer training camp events. Gemini’s goal is not to instruct media
students, but to teach students the life skills they need to succeed.
